In a piece about vitamin A the
other day I said:
"In my opinion an optimal
daily ration of vitamin D"
(not A) "the year around pre
vents hypertrophy (enlarge
ment of lymphoid tissue (ton
sils) adenoids, lymph nodes or
"glands" in the neck."
I base the opinion mainly on
the fact that doctors formerly
prescribed cod liver oil for "scro
fula," which, I believe, was us-
usually what doctors today call
enlarged tonsils, adenoids and
lymph nodes in the neck.
Cod liver oil is probably the
richest natural source of vita
min A. It is also one of the rich
est sources of sunshine vitamin
D. And, just to keep the matter
complicated, so you may not be
come too self-confident, I beg to
remind you that cod liver oil is
an excellent source of iodine.
Incidentally, I cannot recollect
having received any cod liver oil
when I was a boy on Chapel
Street in Canandaigua. There
was no scrofula or consumption
in our family you see although
we were the poorest people in
western New York (I haven't
been able to survey the eco
nomic status of people south of

Pinning" Doesn't
Mean Engagement
"Pinning ' is a teenage custom
that is coming to be regarded
in much the same light as giv
ing an engagement ring.
(Q) I am a senior in high
school and will graduate tnis
June. My parents exnect me
to get a joo but I would like
to fie married. I have been
going with the same boy for
the past two years, and at
Christmas this year he gave
me his pin. Of course all my
classmates know I am pinned
and they keep asking me
when I am getting my en
gagement ring and when I
plan to be married. The boy .
who pinned me is in my class
at school but he expects to
go into the army when he
graduates and then go to col
lege when he finishes his mili
tary service. He has never
said anything about being en
gaged nor has he mentioned
marriage except in a casual
way. I thought that pinning a
girl was the same as being
engaged. What should I do
about this matter?"
(A) You shouldn't take the
pinning so seriously. Obviously
the boy has no thoughts ot mar-

present time.

not feel that
this is the time

is true that many boys and girls
marry after being pinned, it does
not always mean that they will.
This is true also of an engage
ment ring. Some girls break an
engagement and return the ring
even as late as a few days before
their wedding.
When a boy pins a girl, it
means that he is very fond of
her and wants to go steady with
her. It means that he is not yet
ready to be formally engaged.
Pinning has been described as
"being engaged to be engaged."
So long as you like this boy
and he likes you, wear his pin
and consider him your best
friend. When he goes into the
service and is away from home,
you would be very foolish to
give up all parties and dates
and sit at home alone.
You are not engaged to this
boy and he has not asked you
to be engaged to him. There
fore, you are free to go with
other boys while he is away
just as he should feel free to
go to parties and meet other
girls while he is in the service
and at college. If a time comes
when he asks you to marry
him, then you will want to de
vote your entire time to him.

nutrition is the best protection
against enlarged tonsils, ade
noids, neck "glands" (kernels)

scrofula,) pulmonary tubercu
losis (which people called "con
sumption" when I was a boy)
and a long list of other com
plaints or disabilities, which, I'm
afraid, you credulous customers
and your versatile doctors will
never learn, until too late, can
be cured or even much relieved,
not by old reliable or modern
miracle medicines, but by good
nutrition.
From where I sit, here behind
a mountain of mail from readers
of such fragments of my little
lessons as actually appear in
print, it is painfully evident that
most Americans do not compre
hend what good nutrition means.
American children, even chil
dren of high school and college
graduates, almost inevitably pre
sent signs andor symptoms of
malnutrition by the time they
reach the teens.
Teaching hygiene, which, as
you should know, is the science
of preserving health, is becoming
more difficult day by day. On
frequent occasions I ask the
Father whether I ought to carry
on despite the ever-increasing
restrictions and so far I have
followed as faithfully as I can
the injunction of Hippocrates.
Nineteenth-century doctors
prescribed cod liver oil in an
empirical way that is, they had
learned from experience that it
was good for certain ailments.
Doctors today know that vi
tamin A, vitamin D, and iodine
are the elements that account for
the prophylactic or remedial ef
fects of cod liver oil.
And so I urge every reader of
this piece who believes his or
her health functional efficiency,
vite or longevity could be im
proved, to send me a stamped,
self-addressed envelope and ask
for the pamphlet Young Folks
and Old Folks.

reported stricken with polio yes
terday, less than a week before
she was to have received an in
oculation with Salg vaccine.
The Clackamas county health

family had received anti-polio
shots. The child was hospitalized
in Portland where hospital at
tendants said she was suffering
partial paralysis in both legs.

Rio Grande valley farms Wednes
day and seized 57 braceros it
said were getting cheated. Bra
ceros are legal Mexican labor
ers. Water Sahli, district immigra
tion service director, said the
braceros were being forced to
work for less than the wages
their contracts called for. The
minimum is 50 cents an hour.
He said three of the five
farmers later signed, pledges
they would live up to their con
tracts in the future. He said the
