From Camp White

Mrs. R. B. Gibson, the diminu
tive Gray Lady who assisted at
the Red Cross birthday party for
May, dropped in at Dominews
office, while waiting for the fes
tivities 1o start, to tell about her
trip to Mexico with her husband
in April.
"We flew from Nogales to Ma
zatlan and spent some time at
Guadalajara," she said.. The
progress being made there in
construction of dams, lakes and
highways represents a remark
able awakening.
"But they still have mules and
burro." in place of modern trac
tors, although they are beginning
to use gasoline engines for much
of their work."
Mrs. Gibson was much im
pressed with the ornate character
of the churches, the interior of
which she found decorated with
cold and banks of flowers. The
siesta, between 2 and 4 in the
afternoon, is one ceremony that
everyone observes, and the mar
kets and stores are deserted dur
ing this period. The peasants, she
adds, bring their own produce
to market to offer for sale.
In every other respect, the life
of the people is not different
from that in our own country.
Food and lodging are somewhat
cheaper, but the quality and ac
commodations are similar to our
own. The buses and the buildings
are modern for the most part,
and people dress largely as we
do.
She called attention to the
fact that an estimated 2,000 "re
tired" Americans are now livin
in Guadalajara, where the coun
try club has become a center of
activity.

considerable interest in handi
crafts of the handicapped at
Camp White, and have given aid
materially to ' the program.
Eve Prentice and the 27 accor
dion band members who were to
make the trip to British Colum
bia for the Victoria Day con
cert at Victoria, marched into
the theater Tuesday night for a
dress rehearsal, as a special tri
bute to the April birthday mem
bers, who were quarantined that
month. The VFW Auxiliary
staged the party.

Camp White has a "newspaper"
all its own to supply the mem
bers with current events and
ether items of interest. It is the
bulletin board in the main corri
dor leading to the mess hall. At
one time, this was a heterogen
ous affair, scattered along the
wall, which grew like Topsy
from a single panel.
Special Services Chief Frank
Glonning recognized the .import
ance of this service and had a
ten panel board installed with
the following departments:
American Legion and Auxiliary,
VFW Post 6412. Veterans of
World War I. DAV and Auxili
ary. Chaplaincy, Library, Rec
reation. Arts and Crafts, Volun
teer Services and one for Mis
cellaneous Information.
This latter includes about 15
or 20 notices of personal belong
ings for sale, from watches and
radios to shoes and automobiles.

teeth and has offered to rent
them for 50 cents a day, or sell
the set for S75 cash.
Letters from congressmen
news clippings of interest to
veterans, and matters pertaining
to, meetings and special enter
tainment features keep the in
terest flowing by almost daily
changes.
In the high wind that blew
over this area recently, a carrier
pigeon made a "forced landing"
in the yard adjoining the coffee
shop. Al Settles turned from his
grill to note the bird in its ex
hausted state, and went out to
be of assistance.
The pigeon welcomed his ap
proach, and was taken into the
kitchen to get food and warmth.
The state police were notified,
after it was discovered the car
rier bore an identification tag,
and two deputies came out to
rescue the tired little messenger.

that the wage survey, which has
been occupying the attention of
Personnel Officer H. J. Heitkem
per this spring, has been com
pleted and preparations are be
ing made to operate under its
findings by July 1. In any event,
he said, the new schedule will
go into effect ' no later than
Sept. 1.
In an exchange of dentists,
Dr. Arthur Levin, of the dental
clinic, has been transferred to
the VA Hospital at Palo Alto,
Calif., and is being replaced by
Dr. Rudolph R. Meesis, from that
station.
Mrs. Ardath Auel, who has
been at Camp White for the past
four years as a staff nurse,, has
resigned, effective June 6.
