Honors at
Fox College
Roland Hartley, junior the
ology student at George Fox
college, Newberg, wag elected
president of the student body
for the coming year it was an
nounced at the school last Sat
urday. He is a son of Mr. and
MrsGeorge Hartley, 6854 South
Pacific highway, Medford.
Although elections were held
'lier in the year, announce
ment of the results was not made
until May 7 during the annual
' May day celebration at the
school. Young Hartley and his
fiance, Miss Joanne Joanis, were
members of the May court. Miss
Joanis is a daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Edward L. Joanis, Route 1,

Miss Patricia Schroeder,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. J.
Schroeder, 3410 North Pacific
highway, was co-chairman in
charge of arrangements for the

Young Hartley was also re
cently elected director of Region
3 of Future Teachers of Oregon
at a convention held in . Cor
vallis. His duties will include
planning and supervision of dis
trict meetings with FTA chap
ters at Linfield college, Pacific
university, Oregon College of
Education and George Fox col
lege. '
The young man won third
place in the annual Old Pulpit
sermonette contest held April
29. The old pulpit used in the
contest is the first pulpit used

Leaves Thursday;
Meeting Planned
A talk on music appreciation
by Mrs. Betty Flannery, music
who plays piano, accordion and
organ, will be featured at the
dinner meeting of Medford Al
trusa club, to be held at Eaton's
Dinner house Thursday evening,
May 12, at 7 p.m. Following the
talk, the group will adjourn to
the home of Mrs. Flannery where
she will give an organ concert.
Miss Myrta Otterdale and Mrs.
Esther Mohr, hostesses for the
month of May, will be in charge
of arrangements for the dinner.
Mrs. Maude Codding, president-elect
and delegate to the
10th district convention of Al
trusa " international to be held
at Walla Walla, Wash., May 14
16, leaves by plane Thursday
to represent the club, taking with
her an exhibit of colored slides
showing the varied projects car
ried on by the local club the past
year. Pictures of the winning
candidates for the local voca
tional training grant given by
the club this spring to assist old
er" women to re-enter the busi
ness and professional field of
employment are included in the
exhibit.
Tuesday evening the vocation
al committee met at the home
of Mrs. Ann Finley for a preview
of these slides to make the se
lection and write the continuity
Mrs. Codding will also report
to the convention on the club's
money making project, the Al
trusa place mat for local ad
vertisers which started last year
and is being carried on again
this month under the direction of
Mrs. Frances Grant and Mrs.
Edith Baker.
Medford Woman
Named to Office
Mrs. George Potucek, 387
O'Gara street, has been elected
financial secretary ,of a group
of women seeking to form a
state council of the Ladies' aux
iliary to the Carpenters' local.
Mrs. Potucek was named to the
office during a meeting of the
Oregon State Council of Car
penters held recently at the La
Grande which she attended as
a representative of Ladies' aux
iliary No. 421, Medford, to Car
penters' Local No. 2067.
Mrs. Potucek states that 10
auxiliaries of Oregon were rep
resented, and that at least five
must sign up for the council
before it can become official.
Several Attend
Symphony Concert,
a numoer oi ; Medford resi
dents traveled north last week
end" to attend concerts of the
Philharmonic-Symphony Society
of New York orchestra, given in
Corvallis and in Eugene.
Mrs. Bruno Pellegrini, Mrs.
Robert Scherzinger and Mrs.
Fred C. Lorish and son, Fred,
were among those who heard the
concert in Eugene Friday night
with Drimitri Mitropoulos con
ducting.
In the audience at Corvallis
Saturday night were Mrs. Ralph
Matlack, Mrs. William G. Reed,
Mrs. Richard D. Werner and Miss
Frances Thrun. Guido Cantelli,
guest director, conducted the
Corvallis concert.

Tea Announced

Women will hold a silver tea
Monday, May 16, in the home
of Mrs. Robert J. Keeney, 4126
Colver road. The event will be
gin at 2:30 p.m.
Speaking during the after-1
noon will be Mrs. Philip Lowry,
wife of State Senator Lowry,
and Mrs. E. A. Littrell, wife of
Representative Littrell. The two
women served as secretaries for
their husbands during the ses
sesion of the legislature which
just closed and will speak of
their work and experiences.
Women who need transporta
tion or direction to Mrs. Kee-
ney'g home are asked to meet
at the Presbyterian church at
1:45 p.m. Mrs. C. Rease Braley
will be at the church to guide
drivers and answer questions.
Anyone interested is invited
to attend, and those planning to

Honor Society
Pledges Student;
Two Visit Campus
Miss Patricia Lydiard, junior
at the University of Oregon, has
been pledged by Sigma Delta
Pi, honor society for students
majoring in Spanish. Miss Lyd
iard is the daughter of Mrs. W.
H. Lydiard, 16 Geneva street,
and is a member of Delta Gamma
sorority.
Mrs. Lydiard, accompanied by
her younger daughter, Peggy,
left this morning for Eugene to
visit her daughter. . They will at
tend the annual spring concert of
the University Singers, of which
Miss Lydiard is a member. She
sings soprano. The visitors will
remain over the week end, which
is being observed as mothers'
week end at the school, attending
the canoe fete which is being re
vived tfiis year and other festiv
ities. '

Name Chairmen
For Rose Show
General co-chairmen in charge
of the first annual rose show of
the Medford Rose society will
be Dr. and Mrs. L. G. Gentner,
according to Wynne P. Grier,
president of the group. The ev
ent is scheduled for June 3 in
the boys' gymnasium of Medford
Junior High, school.
The show will be open to the
public, and there will be no
entry fee. Information concern
ing the classes, grooming of ex
hibition roses, instruction on
when and how to cut blooms
and how to transport will be giv
en, it is stated.
The Gentners point out that
now is the tim to start spraying
and fertilizing of roses in order
to have them in good condition
for the show. Twelve trophies
will be awarded.
Information concerning the
show will be on the Home and
Farm television show tonight at
6:30 o'clock.
Student Awarded
Large Scholarship
Miss Marie Germann of the
1955 graduating class of St.
Mary's school recently received
word from the Catholic Univer
sity of America, " Washington,
D.C., that she' had been awarded
a four year, $2400 scholarship.
The award was based on the
result of a scholastic aptitude
examination. '
Miss Germann plans to pursue
a nurses' training course at Prov
idence hospital in Washington,
D.C., the hospital being affiliat
ed with the Catholic university.
She -is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. W. Germann, of Central
Point, Ore.
Howard School

social will be held in the Howard
school gymnasium by; Howard

Saturday, May 14, starting at 6
o'clock. Events of the evening
