Reims Celebrates
Victory at Scene
Of German Signing
Reims, France (U.R) A
proud but defeated German gen
eral marched stiffly into a red
brick schoolhouse here 10 years
ago tomorrow and signed an
end to the greatest war in hu
man history.
Col. -Gen. Gustav Jodl. the
scowling chief of staff of the
German army, scrawled his
signature on the typewritten ar
ticles of surrender ending the
European phase of World War
II at 2:41 a.m. (French time) on
May 7, 1949 (5:41 p.m. May 6,
Pacific War Time).
As he signed, Adolph Hitler's
blood - soaked dreams of empire
vanished like a soap bubble. The
Wahrmacht had been crushed.
The tattered army, navy and air
force of Nazi Germany was sur
rendering unconditionally to the
Allies.
The war had flamed across the
map of Europe for more than
five years. The cost was 270,
000,000,000 and a generation
still unborn will be paying for
it. Uncounted millions of sol
diers and civilians were killed.
American casualties alone num
bered more than half a million
including 88,288 dead.
. And almost 10 years to the
day from the surrender, a new
West Germany regained its place
among the powers of the world.
Ceremonies in Bonn yesterday
returned sovereignty to Ger
many. A rearmament program
will begin immediately to raise
a 500,000-man German army for
defense against Communism.
Here in Reims, as elsewhere
in the world, the celebration of
the victory was tempered by the
memory of war. Church bells
rang , out, but ceremonies at the
surrender schoolhouse and at a
new monument to "martyrs of
the resistance" were attended
by amputee veterans and widows
and orphans." ,
The same bells in the Gothic
towers of the 13th century Reims
Cathedral rang out 10 years ago
when word, swept through the
city that a surrender had been
signed during the night.
No one except the highest Al
lied leaders and Supreme Com
mander Gen. Dwight D. Eisen
hower knew what was taking
place at the time. But at dawn
everybody knew.
They awoke a mother who had
fallen asleep after giving birth
to a child. When she was told
what the " bells were for, she
smiled down at her little girl
and whispered, "You will re
member this." She named the
child "Victoire."
Today 10-year-old Victoire
Thaubauld and thousands of her
fellow citizens watched a proces
sion move to the schoolhouse.
An urn. of ashes of Frenchmen
who died in German concentra
tion camps was to be installed
there. .
The "surrender room" on the
second floor of the school, offi
cially called the National Mod
ern Technical College, is a shrine
and nothing has been changed
. Twenty - thousand tourists
visit it every year A guide Is
there to pick up a pointer like
a general lecturing his staff and
trace the course of the final cam
paign on the original battle
map pasted on the green walls.
