Vaccinated Children

A United Press survey showed
today that 82 children in the
United States and Canada had
come down with polio after re
ceiving Salk vaccine inocula
tions. Five of them have died.
The breakdown included 29
cases in California, 17 in Idaho,
5 in Texas, four in Pennsylvania,
three each in Louisiana, Oregon
and Nevada, two each in Georgia,
Indiana, West Virginia, and Ha
waii, and one each in Missouri,
Delaware, Virginia, New York,
Colorado, Ohio, Washington, Il
linois, Michigan and Connecticut.

DON'T JUNK THAT BORIC ACID
Two or three years ago two
physicians reported, in Journal
of Pediatrics, a case of boric acid
poisoning in an infant. The poi
soning resulted, the doctors be
lieved, from the use of borated
talcum powder. Enough boric
acid was absorbed through raw
places on the skin to poison the
baby. They added that 109 sim
ilar cases have been reported in
medical journals throughout the
world.
Whoopee! Here was a dandy
idea for a rash of articles by
"science writers in popular
magazines. Boric acid, which has
been universally used as a mild,
nonirritating antiseptic in tal
cum and other toilet powders for
infants and adults, in salves, and
lotions, in solutions for ears,
nose, eyes, mouth, and for many
other purposes, by physicians in
private practice and in hospitals
and dispensaries for many years.
After the "science" writers
had wrung every bit of copy out
of the discovery from the
queries I receive it is evident that
a lot of people are now afraid to
use boric acid in any way the
physicians who reported the poi
soning of the baby by borated
talcum published in the same

Hollywood (U.R) One of the
hottest "new" stars this year is
a 51-year-old part - time farmer
who's been an
actor for 24
years and is
best known for
the jut of his
jaw.
And Jimmy
Cagney admit
ted today that
the last five
years have not
Aline Mosby been the most
sizzling in his career.
But in the curious way of show
business, Cagney got a hot role
by accident and it led to another
and another. He wound up with
a new career.
Not Unusual Feat
"This sort of thing is inher
ent to show business," he shrug
ged. "In vaudeville I once tried
five terrific numbers that flop
ped. The sixth one played but it
was the worst act that played in
anybody's theater. You just
never know."
Cagney's good luck this season
began when he was working at
Paramount for a western, "Run
for Cover." Bob Hope asked him
as a gag to apper in "The Seven
Little Foys" as George M. Co
han, "the portrayal that won
Jimmy an oscar in 1954 for
"Yankee Doodle Dandy."
Gels Many Offers
Jimmy won so much publicity
from the bit that other offers be
gan to roll in. Director John
Ford asked him to play the cap
tain in "Mister Roberts," ana
from preview reactions Cagney
may win an Oscar nomination.
He then co-starred ""with . Doris
Day in the Ruth Etting story,
MGM's "Love Me or Leave me."
He signed for another MGM film
and is being paged for musicals.
"No plan to this," he said. "It
just happens that way."
Cagney thinks his lean years
started with his first indepen
dent production after leaving
Warner Studio, "The Time of
Your Life." Many an actor has
discovered it isn't so easy to be
on your own.
Much-Imitated Star
"It lost money," he said. "Then
I did 'Lion in the Streets' which
got excellent reviews but the
studio didn't promote it.
"After that the scripts that
came in were just violence for
the sake of violence, nothing but
hoodlum roles. So I stuck mostly
to my cattle raising."
Cagney has always been a star,
by proxy, on the nightclub floor.
Imitations of his tough - guy
mannerisms are required ma
terial for comics.
"They imitate the young punk
standing on the corner who uses
a tick to call attention to him
self," said Cagney, and did an
imtation of the imitators imitat
ing Cagney.
"Yet I did that only once, in
Angels with Dirty Faces.' And
they always have me talking in
that hoarse, breathless way I
don't talk like that," insisted
Cagney in that hoarse, breathless
way.

many other investigators who
make startling discoveries these
days, they have been mislead by
an inaccurate test for boric acid
in the urine. So the inference
that the baby had absorbed it
through the skin was wrong. But
the "science" writers are willing
to forget the whole thing.
Thus, so far as tve Yankee
Wiseacre public may be con
cerned, it has suddenly become
dangerous to use boric acid in
any way, shape or manner. Even
if the "science" writers - should
see fit to publish a retraction of
their versions of the original
wrong inference, as the physi
cian did in the medical journal,
few magazine readers would no
tice the retraction and as for the
countless publications that
quoted the "science" writers'
half ; baked warnings about bor
ic acid to their readers, all they
know is what they find in the
magazines.
The moral I'm trying to draw
is that you poor oh, well,
what's the use arguing with an
Irish I mean a person who sub
scribes to a magazine naturally
wants to get some useful infor
mation out of it and just think
how many victims developing
rheumatiz (not arthritis) are re
strained from trying to reserve
the degeneration process by just
such a "science" writers' warn
ing concerning vitamin D and
"deposits" of calcium.
