Curfew Violation Sheriff's
deputies and city police said that
a 14-year-old boy who resides
on a Medford rural route was
placed in the county jail early
Saturday morning on a state
curfew violation charge. He was
arrested by city police.

Innocent Raymond Barn

tral Point, was found innocent
by Judge James Main yesterday
when he appeared in city police
court on a reckless driving ci
tation. According to police re
ports, the car he was driving col
lided with two parked cars at
12th and J sts. on Thursday.
Chicken Taken City police
said that Lawrence Raymond
Phillips, 255 Charlotte Anne rd.,
reported a chicken taken from
his car Friday and that the case
was cleared by arrest of Her
schel Speir, 57, Elko, Nev., on a
vagrancy charge. Phillips told
officers that the dressed chicken
was taken from his car while it
was parked in an alley between
Fourth and Fifth sts. and Front
st. and Central ave. Speir ap
peared in city court yesterday
and was given a 30-day jail sen
tence or the alternative of leav
ing town. Police said Speir elect
ed to leave the city.

Chavez Says West
'Hungry' For Big
Highway Program
Washington (U.P.) Chairman
Dennis Chavez (D-N. M.) said
Saturday a survey by the Sen
ate Public Works committee
showed Western states are "hun
gry" for a big highway building
program, regardless of cost.
He said results of the survey.
conducted by committee staff
members in Colorado, Utah,
Wyoming and New Mexico,
largely determined the scope of
the $21,700,000,000, five - year
program recommended Friday
by a highways subcommittee.
"We found the people out
there not only are very highway
conscious," Chavez said, "but
highway improvements are in
strong demand without reserva
tions on costs."
Subcommittee Chairman Al
bert Gore (D-Tenn.) said mean
while that the full committee
will approve the bill Thursday
and the Senate will pass it the
following week.
The subcommittee rejected the
administration's plan for a S37,
000,000,000 in new highways con
struction in the next 10 years and
approved instead the $21,700,
000,000, five-year plan by a vote
of 6 to 3. It includes $400,000,
000 for roads in national parks
and forests.

Airman First Class in the Air
Force. A 1c Rawstern arrived
in Germany in May, 1954. and
is a member of the First Pilot

tioned near Bitburg, Germany.
He graduated from Medford
high school in June, 1952, and
enlisted in the Air Force in Au
gust,' 1952.

ELLA SPENCER
Mrs. Ella Spencer, 78. of Cres
cent City, Calif., died Friday at
the home of her daughter, Mrs.
Hazel Kincaid. 1232 North Riv
erside ave., Medford. The re
mains were taken by Conger
Morris funeral home to Crescent
City Saturday afternoon for
services and interment.
The deceased was born in
Iowa on May 26, 1876. At the
age of 21, in Nebraska, she was
married to Harry D. Spencer,
who preceded her in death. She
came to the Rogue valley in
1912, and left Medford in 1927
to move to Crescent City.
Survivors include three daugh
ters, Mrs. Kincaid. Mrs. Flora
Trott, Mt. View, Calif.; and Mrs.
Velma Clark, Sacramento,
Calif.; three sons, Harold M..
James A., and Glenn M., all of
Crescent City; a sister, Miss
Flora Smith, and a brother,
Harve Smith, Crescent Cify; 18
grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.

House Approves Bill
On Welfare Assistance
Salem (U.R) The House has
approved a bill reducing the
amount of monthly payments re
quired from relatives to support
needy persons who otherwise
would go on relief.
A section of the bill would add
to the law a provision that "when
any living relative contributes
under this act he may compel
contribution from any other liv
ing relative or relatives liable
under the law."

Graveside funeral services for
Henry F. Meyer, 92, former
Medford resident who died in
Russell, Kan., Thursday, will be
held in Siskiyou Memorial park
Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. with the
Rev. J. T. Dixon of the First
Methodist church officiating. Re
mains will lie in state at Perl
funeral home Tuesday morning.
The deceased was born in
Minden, Germany, in 1863, and
he came to the United States in
1881. On Oct. 17, 1912, in Idaho,
he was married to Amelia Meyer
who died in Medford in April of
1942. Since her death he has
been living with relatives in
Kansas.

Two valley men stationed at
Augsburg, Germany, are now
participating in spring training
exercises held by the 5th infan
try division in southern Bavaria.
They are Pfc. Robert D.
Mincks, son of George A.
Mincks, 2053 College way, Med
ford, and Pvt. Eldon K. Durham,
whose wife and parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Albert L. Durham, live at
134 Church st., Ashland. Private
Durham has been overseas since
last February and is with the
11th regiment of the division.
He Is a 1953 Southern Oregon
college graduate and entered the
army in August, 1954. Private
Mincks Is an ammunition bearer
in Company D with the same
division's 11th regiment. His
wife lives in Indiana.
Keith Raymond Clogston, Box
594, Central Point, enlisted in
the U.S. navy at Portland Thurs
day. He has started his recruit
training at San Diego.
