On Memorial Day how better can we honor those who
gave "the last full measure of devotion" than to place
patriotism above self interest and pause in our com
mercial activities to rededicate ourselves to the cause
for which they gave their lives.

Portland Weather
Bureau Reorganized
Portland (U.R) The Port
land weather bureau was reor
ganized today in a move that re
duced personnel and also ex
panded public services.
The 70-year-old bureau lost its
name in the process, however.
All the operating functions of
the bureau will be moved to
Portland International airport
and combined with the aviation
weather service under the title
of "Weather Bureau Air Sta
tion." Electronic equipment already
at the airport will perform most
of the measuring and recording
functions automatically, accord
ing to Col. Eckley S. Ellison,
meteorologist in charge.
The move will enable the
weather bureau to provide more
complete service 24 hours a day,
Col. Ellison said, instead of only
eight hours a day.
In addition, a daily "radioac
tive fallout" report will be pre
pared for the guidance of civil
defense officials.
Portland Man Dies
In Crash of Plane
Oceanlake, Ore. (U.R) Rob
ert Anthony Butler, 40, presi
dent of Butler's Tire and Battery
Company in Portland, was killed
yesterday afternoon when his
light plane crashed into the side
of Cascade Head during a fog.
Butler was alone on a flight
to North Bend.
Two McMinnville fishermen,
Charles Merkle and Frank Lane,
said they saw the plane circle
two or three times as they fished
at the mouth of the Salmon riv
er. Then they saw it fly off to
ward Cascade head and a few
moments later they heard the
sound of a crash.
Butler was thrown from the
plane and apparently killed in
stantly, state police said. His
body was taken to Newport.

dan, 28, Eugene, was killed yes
terday when struck by logs
which rolled off a truck east of
here.

About One in Eight Americans Drinking
Fluoridated Water; Controversy Rages

out of eight Americans is drink
ing water containing a tiny
amount of fluorene, a substance
which the American Dental As
sociation says will work won
ders in cutting down tooth de
cay. Whether more of us will get
a dose of this invisible, taste
less chemical with every glass
of water is one of the hottest
issues to stir up a tempest in
American town halls and city
council chambers since the end of
World War II.
It is as much a controversy in
Ukiah, Calif, (pop. 8600 as in)
New York City (pop. 8,000,000).
Both of these cities are balking
at proposals to have their water
supplies fluoridated.
Philadelphians drink fluori
dated water, Chicagoans do not.
Citizens of Palo Alto, Calif.,
voted to fluoridate their water
while on the same day at Sunny
vale, eight miles away, citizens
voted not to.
A Tulsa, Okla., dispute over
fluoridation got clear to the U.S.
Supreme Court.
The charges against fluorida
tion range from "Socialism"
through medical recklessness to
invasion of the constitutional
right of freedom of worship. Op
ponents warn that the health of
the nation will be jeopardized
by consumption of a chemical
better known as an ingredient of
rat poison.

Medical Association, the Amer
ican Dental Association and the
American Public Health Associa
tion, which cite any number of
examples to show that fluorine,
in the right amount, helps cut
tooth decay and has no harmful
effect on the human body.
The most recent ammunition
on behalf of fluoridation comes
from the 10-year "Newburgh
Experiment" in New York. The
water supply for the 30,000 in
habitants of Newburg, N.Y., was
treated with one part fluorine to
one million parts water from
1942 to 1952.
Results Released
At the same time, the nearby
city of Kingston, N.Y., was used
as a "control." No fluorine was
added to its water.
The New York State Health
Department just released results
of the 10-year test showing that
by 1953, children at Newburgh
had 60 per cent fewer decayed
permanent teeth than children
at Kingston. At the same time,
the general level of health in
both cities remained the same.
Statistics like this are used by
public health associations in lo
cal campaigns to have more and
more water supplies fluoridated.
The American Dental Associa
tion reported this week that 1071
U.S. communities are now fluori
dating their water. They have a
total population of 20,597,747.

Case Rejected
Ten taxpayers at Tulsa, Okla.,
went to court charging that a
plan to fluoridate Tulsa's water
supply was an "unwarranted ex
ercise of police power" and vio
lated the First Amendment's
guarantee of freedom of religion.
Their case, lost in Oklahoma
courts, was rejected by the U.S.
Supreme Court early this year.
