There is a 'shabby, old barn in
this little settlement of the So
ciety of Friends, the Quakers,
that is either one of the most
important relics of American
history or just a shabby, old
barn.
Practically everybody agrees
that the framework of the barn
was made from the timbers of a
hip named "Mayflower" sold for
salvage to farmer William Rus
sell in 1623.
But it wa3 THE Mayflower,
the one that took the Pilgrims
to Massachusetts in 1620? I wish
I knew. All I can say after check
ing around is that some people
think it is but more think it
isn't.
The story begins when Farmer
Russell bought the ship hulk for
what was then the equivalent of
bout $500. He upended it on his
property in this backwater of
London and it made a very ser
viceable barn indeed.
Property Sold
Some 30 years later he sold all
his property to the Friends. It
was in his original farmhouse
that William Penn and other
Quakers were arrested in 1670
and sent to prison even though
they argued they were only wor
shipping as conscience dictated.
As time went by the barn be
came a community center for the
Friends, some of whom began to
wonder whether the similarity
of name might be more than co
incidental. One of these was Dr.
James Rendel Harris, curator of
manuscripts of the John Rylands
Library in Manchester and a

crack in one of the Mayflower
beams as reported in the journal
of William Bradford, governor
of the Plymouth colony.
Tongu in Cheek
Mr. Harris convinced a lot of
people, but some of his old asso
ciates in the Quakers wonder
whether he was writing with
tongue in cheek.
"He was a great leg-puller,"
said Stephen Thorne, recording
clerk of the Quakers.

Microscopic Test
Of Sputum Detects
Most Lung Cancer
San Francisco (U.R) The
American Cancer society an
nounced today a study of more
than 1000 lung cancer patients
has indicated that more than 90
per cent of this kind of cancer
can be detected by microscopic
examination of the patient's spu
tum. The study was conducted by
Drs. Seymour Farber and David
A. Wood of the University of
California School of Medicine,
with support of the ACS.
Relatively Accurate
The significance of this tech
nique of sputum study lies in the
fact that it is a relatively accu
rate and an easy approach to
diagnosis. It is sufficiently inex
pensive that it can be used rou
tinely on- all patients in whom
lung cancer is even a remote
possibility.
It is generally recognized that
a great many cases of this dis
ease can be cured by operation
if the disease is recognized early
enough.
Symptoms Generally Mild
But in its early stages lung
cancer is difficult to detect be
cause symptoms are generally
mild and they are much like the
symptoms of mild diseases.
Now with the new methods of
detecting the disease, more pa
tients can be brought to the oper
ating table in time to catch the
cancer in its early stage.
No Live Virus Shown
In Cutter Vaccine
Boise, Ida. (U.R) Tests on a
portion of the Cutter-manufactured
Salk vaccine used in Idaho
show no live virus to be present
in the serum, Health Department
Director L. J. Peterson said to
day. x
Seventeen polio cases three
of them fatal have been report
ed among children who were
inoculated with the vaccine and
13 cases have been recorded
among victims who were closely
associated with someone who
was vaccinated.
Peterson said about 200 cubic
centimeters of Cutter vaccine
have been tested at the U. S.
Public Health service's Rocky
Mountain laboratory in Hamil
ton, Mont.
About 1,000 CC's remain to be
tested, Peterson said.

And the ancient buildings
preservation trust, under whose
jurisdiction the barn would come
if it were the Mayflower, reports
that although the main timbers
appear to be ship's timbers, there
is no evidence they came from
the colonists' boat.
A Replica Planned
Project Mayflower, which
plans to sail a replica of the May
flower to the United States next
year as a gesture of Anglo
American unity, is building its
craft from plans by naval archi
tect William A. Baker of Hing
ham, Mass. The model of the
Mayflower from the Boston State
House has been sent here so the
builders can duplicate its exter
ior decoration.
Why not measure the old barn
if an exact replica is wanted?
"We don't regard the barn as
the original Mayflower," said
Michael Mordaunt-Smith, one of
the officials of the project.
So the weight of expert evi
dence is against the barn.
But here's something to think
about:
Johanna Jones, widow of
Christopher Jones, master of the
Pilgrims' Mayflower, received
permission to sell the ship as
salvage in 1642. Four years later
a "Mayflower" became a barn in
Buckinghamshire.

THE CITY OF MEDFORD DOTH
ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. That it is the intention of
the Council to cause to be constructed
a sanitary sewer line to serve the real
property on the orth side of Stewart
Avenue from Hamilton Street to the
west for 251 feet in accordance with
the plans and specifications on file
in the office of the City Manager at
the City Hall, Medford, Oregon, to
which plans and specifications ref
erence is hereby made for details and
estimated costs thereof, and to assess
upon each lot, or part thereof, adja
cent to and benefited by such im
provement its proportionate share of
the cost of said improvement as pro
vided by the Charter of the City of
Medford.
Section 2. The Council will meet in
the Council Chambers at the City Hall
on the 7th day of June, 1955. at 7:30
P.M., at which time and place the
owners of said adjacent property are
hereby called upon to appear before
said Council and show cause, if any,
why said improvement should not be
constructed and why property should
not be assessed for the construction
thereof.
Section 3. That warrants for the
costs of the aforementioned improve
ment shall bear interest at four per
cent' (4) per annum and shall con
stitute general obligations of the City
of Medford .and the terms and con
ditions of said warrants shall be as
provided by in Oregon Revised Stat-

by publishing this Ordinance once in
a daily newspaper, printed, published
and of general circulation in said City
at least ten (10) days before the date
of said meeting, and by posting five
copies of this Ordinance in five public
and conspicuous places in said City
for a period of ten (10) days prior to
said meeting.
