Set Wednesday

Eagle Point Eagle Point Par
ent - Teacher association has
planned the annual Achieve
ment night ?or Wednesday, May
18, at 8 p.m., in the high school
gymnasium. Exhibits will in
clude work done by the boys in
the wood shop, a fashion show
staged by the girls in the home
economic class, are work by the
Art club under the direction of
Lilah Hartzog, teacher, and spec
ial exhibits by the science
classes. Each class in the grade
school will- have a display of the
work done bv each student" dur
ing the year, and the teachers
will be present for discussion
with parents.-
One of the special features of
the evening will be a food sale,
ind everyone is asked to take
cake, cookies, or cupcakes that
can be eaten on the spot with
the cold drinks and coffee that
will be served.
Music Supervisor
Speaks for Club
Mrs. Lorraine Evensen. in a
classification talk, last Thurs
day, told fellow members of the
Zonta club about her position as
vocal music supervisor, of the
Medford schools. The speaker
stated that her aim is to see that
students in all grades from the
first through high school get
the best possible instruction and
to do this she observes at classes
and aids teachers in their plan
ning.
Mrs. Evensen said that per
haps her most interesting job in
the past year was the prepara
tion of scripts and arrangements
for seven half-hour programs
given on television. The last
large event of the year, she said,
will be the music fes'.val to be
given next week by 1,000 grade
school students in the high school
stadium. In conclusion, Mrs.
Evensen stated that students in
all Medford schools have excel
lent opportunities for musical
training.
Mrs. Elsie Butler, president,
announced that the next club
meeting will be the installation
of new officers and initiation of
new members.

Rogue Valley Navy Mothers
will meet Tuesday, May 17, at
1 p.m. at Girls Community club
for installation of officers. Navy
Mothers of Central Point will
conduct the ceremony.
The Medford group will hold
a card party at Camp White
Wednesday, May 13 at 7:3 p.m.
Those needing transportation
will meet at the home of Mrs.
C. R. Alexander at 7 p.m.

At Shower Party

er was held Wednesday, May 11
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.
S. Vessels, Ruch, to introduce
their daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ter
rence Vessels, the former Miss
Ruthie Greathouse. She is a
daughter of Mrs. A. S. Great
house of Russellville, Ark., and
the wedding was a recent event
in Arkansas.
Music was a diversion of the
evening and the bride was pre
sented gifts. A birthday cake
was presented the bridegroom in
honor of his birthday which was
that day.
At the party were the Misses
Rose and Kate Buckley, Molly
Ray and Rose Vessels, and Geor
ge Buckley, Keith Nelson, Hen
ry Vessel, the Mesdames Eliza

Sorority Chapter
Honors Mothers
Alpha Beta chapter of Beta
Sigma Phi held a Mother's day
brunch at the home of Mrs. C.
Rease Braley, 245 Valley View
drive. Decorations were in the
May Day theme. Twenty - six
members and guests attended.
The chapter held the last
business meeting at the home of
Mrs. Nils Edin, 1308 Stewart
avenue. The cultural program on
"Studies in Happiness'' was
given by Mrs. Clyde Ramsey.
Guests this meeting were Miss
Margaret McCay, Mrs. Jack Can
non, and Mrs. Doris Lassen who
is a member of the Alpha Sigma
Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in
Ashland.
Mrs. Lassen gave a report of
the regional convention of Beta
Sigma Phi held recently in Van
couver, B. C.
Mrs. Robert Hubbard assist
ed the hostess.
Travelers Return
From Trip South
Miss Lucille Lenox, 21 Al
mond street, and Mn R. D.
Troutman, 30 Rose avenue, re
turned to Medford last week.
Mrs. Troutman, who had spent
the winter in Altoona, Pa., with
Mr. Troutman who is employed
there by the Pennsylvania rail
way company, was met by Miss
Lenox at New Orleans, La. Mr.
Troutman accompanied his wife
to the Louisiana city and then
returned to Altoona.
Miss Lenox and Mrs. Trout
man then continued west after
visiting New Orleans where they
toured the city. They came by
way of San Antonio and El Paso,
Tex, Juarez, Mexico, Carlsbad
caverns, Tucson and Phoenix,
Ariz., and north by way of Ba-
kersfield, Calif.
Chapter to Mark
19th Anniversary
Chapter BE, PEO, will cele
brate its 19th anniversary at a
meeting Tuesday, May 17, at the
home of Mrs. Fletcher Fish,
Phoenix, at 8 p.m.
Mrs. R. G. Fowler will take
charge of the program.
To Elect-'
Wednesday Study club will
elect officers at a meeting set
for May 18 at Girls Community
club.
The meeting will follow a pot
luck luncheon, set for 12:45 p.m.
and members attending are
asked to take food and table
service.
Texas Students To Hear
About Honest Statement

today and "I am going to tell
those tall-talking Texas students
about the only honest statement
I ever heard a Texan make:

about, but at least we have
enough guts to stand up and lie
about it.' "
Portland University
Club Gets Bomb Threat
Portland" U.R) Portland's
University club was the target
of one of two bomb threats Sat
urday, both of which police be
lieved to be hoaxes.
Club secretary Carl Carlson
told police that a man - tele
phoned the club switchboard and
said "There is a bomb in the
club's engine room." Club em
ployees searched but found .no
bomb.
A second threat was reported
received by phone at a grocery.

Mrs. Emerson Anderson will
be installed as president of Med
ford branch, American Associa
tion of University Women, at the
next meeting of the group, a pot-
lock dinner scheduled for Wed
nesday, May 18, at 6:30 p.m. at
the Girls Community club. Also
taking office will be Mrs. Gor
don Mackenzie, first vice-presi
dent, Mrs. William Knope, sec
ond vice-president, and Mrs. Jim
McGoodwin, secretary. Mrs.
Stanley Jones, Jr., wil continue
to serve as treasurer.
Also on the program will be a
reading of a play entitled
"George," by Miss Jeraldyn Je
rome, Mrs. M. D. McGeary, Mrs.
Stuart McQueen and Mrs. Joe
Dugan.
Chairmen for the meeting are

L. Brown. Members are remind

To Meet Wednesday
Griffin Creek Griffin
Creek Extension unit will meet
at 12 noon Wednesday, May 18,
rather than 11 a.m. as was an
nounced previously by the
group. The meeting will be at
the Harper home, 1599 South
Columbus avenue, and officers
will be installed.

Central Point Women's Re
lief corps of Central Point will
meet Tuesday, May 17, in the
Legion hall. Members are asked
to take a flowering plant to be
sold at the meeting and the
money will be used for club
projects.

Plan Meetings
Phoenix Women's association
of Phoenix Presbyterian church
will meet at the church Thurs
day, May 19, at 10:30 ajn. for
a business session. Luncheon will
be served at 12 noon and a pro
gram will follow.
Mrs. Al Morin will review the
last two chapters of the book,
"Under Three Flags" and Mrs
J. R. Sides, Medford, will review
the book, "Within These Bor
ders," by John R. Scotford.
The luncheon committee is
Mrs. Rex Nicodemus, Mrs. Jim
Gardner, Mrs. Charles Marrs and
Mrs. Carl Kliever.
Friday. May 20, will be familv
night at the church. Mrs. Morin,
Mrs. Claude Hunter and Mrs
J. W. Webster are in charge of ar
rangements. A potluck dinner
will be served at 6:30 p.m. and
the committee will furnish des
sert, rolls and" coffee. A program
will be presented.
Phoenix Presbyterian church
will sponsor two food booths at
the annual May festival May 28.
Tuesday, May 17, has been set
as cleaning day at the church.
Members of the congregation are
to meet at the church at 9 a.m
Those attending are asked to
take cleaning equipment. Soaps
and cleaning materials will be
furnished.
A sack lunch will be served at
noon.
Convention Reports
Given at Guild Session
Shady Cove Reports of the
diocesan convention of the Epis
copal church, held recently in
Medford, were given at the last
meeting of St. Martin's guild,
Shady Cove. It was at the home
of Mrs. Glen Anderton, with Mrs
James Hopkins as cohostess.
Mrs. Adolph Larson and Mrs
Ralph Lane gave the reports.
Next meeting will be held
June 6 at 8 p.m. at the home of
Mrs. Larson.

About 1000 members voted
against the employer's "final of
fer." Results of the downstate
teamsters' vote were expected
later.
The union, which has been ne
gotiating with employer groups
at Los Angeles, has sought a lu
cent hourly wage raise this year,
and 8-cent raises for the follow
ing two years.
Teamsters have been offered
a nine-cent boost, to be followed
by nickel raises the next two
years, or a nickel-an-hour raise
each year for the next five years.
Union and employer officials
will meet at Los Angeles tomorrow.

Jascha Heifetz broke off a tour
of South America because of ill
ness Sunday night and left by
plane for the United States.
A spokesman for the Munici
pal theater said Heifetz was suf
fering from an "intestinal dis

tails. Heifetz was scheduled to
appear before a sell-out audience
at the theater tonight.
