To Be Honored Guests
At Fellowship Session
A program honoring mothers
o and shutins will be conducted at
a meeting Tuesday, May 10, of
the Woman's Fellowship of the
First Baptist church. The 12
noon dessert luncheon and busi
ness session will be held at the
church annex.
Devotions will be led by Mrs.
Don Zimmers.

of the day's lesson.

Phoenix Festival
To Be May 28;
Ball Held Friday
Phoenix The seventh an
nual Phoenix May festival ball
was held Friday evening at the
Community club building and
the queen candidates were pre
sented. The festival is set for
May 28.
The young women are Miss
Barbara Hendrickson, a senior
at Phoenix High school, who
was chosen by the student body,
and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Roy Hendrickson, Edgevale or
chards, Medford; Miss Sharon
James, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Jack James of Fern Valley, a
junior; Miss Sheyla Thompson,
also a junior, and 'daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Thompson,
South Pacific highway, Phoenix;
Miss Donna Gearin, a senior and
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dewey
Gearin, South Pacific highway,
and Miss Dorothy Good, a jun
ior, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Herb Good, Hollywood orchards,
Medford.
Proceeds from the festival
each year are used toward the
Community club building fund
and the maintenance. A par
ade, dancing and booths are plan
ned for this annual event which,
held in a carnival atmosphere,
always attracts a large number
of visitors to Phoenix.
Visitors Honored
At Many Parties
Visitors in the city sre the in
centive for a number of parties.
This afternoon Mr. and Mrs.
Leland Clark will be hosts for
a cocktail party honoring Mr.
and Mrs. Herbert I. .Harkham,
Chicago, Mrs. Clark's parents.
About 70 guests are invited to
the Clark's home, 133 White Oak
drive.
Last evening Dr. and Mrs.
Dwight Findley gave a 'small
dinner party at their home on
the Old Stage road which hon
ored the Markhams. Twelve
guests attended. Preceding the
dinner the Clarks and Markhams
were guests of Dr. and Mrs.
Thomas Emmens for cocktails.
Friday evening the Markhams
and Mr. and Mrs. Adair Mon
roe, New Orleans, La., were
honored at a cocktail and sup
per party given by Mr. .nd
Mrs. A. S. Cummins and Mr.
and Mrs. Glenn L. Jackson. The
event was at the Cummins' home
on Hillcrest road.
The Markhams will leave for
their home Tuesday
Mr. and Mrs. Monroe, who
have been in Medford for the
past two weeks as guests of
their son and daughter-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Ally". A. Monroe,
will leave Monday for Man
chester, Vt., where they will
spend the next several months
at their summer home.

Ihey were lo accept a Freedom Foundation award for the school.
Medford won a principal school award for a documentation of
the annual student government project, the award including the
trip east for the two representatives. The two will visit V. ashing
ton. D.C, and the United Nations after leaving Valley Forge,
and will return to Salem May 11 for an Oregon awards lunch

to bring about a better way of understanding of the American

Medford Couple Home
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert A. Sims,
47 North Peach street, have re
turned to their home after being
away for four months. They
visited at Phoenix and Tucson,
Ariz., and spent a month in old
Mexico. There they visited the
cities of Guayamas, Mazatlan,
Guadalajara and the tropic
beach resort, San Bias.
The couple met many Ore
gonians on their trip into "Mex
ico. On their return to the states,
Mr. and Mrs. Sims completed
their trip by visiting the Carls
bad caverns, Grand Canyon,
Hoover dam, Las Vegas, Scot
ty's castle in Death Valley, and

Gold Hill News of interest
in the valley is the wedding
April 23 of Miss Marion
Loueen Smith, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Lawrence Smith of
Gold Hill, and Roy Alien Pettey
Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. O. F,
Morrison, Vancouver Wash. The
double ring ceremony was held
at Trinity Methodist church at
Four Corners, Wash. The Rev.
Joe Andrew Harding officiated
at 7 o'clock in the evening.
Mr. Smith gave his daughter
in marriage. Her waltz length
gown was styled with a bodice
of white velvet and a bouffant
mist grey and white taffeta
skirt. She carried a white Bible
with pink roses and stephanotis.
Mrs. Douglas Smith, Corvallis,
a sister-in-law of the bride, was
the honor attendant. Her gown
was of soft grey wool.
Leslie Pettey served as best
man for his brother. Douglas
Smith seated the guests.
The bride's mother wore a
navy blue afternoon dress with
white accessories and the bride
groom's mother was dressed in
a powder blue suit with brown
accessories.
A reception was held at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond
E. Pettey at Four Corners.
Mrs. Nelson Boomsliter, an
aunt of the bride, served the
punch, and Mrs. Morrison, the
bridegroom's mother, cut and
served the cake. Mrs. Raymond
Pettey assisted.
After their wedding trip the
couple went to Salem where the
bride is a sophomore at Willa
mette university, and where
they will make their home. The
bridegroom is a freshman at
Oregon State college.

Monday on Trip
Mrs. Iva Hill and Mrs. Clara
Smith plaiTto leave Monday for
a trip to New York City with
stopovers en route. They will
visit at Reno, Salt Lake City,
Cheyenne, Chicago, Niagara
Falls, Boston, Philadelphia and
Washington,' D. C. , En route
home they will visit the Carls
bad caverns and Los Angeles.
Mrs. Hill then will visit a sis
ter, Mrs. Mamie Claytor, at Long
Beach, and Mrs. Smith will be
with a daughter, Mrs. D. P. Tay
lor, at Palmdale, Calif. Mrs. Tay
lor is the former Miss Helen
Smith of Mefford. She moved
from here about five years ago.
Her husband, formerly of Grants
Pass, is a test pilot for the North
American Aviation company.
