THROAT SPECIALIST VERSUS TONSILLOTOMY
the tonsillotome shown
RADIO PROGRAMS-THURSDAY
Program listed Mow arc received from Hie. radio ststioas and Hia Mail
Tribune luumn no responsibility eacept to mako such change a aro syppliea
Tonsillotomy means "clip
ping the tonsils, slicing off the
obstructing portion, by means of
the guillotine or tonsillotome,
an instrument with a ring
shaped guarded blade which one
places around the projecting por
tion of tonsil and then, with
trigger pull, instantaneously
completes the operation phtt!
This was the operation of
choice in horse and buggy days.
Indeed, in the standard text
books on throat diseases it was
the only tonsil operation men
tioned although one authority,
Kyle, 3rd ed., 1904, did say:
"If the tonsil is enormously
enlarged, boggy, and with
large crypts in which there is
a tendency to accumulation,
associated with the condition
known as caseous tonsillitis,
the tonsil should be removed
(tonsillectomy) by means of
Tonsillotomy is a minor opera
tion, involving no greater risk
than the extraction of a tooth.
It gives as good results today as
it did when Topsy was a colt.
Although I haven t encount
ered them, I do not doubt that
fatalities have occurred from ex
traction of a tooth and from ton
sillotomy. If so, they must be
extremely rare.
Today I received another
newspaper item such as readers
send me from here, there, and
everywhere an item headed "3-Year-Old
is Dead After Tonsil
lectomy" the child died sud
denly, in hospital, after
a tonsil and adenoid operation,
Was that major operation
really necessary?
I doubt it.
The third argument of a
throat specialist In defense of
tonsillectomy (his own words)
we printed the first, second,
andifth here the other day,, is
this:
3. Partial removal of surface
tonsil tissue is frequently fol
lowed by the inclusion of the
remaining tonsil tissue in a bed
of scar tissue, which, preventing
surface drainage, may cause
more local infection and sys
temic absorption than if no op
eration had been performed.
This is a fine hypothetical ob
jection to tonsillotomy, but in
actual practice physicians have
found virtually no evidence to
sustain the idea.
4. Your assumption that the
tragic complication of cardiac ar
rest is attributable to tonsil
lectomy seems to me unjustified.
Cardiac arrest is known to fol
low a wide range of. other sur
gical operations .
lowed administration of an an
esthetic alone, before any sur
gical procedure had been under
taken. ' That is true. However, when
the heart stops beating (cardiac
arrest) in the course of or imme
diately after tonsillectomy the
doctor who Advised or per
formed the operation, it seems to
me, will ask himself ten thous
and times:
Was the major operation real
ly necessary?
KV fol-1 lerer should study also Little leeon

calcium metabolism is a primary cause
of allergic sensitivity. I believe.

What plays or films, if any,

A The hero of G. B. Shaw's

"McTeaeue" by Frank w orris,
which was made into the film

and hips, 38. She is not married.
. Q.Who said, "Everything

The Reverend James Smith of

at the age of 101. If that isn't the

is? Incidentally, at the age of 99,
the Reverend Smith was the fath
