C WD ALL'S BOAST RINGS TRUE
AS BRAVES HICK DODGERS 2-1
' By F. E. DOWN
United Sports Wriler
The Milwaukee Braves were
back in the National League pen
nant race today because Dei
Crandall made a pre-game boast
come true.
"I'm gonna hit one tonight,'
the 24-year-old catcher said be
fore the Braves took on the
Brooklyn Dodgers Thursday
night. "I just feel it in my bones."
Twelve innings later Crandall
hammered a 405-foot homer into
the center-field bleachers to give
Gene Conley and the Braves a
2-1 triumph over the Dodgers
and their fifth victory in six
games. The blow, off relief pitch
er Ed Roebuck, broke up a mag
nificent pitchers' duel between
Conley and Carl Erskine. Erskine
retired after the 11th in favor of
Roebuck, whose second pitch, of
the 12th inning was hit out oX the
park by Crandall.
Pilches Six-Hitter
Conley, who dropped a 2-0, 12
Inning decision to Erskine in
Brooklyn on May 2, yielded only
ix hits and one run a homer
by Sandy Amaros. Hank Aaron
blasted a 420-foot homer off
. Erskine to provide the Braves
with their first run.
The victory was Conley's
fourth of the year and his sixth
in jiine meetings with the
Dodgers during his career. It was
the Dodgers' second straight loss
after they won 22 of their first
24 games.
Sam Jones pitched a no-hitter
to give 'the Chicago Cubs a 4-0
victory over the Pittsburg Pirates
in the only other National
League game. In the American
League, the Washington Senators
shut out the Cleveland Indians,
3-0, the Chicago White Sox beat
the Baltimore Orioles, 6-2, and
the Boston Red Sox downed the
Kansas City Athletics. 12-7.
Score Loses Second
Mickey McDermott tossed a
four-hitter for his second win
and handed rookie phenom Herb
Score his second loss as the
Senators snapped the Indians'
six game winning streak. M-Der-mott
struck out nine batters and
Score seven.
The White Sox scored four
runs in the ninth inning to win
their 10th game in 14 starts and
move within two games of the
first-place Indians. Bob Nieman

Young Players
Outshine Vets in
Greenbrier Open
By ERNEST BARCELLA
White Sulphur Springs, W.
Va. U.R) The old pros set
out today to catch up with two
American rookies and a young
Australian ? sharpshooter in the
second round of (the 72-hole
Greenbrier Open golf championship.
Age gave youth a stirring bat
tle but it finally was forced to
yield the opening day leader
ship to the younger set Thurs
day when Mike Souchak of Dur
ham, N.C., Down Finsterwald
of Bedford, Ohio, and Australia's
Peter Thomson spread-eagled
the field with rounds .of 64 over
the par-70 old white course.
Vels Have 65's
Old-timers Johnny Revolta of
Skokie, 111., and Henry Picard
of Cleveland, who were winning
golfing glory when the three
leaders still were frolicking in
playpens, appeared at first to
have the opening day honors
tucked away with handsome
65's. But youth would not be de
nied. In rapid succession, Thom
son, Souchak and Finsterwald
came home with six-under-par
rounds to. take command.
'So spectacular was the open
ing day shooting that the two
perennial favorites Snead and
Bantam Ben Hogan were far
back in the field even though
each had a 69. Eighteen of their
colleagues were out in front of
them.
Moscow and Oregon taking on

Washington dented Oregon's

had it wh-n the going was tough.
The Huskies tallied two runs
in the third on three singles
around a sacrifice bunt and add

OSC took over top spot in
the five-team circuit with a 9-1
decision over Washington State
at Pullman. The Beavers tallied
