hit two home runs and batted in
six tallies to give the University
of Oregon a 9-0 victory over
Portland university here, yester
day. Oregon used three pitchers
who gave up seven hits to the
Portland squad.
Ross hit a grand slam homer
in the first inning and also made
two great catches to help Ore
gon shut out the Portlanders.
He made one catch while rolling
down a bank in deep left field.
Portland pitcher Bill Wiitala
absorbed the loss.
The JDucks now take to the
road for games with Washington
State, Idaho, and Washington.

Parnel! Gets Okay
To Start Pitching
Baltimore (U.R) Mel Parnell,
the Boston Red Sox Southpaw
who hasn6r worked an Inning
so far this season, received an
okay to begin pitching today
from Dr. George Bennett of
Johns Hopkins hospital.
Parnell's ailment was de
scribed as . an "enlarged right
knee cap." Dr. Bennett said the
condition would not interfere
with Parnell's pitching but in
tructed him to begin wearing a
knee guard similar to those worn
by basketball playexs.

gutter the ball when-you have
to make a spare, or choke up on
the speech which sounded so fine
in your bedroom, take a tip from
Willard Nfxon.
Nixon is the strapping right
hander of the Boston Red Sox
who has been driving the New
York Yankees daffy for two
years. He beat them four times
last season, and already has gone
halfway that far this time
around, one of his wins being a
fine two-hitter.
The Yankees say they can't
understand it, yet it's merely a
matter of "diaphragmatic breath
ing."
Of course, the big Georgia boy
needs a fine fast ball and a good
change up to make it stick. But
one of the big reasons why he's
off to one of his finest starts in
a six-year major league career
is plain old deep breathing.
'Barney Google'
The word on this comes from
Jack Lacy, who was the original
of the "Barney Google" comic
strip character made famous by
Billy DeBeck after they were

Coach Skip Stahley said today
he would put his Vandals
through a full game scrimmage
Saturday, then wind up spring
football practice May 11.
Barring bad weather, the Un
iversity of Idaho mentor said he
would have a one-day margin
to finish his final eight practices
of the 20 allowed under Coast
conference rules.
There was speculation on the
Idaho campus that Stahley will
field an airminded team next
fall. Much of this spring's prac
tice has been devoted to . pass

"throwback to the old days of

this to the Yankees, but .Jack
says that what he did for Nixon
wasn't "anything very startling."
"Willard used to have a lot
of trouble in every game because
he would fight himself, run out
of gas and be unable to finish
nine innings," . Lacy explains.
"When they started to hit him
he'd tighten up.
"He also had a lot of difficul
ty with headaches at that time,"
Jack adds. "Whenever they told
him the day before that he was
going to pitch the next day he
couldn't sleep that night. It was
all duew to tension.".
Lacy Takes a Hand
Jack Fadden, the Bosox train
er, is a friend of Lacy's. He
knew of the work Lacy was do
ing teaching people how to relax
in front of audiences, and in
other . critical situations, and
working on. the Shakespeare
theory that all the world's a
stage, he asked Lacy to tae a
hand.
"He brought Nixon to me and
I merely taught Willard how to
use breath control, or deep
breathing," Lacy relates, "As
soon as he started to breathe
properly he lost his tension and
quit fighting himself."
Athletes, naturally, are under
great tension. So Lacy believes
that his "diaphragmatic breath
ing" would help them all if they
took a few of those free toe-rattling
breaths every time they got
in a tight spot. -
Don't think this is a man look
ing for customers. He is up to his
larynx in salesmen, his chosen
beneficiaries, and asks, please,
that athletes just get to their
deep breathing and leave him to
his.
But it would be interesting to
see what would happen if the
Yankee hitters started taking
big whiffs of oxygen every time
they stepped up to face the deep
breathing Nixon. Somebody
would be certain to get the air.

inning to subdue Ashland 10 to
2 here yesterday.
It was the Cavemen's fifth win
against no losses in the confer

Tornado come out ahead in to
day's mix here. .

here again on Friday while
Medford goes to Klamath Falls
for a Saturday doublebill.
The Cavemen tallied eight
runs in the fourth inning to bust
a 1 to 1 deadlock. The runs
came on only two hits. There
were two raps scored as sacri
fices in the inning but fielder's
options an errors were involved
and neither batter was out. Gene
Parent, Ashland's starting chuck
er, and his reliever, 'Moores,
faced 13 batters in the inning.
George Herr, GP's opening
moundsman, threw no-hit ball
until the sixth inning when Jack
Eberhart tagged him.
Mel Drews clouted a home

The wins were the fifth and
sixth this season for the Raiders
over the Owls. Southern Oregon

the second. Winning pitchers
were Lloyd Hoffine and Hal
Scheiderman. Southern Oregon
was without the services of Ned
and Ted Landers who have been
on the sick list. -

Pacific Coast league fined five
PCL managers yesterday for of
fenses ranging from profanity
to unbecoming conduct.
Tommy Heath of San Fran
cisco and Bobby Bragan of Hol
lywood were fined $50 each.
Heath was accused of shoving
an umpire. Bragan was fined
for sending a parade of eight
pinch-hitters to the plate for the
same player in Sunday's game at
Los Angeles.
" Tony Freitas of Sacramento,
Frank O'Doul of Oakland and
Fred Hutchinson of Seattle were
fined $25 each.
Freitas was fined for causing
an unnecessary delay of a game
by a prolonged argument, and
O'Doul and Hutchinson were ac
cused of using profanity.
Skeet Practice,
School Scheduled
Skeet practice will be the fea
ture this Sunday at Medford Gun
club although there will be some
16-yard trapshooting. Activity
will start at 10 a.m.
The club will hold another
shooting school from I to 5 p.m
Saturday. It will be for begin
ners and others desiring pointers.

tice is for preparation for a skeet
tourney at the club on Sunday,

Angeles here last night before
1,153 fans in a Portland Boxing
Club 10-round main event.
Woods weighed 136V to 134
for Aguirre.
The favored Woods started
taking command in the fifth
round after shaking Aguirre up
wun body olows. In the sixth
he caught Aguirre with three
solid rights that jolted him and
then moved in for the kill.
Aguirre's second threw in the
towel, which was illegal, but
referee Ralph Bruman awarded
the contest to Woods at that
point. There were no knock
downs.

Robinson, who figures he's
rounding into shape faster than
he anticipated, continues his
comeback campaign tonight in a
10-rounder against hard-hitting
Garth Panter.
And the 35-year-old Robinson
is confident that Panter, 10 years
his junior, will be another step
ping stone in his bid for an
eventual shot at the middle
weight title.
Robinson, who gave up the
world's middleweight champion
ship voluntarily in 1952 hi favor
