IHIas Long Communist Record
By LYLE C. WILSON
United Press Correspondent
Washington (U.R) Julius
Emspak, just relieved of punish
ment by the Supreme Court, has
a for midable
record of Com
munist front
activity. He is
counted among
the dangerous
men in the
American la
bor movement.
Emspak is
general secre
tary of the
Lyle C. Wilson United Electri
cal, Radio and Machine Workers
of America which operates in op
position to the CIO's anti-Communist
union of similar but not
identical name: The Internation
al Union of Electrical, Radio
and Machine Workers. The CIO
expelled Emspak's union in 1949
along with others charged to be
Communist fronts or party line
organizations.
CIO Cleans House
The Communists almost had
swallowed the CIO before the
f, anti-Communists among the lead
- ership got the wit and muscle
to throw them out. The House
Un-American Activities Commit
tee long had been fingering Com
munist unioneers before the CIO
got around to cleaning house.
On Dec. 23, 1948, the commit
tee cited 13 major officials of
seven CIO unions as Communists
and named 20 unions as Com
munist controlled. Emspak and
his union were on the lists.
These and other aspects of his
record did not count, however,
when the Supreme Court de
cided Emspak was not guilty of
contempt in refusing to tell a
congressional committee whether
he was a member of the Com
munist Party. The court absolved
Emspak and two others of fines
and prison sentences by way of
the Fifth Amendment.
It was Emspak and a couple
of other pals who sweet-talked
the late Adolph J. Sabath into
sponsoring a phony win-the-peace-conference
shortly after
World War II ended. Sabath was

from Chicago, the oldest mem
ber of the House. The conference
'he was suckered into launching
ultimately was tagged as a Com
munist front although newspaper
publicity exposed and killed the
movement at its inception.
Emspak was associated, also,
with the notorious American
Peace Mobilization which was
set up by the Communist Party
in the United States during the
life of the Hitler-Stalin pact. The
mobilization collapsed the day
Hitler invaded the Soviet Union
and the mobilizers clamored in
stantly for war.
Basic Communist strategy re
quires penetration of basic
American industries. The field
in which Emspak's union oper
ates is not only basic, it is deli
cate and sensitive in terms of na
tional defense and security. In
the days of the Hitler-Stalin pact,
American Communists used the
strike weapon savagely to check
the flow of munitions to the
British. The' Kremlin was root
ing then for Hitler to win.
The Communist Party line is
to cause discord on homefront
in time of peace and to help ef
fect Soviet Russian foreign pol
icy in time of war. That makes
all labor leaders who have fol
lowed the Communist Party line
suspect and dangerous.

Flying Finn Twins
Said Fed by Force
Los Angeles (U.R) Mrs
Catherine L. Peter, sister of the
flying Finn twins, said today
she has received word from a
federal official that her hung
er-striking brothers have been
forcibly fed at the Springfield,
Mo., medical center for federal
prisoners.
Mrs, Peter said she was in
formed of the forced-feeding in
a letter from James V. Bennett,
director of the Federal Bureau
of Prisons.
She quoted Bennett's letter as
saying, "They still however, are
resisting the tube feeding. We
hope they will desist because,
of course, it involves hazard
and it is not altogether impossi
ble that some accident might
occur.
Mrs. Peter said the letter was
dated May 16 and indicated the
forced feeding began about May
11, two weeks ago. ar

London (U.R) The staunchly
Conservative Daily Express re
ported a drop in Conservative
voting strength today on the eve
o f Thursday's parliamentary
elections, but Prime Minister An
thony Eden said, "I "think we
shall win."
The Daily Express, published
by former Conservative Minister
Lord Beaverbrook, reported a
Conservative sag of Vz of one
per cent since May 18. This coin
cided with Anglo-American dif
ferences over the Big Four talks
and a strike crisis at home.
Three Per Cent Margin
The newspaper poll still pre
dicted a 3 per cent margin for
the Conservatives which would
give them a majority of "be
tween 90 and 95 seats" in the
House of Commons. But it was
recalled in the last election the
Conservatives sagged sharply
just before the vote and ended
up with a working majority of
only 18 votes.
Eden took notice of the drop
when he said, "Good intentions
will not win the election for us
only votes can do that."
vThe voting Thursday is to elect
a new House of Commons. The
party winning a majority of
seats Labor or Conservative
will name a new prime minister
for five years, either Eden or
Labor Leader Clement Attlee.
The election also will decide
whether Eden or Attlee sits down
with President Eisenhower,
French Premier Edgar Faure and
Soviet Premier Nikolai Bulganin
at the top-level Big Four talks
this summer.
Preparation for the talks and
the transatlantic differences over
topic and timing had become a
campaign issue. The late-break-

Washington XU.R) The Fed

permit to the Coos-Curry Elec

Bald mountain hydroelectric
project.
The project, to be located on
the Illinois river of Josephine
and Curry counties, Ore., would
include a 100-foot high concrete
overflow diversion dam and a
92,000-kilowatt powerhouse. A
preliminary permit gives the
holder a priority while conduct

As We Live
By ELIZABETH HU1LOCK, PH.D.
Spouse Keeps Falling
For Teenage Girls
Men are sometimes infatuated
with teenage girls almost young
enough to be their daughters.
(Q) "I am in my late twenties
and my husband is in his early
thirties. We have been married
for six years and have two chil
dren. My problem is that my
husband is often infatuated by
teenage girls and goes through
a lovesick period when he hard
ly eats and is gloomy and sullen
at home. Now he is in love, or
thinks he is, with an 18-year-old
girl who works where he does.
He tells me that he doesn't want
to marry her and that he could
get over it if he did not see her
every day at work. He has sug
gested that he leave his job. Do
you think this is a good solu
tion to the problem?
(A) it would be only a tempor
ary solution, so I would not call
it a good one. There is no guar-
antee that
there will not
be another
girl where he
works next.
Furthermore,
as the father
of two chil
dren, he can
not afford to
pull up stakes
and move to
Dr. Herlock
another job every time he falls
in love with an adolescent girl.
If he is lucky, he may step into
another job right away that pays
as well as the one he just left.
But he cannot count on luck all
the time, and when his luck
turns against him you and the
children will pay a heavy price.
The only real solution to his
problem lies within himself. He
must realize that he married you
and has two .children. His first
obligation is to you three. Being
lovesick and leaving jobs is cer
tainly not the way to meet his
responsibilities.
You cannot control his
thoughts. He must do that. But
you can make the home such an
attractive place that you can
compete with any girl he falls in
love with and come out the vic
tor in the end.-

mg controversy stemmed from
Conservative campaign speeches
when Eden and Foreign Secre
tary Harold MacMillan indicated
differences with Washington over
the conference agenda and dura
tion. Eden called for "ample time"
and Mr. Eisenhower for "two or
three days." The Socialists im
mediately said the United States
agreed to the talks only to help
Eden. The Daily Herald, the La
bor Party organ, asked, "Are the
four-power talks going sour be
fore the election?"
Eden Tuesday night denied
charges of "dilly dallying" as a
"fantastic absurdity," but he did
not comment on the Daily Her
ald suggestion. Instead he at
tacked disagreement within the
Labor Party on the hydrogen
bomb and foreign policy.
