cial district five circuit judges.
Under terms of the act, which
carries the emergency clause,
the governor will appoint a
judge to serve until one is
elected at the November, 1956,
general election, and takes office
on the first Monday of January,
1957.
A new definition of true cash
value in reaching property tax
assessments became part of Ore
gon's law today when Gov. Pat
terson put his signature to a bill
passed after hot debate in the
1955 Oregon legislature.
True cash value of property
would be determined on the
basis of current conditions. The
definition was the result of years
of study by interim tax study
committees.
Firemen Inspect 143
Residences in City
City firemen inspected 143
residences Wednesday and made
64 recommendations for correc
tion of possible fire hazards.
No hazards were found at 73
homes. Twelve occupants turn
ed down the offer of inspection.
Firemen made 261 stops and
found no one home at 106 resi
dences. Two orders for correction of
hazardous conditions were is
sued yesterday by City Fire Mar
shal Truman Nelson. He inspect
ed six business occupancies and
pne apartment house.

Accordion Band
Plays in Victoria
Eve Prentice's accordion band
of Medford participated in
Queen Victoria Day celebrations
in Victoria, B.C., Sunday and
Monday, including a concert
and parade.
The concert, held in Victoria's
open-air band shell, was Sunday
afternoon, with an attendance of
several thousand. Folowing the
concert, members of the band
were served a picnic dinner.
Sunday night, the band played
at. services of the United Church
of Canada. Members of the
church served refreshments for
the band and six mothers who
accompanied the group.
The annual Queen Victoria
Day parade, in which the band
marched, was held Monday.
That afternoon, the group tour
ed Butchart Gardens in Victoria.
Arrangements for the trip
were made by George Willis in
Victoria, and transportation was
furnished by Trailways Bus
company.
Coffee Men To Talk
Price Stabilization
New Yorok (U.R) Latin
American coffee experts meet
here this week end to devise a
plan for stabilizing the price of
coffee, now selling in U. S. re
tail stores at the lowest levels
in five years-.
Some 16 Latin American na
tions, which produce 80 per cent
of the world's green coffee, will
send delegates. The meetings,
conducted in Spanish and Por
tugese, will be closed to the
press.
Sessions are expected to start
Saturday and end probably next
Tuesday.
A stockpile plan for Latin
American coffee may be devised
at the conference, according to
industry circles.
Through such a program, cof
fee sources said the green coffee
countries would "withdraw a
certain amount of excess pro
duction after normal demands
are met."

Boat Owners Having Tough Time Finding
Place To Park Their Floating Hobbies
New York (U.R) It's pretty
tough having a yacht these days.
You just can't find a place to
park. There are boats all over.
About one boat for every 30
people, according to the National
Association of Engine and Boat
Manufacturers, and this holiday
week end will see the opening of
what looks like a record-breaking
season for pleasure boating
on American lakes, rivers and
ocean bays.
Manufacturers estimate there
will be about 5,300,000 recrea
tional craft afloat this year,
ranging from stubby outboard
runabouts to yachts in the six
figure price class.
And upwards of 20,000,000
people will be casting off for
anything from a spin around the
lake to a summer-long coastal
cruise.
Expensive Hobby
These water bugs spent over
$1,000,000,000 last year on boats
and equipment and other expen
ses connected with their hobby,
which now ranks with bowling
and hunting and fishing as one
of the three most popular parti
cipating sports in America.
But the sea fever has its head
ache. Mooring space at popular
boating havens has fallen way be
hind demand. The boat-makers
say there ought to be three times
as many moorage slips as there
are.
Professional boat-builders last
year turned out 200,000 new
pleasure craft while another
100,000 were put together by do-it-yourself
men. The NAEMB is
practically begging waterfront
communities to invest in "mari
nas," the equivalent of parking
lots for boats.
Need Trailers
Dozens of these, both public
and privately owned, have open
ed in the past two years. But
with waterfront space at such a
premium, many a boat owner
has solved his problem by getting
a trailer and keeping .his boat in
his own back yard.

the nomination off Circuit Judge
William G. East of Eugene as
U. S. district judge for Oregon.
Morse told a Senate judiciary
subcommittee Judge East had
been "deservedly honored" in
winning nomination to the posi:
tio. "He received the comme
dation of every lawyer I've ever
talked with who has been in this
courtroom," Morse said.
Judge East was received yes
terday by President Eisenhower
forwhat the jurists said was "a
very friendly little talk."
The nomination is expected to
be sent to the Senate next week
for confirmation. There was no
adverse testimony.

Building Permit Issued For Portland Glass Plant

mah county planning commis
sion has issued the largest
building permit it has signed
since it was organized a year
ago a $1,722,000 permit for the
Owens-Illinois Glass plant at
Parkrose.
Construction was expected to
start almost immediately on a
site between Northeast 92nd ave.
and 101st ave. near Sandy blvd.
The plant will manufacture
glass containers for the North
west and Alaskan markets and
will employ about 200 persons
at the outset. Completion is
scheduled for July or August,
1956.

Eisenhower has asked Congress
for an additional $139,334,014 to
cover farm loans, civil defense
planning, pay boosts, and other
items in the fiscal year starting
July 1.
