funny only at the expense of
others. They joke about the silly
things their wives do. They poke
fun at relatives, especially in
laws, and they make, their ac
quaintances and friends appear
ridiculous when some of their
doings are embroidered to make
a good story out of them.
While everyone' likes to laugh,
few like to laugh at a person
who is the innocent victim of
such jokes. It's poor sportsman
ship. Then, too, the people who
hear the jokes about- others
often wonder if they are joked
about behind their backs. This
causes them to feel resentful to
ward the person who is telling
the stories and to wonder
whether the stories are so fun
ny after all.
Can Be Carried Too Far
It is always safe to joke about
one's self because It does not
tread on other people's toes.
However, even such joking can
be carried too far. When a per
son tells others about the
"stupid" things he did or said,
the question immediately comes
into their minds as to whether
he is a stupid person.
The more the story is exag
gerated to get a laugh ' from
others, the more likely the
hearers are to wonder just how
bright the teller of the story
really is. In this, as in all other
forms of jokes, one must exer
cise caution to avoid creating
unfavorable impressions.
LETTERS FROM READERS
"Is sarcasm a form of jeal
ousy? I have always suspected
that it was."
(A) Sarcasm often does come
from feelings of jealousy, though
this is not always the case.
Sometimes it comes from feel
ings of inadequacy on the part
of the person who uses it and
sometimes it is motivated by
dn8 ana resemment. wnen
fhilidren ar ieal, they, usual-
ly try to hurt the person who
makes them jealous by hitting
or kicking. The older person
uses more subtle forms of ex
pressing his jealousy and one
very common form is sarcasm.
By saying sarcastic hings to the
person he is jealous of, the per
son is inflicting mental rather
than physical pain.
Drinking: "I am 16 years old
and have a problem. Some of
the boys I date like to drink and.
if I refuse to drink with them.
they think I am a poor sport.
Should I drink even if my par
ents disapprove?"
(A) Certainly you should not
drink with boys on dates at your
age, and not at any time if your
parents disapprove. If the boys
who think you are a poor sport
because you will not drink with
them do not like you as you are,
let them ask other girls out. I am
sure you wili be able to find
plenty of boys to date who do
not think you are a poor sport
because you do not drink.
Nervousness: "My husband
seems to be getting more and
more nervous. Does this come
from poor health or worrying or
what?"
(A) Nervousness usually starts
with work and this affects the
person's health. Then, poor
health makes him worry more
and this, in turn, affects his
health more. In time a vicious
circle is set in motion which is
hard to stop. I suggest that your
husband see a doctor and have
the doctor prescribe a sedative
which will help him to relax. See
if this does not help him to slow
down the vicious circle he has
set into motion.

Fiery Female

Paid in Full
How much is your life insured
for? Don't tell me. It is none
of my business. Anyway, most
companies pay "off a life insur
ance policy in full when a man
reaches 96. As far as I know,
the record for collecting in full
on a life insurance policy while
still living is held by John D.
Rockefeller. When John D.
reached 96 he received the face
value of his life insurance pol
icies which amounted to $5,000,

Barbers
What does your barber know
about the history of his trade?
Does he know that at first bar

just shaved? Does he know the
name of the first man who had
a shave every day? If not, the
following excerpt from the works
of the Roman author, Pliny, the
Elder, may interest him. "The
first barbers who entered Italy
came out of Sicily 454 years
after the foundation of Rome.
They shaved but did not cut
hair. The first man to be shaved
every day was Scipio Africanus."

July 1 is Deadline
For Wheat Acreage
AllotmentCompliance
Jackson county wheat growers
have until July 1 to comply with
their 1955 wheat acreage allot
ment, according to Albert Straus,
chairman of the County Agricul
tural Stabilization and Conserva
tion committee.
By that time, growers must
dispose of excess wheat by cut
ting it for hay, or plowing it
under for green manure, so that
it can not be harvested for grain.
If this is not done, the wheat
will be subject to a marketing
quota penalty of $1.13 per
bushel. However, any grower
may harvest up to 15 acres with
out penalty, regardless of his al
lotment.
Being Measured
Measurements of wheat acre
ages in Jackson county are "now
being conducted, and any grow
er who has not been contacted
should notify the county ASC
office in the courthouse, Straus
said. Notices of measured acre
ages are being' sent to growers,
and those with excess acreage
are being notified as to how they
may dispose of the excess.
The restriction against par
ticipating in the agricultural con
servation program for farmers
harvesting in excess of their
Wheat allotment, even though
horvested acreage was under the
15 acre limitation, recently has
been lifted, Straus said.
