Continues To Pound
Area of Dust Bowl

Gully-washing rains kept up
their downpours in the heart of
the Southwest's Dust Bowl to
day. Delighted farmers in the Texas
Panhandle reported up to five
inches of rain. More downpours
fell through Texas, Colorado,
Nebraska and western Kansas.
But the crop saving rains were
not an unmixed blessing. They
were accompanied by a tornado
near Chillicothe, Tex., flood
threats, and violent electrical
storms.
Car Picked U?
The Chillicothe twister near
the Texas-Oklahoma border last
night picked up a car from a
highway and set it down neatly
in a field. The driver, unhurt,
sat out the storm in his car and
then drove back onto the road
to resume his trip.
In Oklahoma, meanwhile, an
area in the state's eastern cen
tral section was shaken by an
explosion generally believed to
have been caused by a meteor.
Seen in Several Towns
The blast, following a flash in
the sky, was heard, felt or seen
in Wewoke, Seminole, Shawnee,
Holdenville, Lima and Okemah.
Creeks were rising in both
states. A cloudburst south of
Abilene, Tex., sent Elm and Jim
Ned creeks out of their banks,
clasing a farm road, while Brady
creek was up 20 feet, 10 feet be
low flood stage and only four
feet under Highway 377 bridge
north of Brady, Tex.

Cop Arrested
In Hijack Plot
Las Vegas (U.R) Authorities
foiled an elaborate plot to hi
jack $500,000 in gambling ca
sino profits from a postal mes
senger with the arrest last night
of a police officer, his wife, and
two other men.
Police Chief Al Kennedy said
the plotters planned to waylay
a police car carrying the postal
messenger and the cash as it left
the Post Office for the Union
Pacific Depot.
But more than a score of po
lice officers, sheriff's deputies
and postal inspectors pounced on
three of the suspects minutes be
fore the messenger car was to
leave. Kennedy said" an inform
er tipped them about the plot'
two weeks ago.
Arrested in front of the post
office were George Anderson,
31, a Las Vegas poiice officer;
his wife, Joyce, 24; and Robert
Schomer, 29, and electric com
pany employee. They were book
ed on conspiracy to rob the U.S.
mails.
Navy Said on Threshold
Of Atomic Break-Through
Washington (U.R) Sen.
Henry M. Jackson said today
the Navy is on the threshold of
"a big break-through" into at
omic power for surface ships as
well as submarines.
A year from now, Jackson said
in an interview, he expects the
Navy to present "a vastly ex
panded program" for construc
tion of atomic submarines. '
In addition, he said, the Navy
is making progress in develop
ing an atomic-powered aircraft
carrier. But he expressed doubt
that this ship will be included
in the next military budget.

police, then reluctantly paid a
25-cent fine.: in retaliation, May
or Andrew Milnar sent a letter
to the state highway chairman,

He entered the Air Force last
Septemmber, receiving basic
training at Parks Air Force
base. He graduated from the
propellor course with honors,
the release said.
BACK FROM GERMANY
Pfc. William Clegg, son of
Mr. and- Mrs. W. B. Clegg, 2235
Oakwood dr., returned home last
week end after spending 23
months in the Army, more than
half of which was spent in
Germany. He was separated last
week at Ft. Lewis, Wash. Young
Clegg is a graduate of Medford
High school, and attended
Southern Oregon college before
joining the Army.
HOME ON LEAVE
Sgt. Charles W. Cook Jr.. son
of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cook,
143 Kenwood ave., arrived here
Monday-to visit for about a week
while on leave after returning
recently from Japan. He was
overseas about 30 months and
has been in the service about
three years. Sergeant Cook at

George Roy Clough, 64, elected
mayor on a platform that fav
ored sin, took office today but
the once notorious Galveston red
light district he proposed to re
open remained shut down.
Clough's proposed meeting
with all the gambling operators
in town to find out how "the
boys" think the city should be
run, apparently had been post
poned indefinitely, too.
The tall, dignified owner of
radio station KLUF who decided
to run for mayor because the
city once cut off his water when
he had cancelled checks to prove
he had paid a big water bill,
said he was a man who has been
"terribly misquoted by the
press."

Roberts Funeral Arrangements Set

vate funeral arrangements were
made today for former U.S. Su
preme Court Justice Owen J.
Roberts whose term on the high
court was marked by conflict
with many of the New Deal,
policies. i
Roberts, who died Tuesday at i
the age of 80 following a heart
attack at his nearby Bryncoed
farms home, had served on the
nation's highest tribunal for 15
years, most of them during the
Franklin D. Roosevelt era.
In 1924. President Coolidge
appointed Roberts as a prosecu
tor in the Teapot Dome scandal.
As late as 1941, President Roose
velt named him head of the gov
ernment commission which in
vestigated the attack on Pearl
