After Prom Party
Medford Lions club sponsored
a party for Medford Senior high
school students and guests, who
attended the Junior-Senior Prom
May 14. The party was held at
the YMCA where all the facil
ities of the "Y" swimming pool,
gymnasium, lounge, and dining
room were available. Breakfast
was served from 2 to 3 a.m. on
Sunday to over 100 young peo
ple. Alva Perkins of the Medford
Lions club was chairman of the
committe of twelve which ar
ranged the program.

Both Miss Gardiner and her
fiance are seniors at the Rogue
River high school. She is the
niece of Mr. and Mrs. Walter E.
Cook, formerly of Rogue River.
The bridegroom-elect is a son
of Mrs. Ella J. Elder of Foots
Creek.

and Robert Larson, whose en

The bridegroom-elect is a son
of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Larson,

Miss Ricks is a graduate of
Springfield High school and
since then has been employed
in Medford.
Her fiance is a Medford High
school graduate and is employed

League Meeting
Opening Today
Kenneth Lindsey, for 17 years
an Independent member of the
British Parliament, and Kenneth
O'Connell, University of Oregon
professor of law, will be guest
speakers at the annual conven
tion of the League of Women
Voters of Oregon tp open in Eu
gene today.
Mr. O'Connell. will address
the Monday evening dinner
meeting, speaking on "Women
in Politics." Mr. Lindsey, at
present teaching International
Relation in the Political Science
Department of the University of
Oregon," is scheduled to speak
on "Through British Eyes" at
the Tuesday meeting.
Highlights of the three-day
meeting will include a mes
sage from national by Mrs. Ed
ward L. Hughes, president of
the Portland League, who with
Mrs. Ronald K. Campbell of
Corvallis, president of the Ore
gon League, has just returned
from the national Council meet
ing in Washington, D.C. At Mon
day's dinner meeting the new
Leagues of Oregon will be hon
ored. These include Beaverton
league, and the Provisional
Leagues of Coos Bay, Milwaukie,
and Oswego.

The bridegroom-elect also is

and is attending the University
of Oregon.

burg. Specialist Says
New Tufted Rugs
Are High Quality
There's something new under
foot, in the form of high-quality
moderate-cost rugs that are tuft
ed, instead of woven, according
to Mrs. Myrtle Carter, Oregon
State college home furnishing
specialist.
All rug manufacturers are add
ing equipment for tufting, a pro
cess similar to hooking, to their
plants, the specialist reports.
Reason for this Is excellent
consumer response to the tufted
floor coverings, which gives
more quality for the money that
woven rugs, because of faster
and therefore lower - cost manu
facturing processes. More fiber
goes into each rug, however, and
the pile is higher. For this rea
son, high - priced wool is not
generally used for tufting.
Most tufted rugs are made
of cotton, rayon and blends at
present. Special soil-resistant fin
ishes are beginning to be applied
to the synthetic fiber rugs, ac
cording to the specialist. Need for
such treatment was pointed out
by the present trend toward
light-colored rugs. Those con
taining man - made fibers tended
to soil faster because many syn
thetics have a static attraction
for dirt.
Another trend in floor cover
ings this season is toward more
pattern and design, to comple
ment the many plain textures be
ing shown in other home furnish
ings. Tweeds, florals, and con
temporary treatments in pile
rugs and metallic accents in
smooth - surface carpeting are
among present offerings, Mrs.
Carter noted.
Decorators are currently ad
vising use of one patterned rug
with others in coordinated solid
colors, says Mrs. Carter. More
room-size rugs are also being
used.
Though wool is still top favor
ite as a rug fiber, selection of
synthetics is widening consider
ably, according to Mrs. Carter.
And rayon and blends are now
in second place. Cotton was sec
ond until recently, but has been
displaced.
Pink is important in rugs, as
well as in clothes, this season,
the specialist pointed out, and
blends well with the mauves,
sandy beiges, greens, and blue
greens which are also good now.
Medford Members
Named to Council
A report on a grand council
session held May 14 and 15 at
Eugene will be made at a meet
ing of the Talisman Rosebud
council, Pythian Sunshine Girls,
when they meet Thursday, May'
26, at 7 p.m., at the Pythian
building.
Grand council officers elected
from the local council are Miss
Darla Walker, grand royal pre
late, and Miss Banra Miller,
grand royal warder.
Eleven members, the royal ad
visor, four counselors and two
honorary mothers attended. The
trip was made by car.
Supreme Royal Princes Irene
Payne instituted the council
with the assistance of Mrs. Paul
Myers, St. Helens, supreme in
stalling officer; Mrs. Ruby
Zacker, Redmond, grand chief,
supreme royal prelate; Mrs.
Harry Bryant, Medford, su
preme royal mystic one; Mrs.
Fred Patton, Eugene, supreme
royal guide; Mrs. Leroy Cline,
Medford, supreme royal re
corder. To clean a discolored waffle
iron, use a wire brush on the
waffle grids while they are hot.
After cleansing, season with a
little vegetable oil.

Of Jacksonville Club Attend Meeting

Jacksonville Garden club were
special guests at a meeting of
the club last week at the home
of Mrs. Ray Coleman. Officers
for the 1955-56 term also were
elected.
Miss Mary Hurst, a charter
member and the second presi
dent of the group, spoke and not
ed the increase in membership
and the many projects which
the members now undertake.
Mrs. Stella Beach, also a charter
member, recalled club history
now nearly forgotten. The club
was organized 16 years ago.

nity club.
Hal Bishop announced that

city June 12 and will also fea
ture an art exhibit.
Mrs. Vola Tolman Blue an
nounced that members' paintings
are to be exhibited at Mon Desir
Dining inn. Special lighting is
being arranged, and the public
will be invited to the initial
showing.
John Ahem of Medford Art
center announced that he will
conduct classes at the center
featuring technique in various
media.

a scene on Rogue river.
After the business meeting a
lecture on the relative merits of
modern and traditional art was
given by the society's president,
Mr. Bishop.

PTA Announces
Coming Election
The last meeting of Oak Grove
Parent-Teacher association for
the school year will be devoted
to installation of officers for the
coming year. The session will be
held on Monday, May 23, at 7:30
p,m. Mrs. Henry Kammann, dele
gate to the state PTA conven
tion, will give her convention
report.

grape, the state flower, was read
and Mrs. Farley gave a talk on
day lilies, which are becoming

A roundtable discussion on
horticulture problems was con
ducted. Mrs. Lawrence Luy and Miss
Claire Hanley, members of the
club, attended a regional meet
ing of garden clubs at Tacoma,
Wash., in April and Mrs. Luy
reported on activities at the ses
sion. She also displayed sou
venirs from the trip.
Mrs. Janosky was appointed
delegate to a state convention to
be held in June and Mrs. Surles
was appointed alternate. Mrs.
Stone won a prize.
Mrs. Coleman and her com
mittee served refreshments. The
tea table was decorated with
lilacs.
