Engineer Corps Gives
Ducks Lift Through Locks

Army Corps of Engineers proved
yesterday it is a government
agency with a heart.
A flotilla of ducks a mal
lard hen and five ducklings
approached the Willamette locks
here, honking imperiously for
passage downriver. Lockmaster
John Tatone obligingly opened
all four locks in succession and
lowered his lightest load of the
day to the river below.

chalance, as though they had
passed through the locks every

AT MADIGAN HOSPITAL
Fred L. Armstrong, an Army
private, son of Mr. and Mrs.
James Armstrong, who recently
moved from Medford to Central
Point, is a medical patient at
Madigan Army hospital, Tacoma,
Wash. He was serving until re
cently in Germany with the 16th
infantry regiment and had been
there for about 21 months when
he was returned to the states by
plane for hospitalization. He has
been in the service for about two
years and received basic train
ing at Ft. Ord, Calif. Before en
tering the Army, Private Arm
strong worked at Newberry's
store in Medford and at Western
Union.

RECEIVES PROMOTION
Pvt. Luther D. Holsapple, son
of Harris V. Holsapple, Phoenix,
has been promoted to private
first class, according to a re
lease from Fort Campbell, Ky.,
where Holsapple is stationed
with medical company, 503rd
airborne infantry regiment, 11th
airborne division.
Since entering the service,
Holsapple has volunteered for
airborne duty and has graduat
ed from the airborne school at
Fort Benning, Ga. He is a
qualified parachutist with 20
jumps to his credit.

way patrolmen to. search for the
driver of a car he saw plunge
into flood - swollen Deep Fork
Creek Thursday.
An hour later, Felix Louis'
Klimkowski, 41, of Harrah,
Okla., the driver, showed up.
Klimkowski swam from his
sinking automobile unseen by
Thompson and hitched a ride to
town. He was unhurt.
Suspect Cleared
In Lebanon Beating
Albany, Ore. U.R) Ivan Dale
Hetland, 22, was cleared yester
day by a district court jury of j
three men and three women of a
charge of assault and battery on
a Lebanon man whose wife has
carried on a crusade against al
leged welfare fund misuse.
The jury took less than an
hour to free Hetland of the
March 9 attack on E.'A. Gall, 65.
Mrs. Gall had written a letter
to a Lebanon newspaper describ
ing what she said were misuses
of welfare funds. Authorities
said at the time the beating of
her husband may have been a
result of the letter.
Hetland testified he acted in
self defense and that Gall had
raised his hand to strike him.

Free of Fire Hazards
City firemen noted no hazards
yesterday in 73 of 120 residences
inspected in their citywide pro
gram. Possible causes of fire were
found in 47 homes and 58 recom
mendations were issued for cor
rection of hazards.
Thirteen residents turned
down the offer of inspection.
Firemen stopped at 250 houses
and found no one home at 117.
Fire Mashall Truman Nelson
inspected three business occu
pancies, a warehouse and a pub
lic garage yesterday. He issued
three orders for correction of
hazardous conditions.
Sets Election Canvass
. The . Jackson county rural
school board will meet Monday
at 1:15 p.m. in the county school
office in the courthouse to can
vass the vote in the recent elec
tion on the rural board budget
for 1955-56, according to county
school officials.
Unofficial returns, from 16 of
the counties 20 second and third
class school districts, showed the
budget, calling for a levy of
$1,599,895.53, passed by a mar
gin of 274 to 97.
