One quick glance at the en
velope was enough for Tim.
"Got any more of these," he
aeked, laying it carefuly aside
before going on through the rest
of the collection. The owner
shook his head.
While Tim examined the
other pieces, I gave the envelope
a careful going over. It was a
type I had never seen before.
There were two stamps on it.
One was the fairly common 30
cent orange brown Item in the
Columbian Exposition Series of
1893. The other was one I had
never even heard of before.
It was of diamond shape,
green in color and it bore the
peculiar legend, even to the
misspelling. "FRESNO AND
SAN FRANCISCO BICYCLE
MAIL ROUTE."
Those words appeared In an
oval around a picture of a mes
senger boy on a -bicycle pedal
ling like mad up the middle of
the San Joaquin Valley as he
rushed the mail in latter day
pony express style to the city
by the Golden Gate. In the left
horizontal corner of the stamp
I made out the figure 25. Op
posite it was the abbreviation
"Cts." for cents. In the upper

If you ever come across a
pressed glass with a harp or
lyre pattern on it, give plenty of
immediate thought to getting it.
But don't take too long to
make up your mind if the piece
happens to be a goblet. For if
you do. It is very likely that
you'll discover someone else has
already snapped it up.
So far as I have been able to
learn, the harp pattern was
made in only two factories in
this country one in New Eng
land and the "other in Pitts
burgh, Penn. The harp motif
appears on whale oil lamps, both
with and without handles, on
spoonholders, salts and bowls.
Generally speaking, however,
the most valuable item it has
been used on is the goblet. which
even when found in chipped con
dition carries a distinct pre
mium value.
While harp pattern pieces are
usually made of a good lead
flint quality glass, the workman
ship on most of the items is
rather crude, a fact which gen
erally indicates they were made
In the early 1800s.

It looked like the very first
quarter the Philadelphia mint
ever turned out. Sitting there
on a little blue velvet pillow on
the mantelpiece, the coin still
seemed to have what collectors
call the bloom of the mint upon
it.
I asked Tom how much he
had paid for such a treasure.
"Not a cent. Pink. Anne found
it in a chamois bag that some
silver came in."
Anne, his wife, produced the
bag, removed a few pieces of
Georgian silver .flatware and
handed it over. She knew it
wasn't the silver that interested
me in this case, but the bag
which was of a double thickness
of chamois, the real article from
tome beast that had probably
been knocked off an Alp well
before the American Revolution.
Anyway, on the inside of the
bag was a small pocket, not
much bigger in area than the
size of the coin which she had
found in it. Above the pocket,
in gold thread, was the name
and date Sarah Lewes, 1792.
"I guess someone thought it
a good luck piece," Anne said.

vertical corner were the initials
"ARU." Below was the one word
"Strike."
Though the envelope bore
Fresno return address, it was
postmarked San Francisco, July
9, 1894.
Tim inquired the price of the
bicycle mail route cover.
"Thirty-five dollars," said the
owner calmly.
Tim complained that the
catalogue price of the bicycl
stamp was only $7.50, which
was also the amount listed for
the other one.
"Makes no difference to me,'
the owner said. "There - were
only 380 letters carried by the
bicycle mail route service during
the great American Union Rail
road strike back in 1894, and
this is one of them. Further
more, it has the mispelling of
San Francisco which was cor
rected on some of them."
The owner fell silent for
moment.
"As a matter of fact," he said
presently, "I think it would be
no more than fair of me to de
mand $40 for it. That's it, $40.
Without another word, Tim
took out his billfold and counted
out the money.
GLASS WITH HARP PATTERN
hand, the workmanship is ex
cellent, showing that in all prob
ability they were produced dur
ing the 1850s and most likely in
the Pittsburgh plant of the
M'Kee Brothers.
Those that I have seen are all
of clear glass, the bowl having
six panels, each of which carries
a harp. One of them one which
I discovered being used as
icily glass because its owner
had only that one left from
set and did not know its value
had a flared rim. All the
others were straight.
The first one I acquired was
by accident. It was in a box of
assorted glassware which I
bought for $5 on the strength of
a piece I thought could be sold
for $10.
- A friend of mine exclaimed
over the purchase, congratulat
ing me on the goblet and dis-
'regarding everything else.
I understood why when I
looked it up a little later, learn
ing that the harp motif pressed
glass goblet alone, while often
valued at around $50, has sold
on many occasions at prices
ranging up to $90.

in contact with any other metal
in the bag."
Date of the coin was 1796
which seemed somewhat late
for the first United States quar
ter.
But Tom immediately pro
duced a new coin catalogue
which reported that while dol
lars, halves and half dimes were
minted from 1793 to 1795, it
was not until 1796 that the gov
ernment got around to turning
out quarters and dimes.
Noting that only 5,894 quar
ters were minted in the first
year the coin was produced.

catalogue.
"Ridiculous, isn't it," said
Tom. "Why when I pointed that
out to a friend of mine last night
a fellow who has been collecting
U. S. coins for years, he agreed
with me and offered me $80 for
the quarter. .
I refused, of course. For a
coin in this condition probably
couldn't be duplicated for five
times that much."
