Baby Foods Galore ,
Help Training Chore
Today's baby is encouraged
from earliest infancy to enjoy a
variety of foods in a wide range
of flavors, textures and colors,
so there should be a lot fewer
"finicky" eaters in the genera
tions ahead.
We choose from more than 60
kinds of baby foods including
juices, fruits, vegetables, meats,
cereals, custards and puddings,
singly and in combinations.
Mothers by the millions daily
give thanks for all those conven
ient little cans and jars of pre
pared baby foods along with the
starting cereals which mean so
much in producing fast-growing
babies with a minimum of par
ental effort.
: We salute the many fine man
ufacturers and processors of
baby foods and junior foods. We
know that back of them and all
that big assortment of baby
foods are years of scientific re
search in laboratories and in
baby clinics. There's even seed
development for improved varie
ties of vegetables, soil analysis,
vitamin and mineral studies by
specialists. There's been long
consultation with alert pedia
tricians; timing of growing crops;
harvest at full bloom of nutri
tion - packed perfection. The
speeding of fruits and vegetables
to busy,, immaculate plants to
preserve that goodness and nu
trition and cstpture it in cans
and glass.
Today's child, growing up.
eats all those good things as a
matter of course; saves later
wear and tear on mother be
cause of lack of food foibles.

Seasonal Abundance of

Health or our Children
The mammoth spotlight is
thrown on May 1, as parents,
educators, nutritionists and
others concern themselves with
the health and welfare of the
nation's children; celebrate Na
tional Child Health Day which
leads right into Baby Week. The
future good health of our na
tion depends very largely on
what our growing boys and girls
are eating today. Western fields,
orchards and water ways pro
vide a wealth of variety in foods
of excellent quality at reasonable
cost the year around.
During the growing years,
quantity as well as properly bal
anced diet is essential. As to
types of food, there are three
general classifications which
should be combined in daily diet.
The "body building" foods that
build and repair muscle and
tissue. In this class are milk,
eggs, meat, fish, cheese, nuts
and certain elements in grain
foods. .
The "protective" foods, rich
in vitamins and minerals that
help fortify the body against
many diseases and encourage
buoyant well-being. Outstanding
in this group are milk and dairy
products, eggs, fruit, vegetables,
whole wheat bread, certain
meats notably liver and kidneys.
The "energy foods, last but
not least, since 85 percent of all
we eat is used by the body for
its energy requirements. In this
category are . bread, cereals,
macaroni, rice, cake, cookies and
many vegetables. The "fuel"
foods which are akin to the
"energy" foods are butter and
all meat and vegetable fats and
oils.
