Chewing Gum Practically Only Item
Not Affected by Higher Production Cost
New York (U.R; Now, you
take chewing gum. Has the price
increased, like that of practically
everything else? No. -
Has the size shrunk; like that
of well, so much other stuff
you buy across the counter? No.
Is the quality worse than in
the .good old days? No, it's better.
Gum chewing is one American
national habit that doesn't cost
more than it did when grandpa
was a pup. The five-cent, five
stick package is more than half
a century old, and there's no
sign of a price hike or a size
dwindle.
Several Answers
How come? There seems to be
several answers. One is that you
are chewing between four and
five times as much as grandpa
did. Maybe that's because you're
more nervous. Gum chewing is
fairly well established in psy
chological circles as a tension
reducer, and modern times have
produced a lot of tension.
Per capita chomping in the
United States in 1914 was at the
rate of 39 sticks a year. By 1949
It had risen to 135 sticks a year.

cent of it, though, is in pennies

ity from synthetic rubber latex
that's put into it.

the cars from crashing through

Terminal Co., which runs Union
station, said 23 persons were in
jured 12 passengers, 10 B&O
employees on the train and one
track worker for the terminal
company.
The track worker, Charles
Green, was the only person hos
pitalized. He suffered a possible
leg fracture while working at
the rear of the parlor-car section
when the train slammed that
section into him.

the changeover to mechanization
in the factories within the last
15 years, utilizing high-speed
machines and improved produc
tion methods.
One source close to the in
dustry said that the big rise in
costs to chewing gum manufac
turers was at the start of the
second world war, when the
prices of ingredients, paper,
freight rates, and labor costs all
mounted up.
Narrower Margin
"Before tha.t," the source said,
"they made one heck of a lot
of money. Now there's a nar
rower margin. They're still mak
mg money, and paying divi
dends. But great fortunes aren't
being made as they were be
fore." He said that between the two
world wars, some 10 or 12 men
in four companies made real
fortunes in chewing gum.
The price of chicle, the gum
my stuff that comes from the
sapodilla tree of Central Ameri
ca has doubled. But the manu
facturers for many years have
been mixing with it, in propor
tions which each firm holds as
its own secret, a synthetc resin
base usually polyvinyl acetate.
This makes a chewier product.
That's one technical problem,
though, that's unsolved. How to
keep the product from sticking
to shoes and gumming up
carpets.
Marine Lieutenant
Slain by Wife
Washington (U.R) A Marine
lieutenant's wife was charged
with murder today in the fatal
shooting of her husband. She
told police she and the officer
argued after he tried to tell her
how to cook pork chops.
Police said Mrs. Elizabeth Go-
ricki, 42, told them she was
cooking in her nearby Arlington,
Va. home last night when her
husband, 1st Lt. Edward Goricki,
39, told her she didn't have
enough water on the pork chops
and didn't know how to cook.
She said he added water him
self and later pushed her down
the cellar steps leading from the
kitchen and then dragged her
back up.
Mrs. Goricki told police her
husband then went into a bed
room, took a gun from a dresser
drawer and fired it once in the
bathroom. She said she was
afraid he meant td kill her.
Details of what happened aft
er that are being investigated,
police said.

To Do Sculpture
For Navy Carrier

time, the work of a woman
sculptod will be installed aboard
a United States naval vessel.
Pretty young Elizabeth Gor
don has been commissioned to
do the bronze bust of James
Forrestal for the recently-
launched super - carrier named
for the late Secretary of Navy.
Miss Gordon, famous also for
her portraits, also is designing
the Forrestal memorial medal,
which will be presented to Presi
dent Eisenhower. The slender
artist spends her work days in a
large combination studio-apart
ment in Manhattan and week
ends in a country house in Con
necticut. Miss Gordon, whose
married name is Mrs. Robert
Chandler, said many of her ideas
for sculpture come to her during
walks in the country.
Often she does non-serious
sculptures "just for fun," she
said.
One such is a large wooden
statue of a classic Greek figure
locked in combat with an almost
shapeless blob, faintly resem
bling man.
"This," she said, "is my one
little protest against modern
art."

Mexican Farmers
Fleeing Hangman
Ixfepec, Mexico (U.R) Fright
ened farmers were reported arm
ing and fleeing to safety in the
mountains today following re
ports that 50 farmers have been
hanged mysteriously in the past
two months.
The panic to hide was touched
off by the hanging Friday of
seven men in the railroad town
of Ubero. The fleeing farmers
claimed these murders were the
latest in a series of similar inci
dents that have taken at least
50 lives.
Authorities speculated that
the hangings might be retaliation
by ranchers for thefts of cat
tle by farmers. A defense minis
try spokesman in Mexico City
said the ministry had not en
tered the situation because it
was a state matter.
Fifty state troopers guarded
Ubero in the state of Aoxaca to
day, and police in the area of
Salina Cruz on the West coast
continued their search for the
20 armed men believed respon
sible for Friday's hangings.
