Rivals Shudder Before
Card Tossers; Jackson
Blanks Brooklyn Nine
By MILTON RICKMAN
- United Press Sports Writer
There was a time when Eddie
Stanky would look at his St.
Louis Cardinals' pitching statf
and shudder, but today things
have changed it's the oppos
ing clubs who look at it and
shudder.
Once considered just a bunch
of humpties, the Cardinal pitch
ers suddenly have blossomed
into a staff of world-beaters with
an amazing record of only one
run allowed in the. last four
games. -
Rookie Larry Jackson, a 23-year-old
right-hander, pitched
the Cardinals, 3-0 Tuesday night.
Jackson scattered 10 .'"hits in
handing the Dodgers their first
whitewashing of the season and
boosting the Cards into third
place in the National league.
Backed by an attack that in
cluded homers by Red Schoen
dienst and Ken Boyer, Jackson
was the second Redbird rookie
to hurl a shutout in as many
' days. Rookie southpaw Luis Ar
royo blanked Pittsburgh, 6-0
Monday.
Joe Nuxhall helped Cincin
nati climb into sixth place with
a 9-2 victory over the Pirates,
who dropped their sixth game
in a row. Nuxhall yielded only
eight hits in recording his fourth
conquest and started the Red
legs on their way to victory with
a three-run double in the second
inning.
Milwaukee Beats Giants
Milwaukee moved into second
place by. beating the Giants, 9-4,
as lanky Gene Conley posted
his fifth victory. The Braves
blasted five . New York pitch
ers for 15 hits, Joe Adcock lead
ing the way with a homer and
three singles. Don Mueller's hit
ting streak was snapped at 24
straight games.
The game between the Cubs
and Phillies was postponed be
cause of cold weather.
In the American league, south
paw Alex Kellner pitched and
batted Kansas City to a 1-0 tri
umph over 'Washington. Kell
ner gave up eight hits in gaining
his third victory and collected
two of the six hits off loser
Mickey McDermott.
Ford Shuts Out Chicago
Lefty Whitey Ford of the
Yankees also- won a 1-0 game
against the White Sox even
though Chicago out-hit New
York seven to four. A sixth in
ning streak of wildness by Billy
Pierce paved the way for the
only run. He walked Mickey
Mantle and Yogi Berra, the
first two men to face him in the
sixth, each on four pitches.
Mantle stole third from where
he scored on an infield out.
The loss left Chicago a game
behind Cleveland, which also
lost, 10-3, to Boston. Jackie Jen
sen hit a three-run homer for the
Red Sox and Eddie Joost con
nected for one with the bases
empty.
v Ex-Dodger Erv Palica picked
up his second victory for Balti
more by beating Detroit, 3-2.
One of Palica's former Dodger
teammates, Billy Cox, homered
off loser Ned Garver, while
rookie catcher Hal Smith was
credited with two runs batted
in.
