Subjects Taught
Three subjects are taught: rou
lette, blackjack and craps. A
"dealer" in gambling lingo
means the person who runs any
of these games. The school con
sists of two plain, rooms where
students stand around gaming
tables, some taking the part of
customers and some of dealers.
Freshmen study "cutting the

Blackjack students then
specialize in how to shuffle and
deal so you sharp-eyed customers
can't peak at the carsd. To pass
this course it also helps to be
able to count to 21.
To Graduate from blackjack
takes aoout six weeks, according
to the eminent president of this
university. Rod Morris, an ex
dealr. Roulette dealing also re
dealer. Roulette dealing also re
complicated crap table takes 10
weeks.
There are several required
courses for crap majors: the
stick, the dice, various odds and
bets and how to drone out, "place
your bets . . . dice coming out . . .
anybody the hard way. . ."
Personality Needed
But to get a diploma, a card
signed by the teacher, you also
have to have "personality."
"I wash out about 20 per cent
of the students because they're
smart alecky," explained the
professor. "A dealer must look
honest and calm."
Students attend classes two
hours a day, five days a week
for S20 weekly tuition. After
commencment they get jobs at
S150 a week for a six-hour day,
plus heavy tips. Morris calls
dealing "a good trade."
"I took this course because
it's better than being a cocktail
waitress," a lone girl student
said. "I got tired of being on my
feet all day."
Course Didn't Help a Bit
Unfortunately, players are
not allowed to enroll in the
school to sharpen up on their
systems. But "now and then a
tourist drops in and asks some
questions," smiled the teacher.
I took a fast course and pass
ed blackjack (a grade C in shuf
fling), stumbled through roulet
te and flunked at the crap table.
Then I rushed back to a ca
sino to try my luck at a custo
mer. My course at my alma ma
ter, I discovered, helped .me lose
faster.

Writers
The writers of the present,
especially those who write for
the films and television, do very
well financially. However, some
of the old timers did all right,
too. Besides, in their day there
was no income tax. Anyway,
here is an excerpt from the diary
of Samuel Clemens (Mark

I wish her luck. Brings to mind
I heard of a woman who had

daughter. She decided to try
just once more, for a girl. And
so, what? Her next birth was
triplets, three boys. She gave
up.

Falling in Love
Have you a daughter in her
early twenties? Is she in love?
If not, advise her to fall in love
with somebody at once. Being
in love is good for the health
of a young woman. It was Dr.
Ivor Beaumont who observed,
"Love stimulates the thyroid and
adrenal glands and makes you
feel on the top of the world. It
makes you hold back your
shoulders and gets your body
working at its best. A girl in
love looks more beautiful, walks
with more assurance and feels
better."
