    Indonesian Completes Tour of America;
Will Tell People US Eager for Peace
New York fU.K A lawyer
politician from Indonesia has
completed a seven-week tour of
the United States and is going
home to tell his people that
Americans are eager to keep
. world peace. .
Dr. Mohamad Roem, former
foreign minister of Indonesia,
visited Americans in their
homes, churches, schools and
meeting halls. He had a unique
opportunity to take the pulse of
, U.S. opinion.
"The people I met are always
ready for war if it is imposed
upon them," he said in an inter
view here. ''But they don't want
war."
Roem will carry this view
back to his populous nation
which recently became indepen
dent after years of Dutch colo
nialism. Indonesia is regarded
as a juicy target for Communist
expansion in Southeast Asia. Its
resort city of Bandung was the
site of the recent Afro-Asian
Conference.
Look For Peae.
. ''Everybody . is looking for a
solution that is peaceful," the
Indonesian leader said. "In my
opinion,; the majority of Ameri
cans do not think war is inevi
table. They think international
problems can be solved.
"It's my impression that the
American people have not yet
rracfe up their minds about the
Formosa question."
- Roem took part in panel dis
cussions on Asiatic affairs in 16
U.S. cities.
"Sometimes I was surprised at
how much the audiences knew
about Asia 3nd sometimes at how
little they knew," he said. "They
were always attentive, but I
found the public generally poor
ly informed on Asian problems."
He got the impression Ameri
cans are trying to learn about
Asia, however, and he said "I
Merger Vetoed for

Washington OI.R) The
Justice Department has vetoed
the proposed merger of two of
the nation's largest cement cor

"tend to create a monopoly."
The proposed consolidation in
volved the Ideal Cement Co. of
Denver, fourth largest in the
nation, and Superior Portland
of Seattle, which has the largest
facilities in the northwestern
market.
Word of the government ac
tion was disclosed last night by
a stockholder of Superior Port-
"land, who asked that his name
be withheld. He said plans for
the merger have been dropped
as a result of the federal stand.

French Actor Leaves
Grace Kelly Behind
Cannes, France (U.R)
French movie actor Jean Pierre
Aumont sadly departed today for
Paris, leaving behind actress
Grace Kelly whom he described
as "an adorable and sensational
woman any man would be proud
and pleased to. marry."
"What I am saying is on my
own responsibility," Aumont
said. "She is a wonderful wo
man . . . I. adore her . . . But
whether the feeling? are recipro
cal is up to her to say."
Miss Kelly did not see Au

Wrong Direction
"They are too much impressed
by the activity of our Commu
nists and too littl? impressed by
what we've been doing to im
prove our country in the field
of education, tor Instance," he
said. .
"When people asked me about
Communism, I would reply,
Why don't you ask what I am
doing in Indonesia rather than
what people I don't like are do
ing?' "
Roem predicted the Commu
nist Party would make no gains
in the Indonesia elections next
Sept. 29. '
He was critical of Americans
who refer, to such countries as
Indonesia and India as "neutral
ist." "In our hearts we are not neu
tral," he said. "We consider that
we have formed a democratic al
liance. You are used to think
ing in terms of military alliances.
But we are closer to you than
to countries which are not demo
cratic and it would be a pity if
you did not pay enough atten
tion to us."
