The tkvlark and the nightingale,
Though small and light of wing.
Yet warble sweeter in the gro
Than all the birds that sing.
And so ft little woman.
Though a very little thing.
Is sweeter far than sugar.
And flowers that bloom in spring.
Juan de Ruiz de Hita.
Twenty-four times more men
than women die from heart at
tacks. Many more men than
women have stomach ulcers and
nervous breakdowns. Why? Ex
perts on the subject say it is be
cause women do not try to hide
their feelings as men do. When
they feel badly, they cry. When
they are angry or frightened
scream. When the longshot they
have two bucks on comes into
the stretch in front they yell.
And how! In short, the women
release their emotions. Men try
to keep everything under con
trol. Keep this in mind,' mister.
Change your policy. When you
are excited cut loose, scream,
yell and whatnot. When you
blow a three horse parlay don't
just sulk and brood. Go into a
corner somewhere or -to your
room and have a good cry.
Hearty Breakfast
It is not only on the morning
of the execution that condemned
men in California are given a
chance to eat a Jiearty break
fast. Such breakfasts are offered
daily for the men in the death
house. There is regularly issued
a menu bearing the title: "State
of California Weekly Menu for
Condemned Men." This includes
all three daily meals. A sample
breakfast follows: "Half grape
fruit, cornmeal mush, scrambled
eggs, sausage, fried potatoes,
cream gravy, biscuits, toast, cof
fee, milk tea."

the DeKoven operetta "Robin
Hood," isn't it? How about ale?
Do you like it? I recall when in
college I used to consume some
fine ale made in Charlestown,
Mass .Was called "Charlestown
Musty." Ale is very popular
with Englishwomen. Especially
the stage beauties. However,
they don't drink it. They use it
for a hair rinse. So, next time
you buy ale get a bottle for
yourself to drink and one for
your matrimonial mate to try
on her hair.
Asking
Queries from clients. Q. You
say Rockne never made the All-
America football team. My
brother-in-law, a Notre Dame
alumnus, says Rockne made it
1913. How about this? A.
Rockne was named for Walter
Camp's Ail-American third team
in 1913. That is. not as a regu
lar, just a substitute. First, No
tre Dame man to make an Ail-
American first team was George
Gipp . . . Q. Would you say
Texas is a Western State or a
Southern State? A. Historically
speaking, Texas is a Southern
State and fought with the Con
federacy in the War between the
States.
Hollywood Kiss
Note a "Hollywood kiss"
described as "lasting 15 sec
onds." No details were fur
nished as to the intensity of the
osculation. Nor was it men
tioned what type of embrace ac
companied same. However, 15
seconds is longer than you
think. To get an idea, give your
wive a kiss that long.
First Meeting
Where and when did you first
meet the girl who became your
wife? Astrologers claim the first
meeting has some bearing on the
married life of a couple. The
stargazers say it is good to have
first met at a theater, a dance,
restaurant or at the girl's
home. A race track is not so
good. That means a life of many
changes. A hospital is bad.
Means a life of many difficul
ties. Best time for a first meeting
with a future bride, according to
the astrologer, is somewhere
outdoors when there is a rain
bow In the sky. '

Around Hollywood
Editor's note: A:line Mosby is on
vacation. Guest columnist Betty
Grahle explains what has limited her
movie career recently her family.
By BETTY GRABLE
Written for the United Press
Hollywood (U.R) I'm very,
very unpopular with a number
of producers right now.
I've turned down their pic
ture offers. Not that I didn't
like the script, the directors or
the money they offered me. I
just refuse to leave home, and
most of the offers have been
for pictures to be done on lo
cation. It may sound corny, but my
husband, Harry James, is the
breadwinner in our family ,and
I'm the wife Harry leaves be
hind when he has to take his
band on tour, and I'm the mother
of his two daughters, Vicki and
Jessie James.
Close To Children
I just don't believe in turning
my kids over to strangers to
take care of. I clon't happen to
believe in taking them out of
school at the drop of a contract,
in-the middle of a term and
transporting them here and
there.
When they're a little older,
traveling may be a great thing
for them, they'll be old enough
to appreciate it. Right now I
think the security of being in
the same school, with their own
friends, of being at home with
tneir parents, is tne most im
portant thing I can do for their
future and Harry agees with
me. . ,
Have Fun Togelhe
They're wonderful kids, hap
py and healthy, good, intelligent,
undemanding and unspoiled. We
have fun together. When we go
shopping they pick out their own
clothes, and they have good
taste. We're real pals, and I want
our relationship to stay that way.
I don't think it could if I were
USED

That's for

We've never spent even a va
cation apart and we never will
until they're grown up and want
to. We all go to Del Mar every
summer because' they love the
beach there and Harry and I en
joy the races, so the whole fam
ily has a good time.
People wonder why I've made
only two pictures the last two
years, "lhree ior ine fanow
at Columbia and "How to be
Very, Very Popular" at 20th
Century Fox.
Won't Leave Kids
The answer is " I wouldn't
leave them, long enough to do
even a two-week stint at Las
Vegas. I did some TV shows
here instead, because I could
still have dinner with my kids,
play with them.
Maybe I'm just getting lazy.
But really, my children's happi
ness and mine and Harry's mean
more to me than my career. Sure
I'd enjoy going abroad I've
never been. But I'll never go
until Harry and the kids can go
.wttlj me. In other words, I'm a
happily married woman, not just
a career woman.

Capitol Mall Area
Purchase Arranged
Salem (U.R) An offer of
$81,750 by the state for purchase
of the Glendora apartments in
the Capital Mall area has been
accepted by Mrs. Delia Hayden,
according to E. J. Ireland, sec
retary of the State Board of
Control.
Ireland said the deal probably
would be closed July 1.
Negotiations between the state
and Mrs. Hayden have been
pending for several years. A
year ago last January Mrs.
Hayden declined an offer of
about 580,000; saying appraisers
had set a value of more than
S100.000 on the property which
contains 16 apartments.
Ireland said six proposals had
been received for sale of sites
for the new mental hospital to
be built in the Portland area.
