'Whoy Can Beat Nashua?'
Kentucky Derby Question;
Field of 10 Horses Likely
Louisville, Ky. U.R)3 Belair
tud'i Nashua headed a field of
10 three-year-olds entered today
for the 81st and richest running
f the $152,500 Kentucky Derby

Everywhere, as the annual ju
lepjag went into high crescendo
and transformed this serene
Southern city into a 24-hour-a-day
fiesta of hilarity, there was
Just one question:
"Who can beat Nashua?"
There were no surprises or
changes in the field which was
set last Tuesday after the run
ning of the Derby trial.
Rex C. Ellsworth's Swaps was
the first horse named for the
mile and a quarter classic while
G. Rollie White's Trim Destiny
was the last.
Nashua Fifth Named
Nashua was the fifth colt
named for the first of the
triple crown classic and John
Fitzsimmons who signed the
lip at a cost of $250 said the
winner of the Flamingo Stakes,
the Florida Derby and the Wood
Memorial was ready to go. It
will cost another $1230 to start.
Summer Tan was one of the
last named for the race. Sherrill
Ward strolled into the racing
secretary's office about two
hours after it opened and named
the horse expected to give
Nashau the toughest fight for the
winner's purse of $108,400.
Post Positions
Nashua was tabbed a 4 to 5
favorite in the overnight line
which will appear on the track
program tomorrow with Sum
mer Tan next at 2 to 1. Then
came Swaps at 5 to 1, the Cain
Hoy entry at Flying Fury and
Racing Fool at 10 to 1, Jean's
Joe at 15 to 1, Honeys Alibi at
20 to 1, and Blue Lem, Trim Des

Kelly Tough In Clutches
As Rainiers Blank Solons
By PETER HAYES
United Press Sports Writer
Seattle righthander Bob Kelly
saved his best stuff for the
clutches last night in blanking
Sacramento, 5-0.
The 27-year-old ex-Cub yield
ed nine hits and was in hot wa
ter almost the entire game. The
Sacs left 14 men on base and
had the bases loaded in the
third, fourth and ninth innings.
But each time Kelly bore
down and got the side out, with
out benefit of any Seattle double
plays.
It was Kelly's third win with
out a setback, and it gave front
running Seattle a two game lead
over second place Los Angeles
in the Pacific Coast league.
Righthander John Briggs went
the distance for- the home team
and suffered his first defeat aft
er three wins. He was nicked
for 10 hits, three by Carmen
Mauro.
Other Games
In other PCL games, second
division clubs were winners as
San Diego downed Portland, 5-1,
on John Carmichael's three hit
ter; Red Munger pitched Holly
wood to a 2-1 win over San Fran
cisco, and Oakland outlasted
Los Angeles, 7-6.
In San Diego, the Padres gave
Carmichael a four-run cushion
in the first inning as Earl Rapp
whacked his fourth homer with
two on off Royce Lint (1-2) who
went the route for the Beavers.
Carmichael, rookie righthand
er, lost his shuotout in the sixth
when Dick Whitman powered
his third homer of the year. The
win squared Carmichael's record
at 1-1 and gave the Pads a 2-1
series lead.
