On The Side
By E. V. Durling
(Distributed by King Feature Syndicate. Inc.)
IF THERE can be any one
can take my place
And make you happy
whom I grieve to grieve
Think not that 1
t can grudge, it but believe,
I da command you
to that nobler (race.
m That readier wit than mine.
V That sweeter face.
Christina Rosseixi
California says his grandfa
ther lived for 84 years in the
same house. Was born there,
died there. "Can you top that?"
h asks. Yes. sir. I can. John R.
Voorhees, well known New
Yorker, was born at 786 Green
wich Street, New York City, and
lived there all his life. Mr. Voor
hees lived to be 101.
Asking
Queries from clients. Q. How
long did Garibaldi, the ' Italian
patriot, live on Staten Island,
New York? A. Four years. From
1850 to 1854. He worked there
as a candlemaker. Q. Who
played in the title role in the
first, film version of "Office
Wife?" A. Dorothy MacKaill.
Lewis Stone played her employ
er. Natalie Moorhead portrayed
the employer'! wife. That was
about 25 years ago. Q. What is
the meaning of the Irish or
Gaelic expression, "Cushla
Machree?" A. It means "Darling
of My Heart."
Best Sellers
-. Bing Crosby's best selling re
cording is a Christmas platter
with "Silent Night" on one side
and "Adeste Fideles" on the
other. Nearly all Christmas re
cordings are profitable. J. Fred
.Coots, who wrote "Santa Claus
Is Coming to Town" has beenj
receiving fancy royalty checks
from the recording for years.
The "Red Nosed Reindeer" and
"I Saw Mama Kissing Santa
Claus" and "I'm Dreaming of a
White Christmas" are , other
Yuletide recordings that keep
selling well year after year. So,
young fellow, if you have a
talent for some writing, get to
work on some Christmas num
bers. If successful, they will pro
vide you with a lifetime income.
Divorcees
Many women successfully
survive divorce and subsequent
ly marry successfully. In fact,
the percentage of happy matri
monial alliances is higher for
second marriages than it is for
first. On the other hand, a di
vorce has a tendency to bring
out a wild streak in some fe
males. One statistician claims
that, of women in prisons di
vorcees outnumber other females
in the same age group by 7 to 1.
Longevity
To live longer, eat less. That
was the theory of Luigi Cornaro,
author of "How to Live to Be a
Hundred Years Old." Luigi, ad
hering to his own ideas of diet,
lived to be 102. This was all the
more remarkable because it was
in the 16th century when the
life expectancy was 31. Until he
was 40, Cornaro was a terrific
eater. Then he decided the
amount of food consumed had
a definite relation to longevity.
So he cut his eating allotment
to fourteen ounces of food a day.
His daily diet for 62 years con
sisted of a piece of bread for
breakfast, a cup of soup for
lunch and one egg for dinner.
Proposal '
Ever hear of a man proposing
marriage to more than 200 wom
en at the same time? It has hap
pened. One Sunday, at the con
clusion of his sermon, the cele
brated Methodist preacher, Lo
renzo Dow, amazed the congre
gation by saying, "I am a Candi
date for matrimony. If any wom
an in this church would care to
marry me let her rise.". Two
women stood up. The preacher
chose the one who was nearest
the pulpit. And so they were
married.
Horses and Women
Department store employment
managers always engage a few j
blonde and red haired saleswom
en. Not because of their selling
ability but because due to their
hair coloring they "light up a
store." The best saleswomen, as
to amount of goods sold, are
brunettes with green-gray eyes.
Dress Ordered in
Defense Department
Wiesbaden, Germany U.R)
U.S. Defense department person
nel must wear coats and ties "at
all times except when actually
participating in sports events," it
was learned today.
This latest development in the
growing dress consciousness of
the military was made known in
a directive from the joint U.S.
military group in Spain which
.reached Air , Force European
headquarters here.
It was expected to create an
even bigger furor than the one
touched off by the Army Frank
furt fashion arbiter, Col. John
H. Dilley. He recently made coat
and tie the order of the day after

South Viet Nam Chief
Ready To Step Down
Paris U.R) Bao Dai, chief of
state of South Viet Nam, told a
French newspaper today he was
prepared to step down and be
come a humble citizen if his peo
ple chose a republic to replace
the monarchy.
In an interview with the influ
ential Le Figaro, Bao Dai said:
"I have always said, and I re
peat now, that if the popular
choice is for a republic regime,
I will be happy to become a citi-

Asked for his feelings toward
Premier Ngo Dinh . Diem, Bao
Dai replied -that it is "incorrect
to analyze the present crisis" as a
simple question of personalities."
San Francisco (U.R) The
Coast Guard hoped to learn to
day for sure just who owns the
raft Lehi II.
A hearing into the raft's ill
fated voyage was to resume at
1 p.m. with Edward L. Torrey,
Alameda boat builder, , on the
Stand. -
I Wh.n u : - j
yesterday, Torrey was introduc
ing into evidence documents
which he claimed were pertinent
to establishing the ownership of
the Lehi II.
Torrey has claimed that he
was one of the principal owners.
So has Al Martin of Oakland.
And DeVere Baker, skipper of
the expedition, says the whole
thing was his idea.
The three man Coast Guard
board of inquiry is trying to as
certain the facts surrounding the
Lehi's voyage to Hawaii. The
voyage ended as did the first,
with rescue of the crew, in this
case by a Coast Guard cutter.
' First mate Lawrence Hall tes
tified yesterday that Baker at
first chose to stay aboard, the
swamping raft when the Cutter
Active' arrived. However, he
said when the other four crew
men got into the rescue craft,
"The skipper must have realized
what was happening and he
jumped in with us."
