Saiem (tl.R) An overhaul of
the sales tax bill passed yester
day by the House was indicated
here today when the Senate As
sessment and Taxation Commit
tee went to work in earnest on
the measure.
There were signs that the
House Taxation committee had
been too liberal with exemptions
that would be granted to the
tax, and that the revenue it
would raise would be inade
quate. Charts Ordered
After a preliminary look at
the sales tax last night, the
Senate committee ordered re
searchers to prepare a half-dozen
charts showing where the richest
veins of revenue lay, and how
the House version could be
adapted to estimated needs.
In companion measures to the
sales tax bill, the House had
granted double exemptions to
ease the income tax burden at
the lower pay levels, and had
provided that the sales tax
would not become effective un
til Jan. 1, 1956, if it were ap
proved at the Nov. 3 special
election. That delay of the ef
fective date would result in loss
of several million dollars rev
enue.
Would Void Fag Tax
The House has also provided
that if the sales tax snould. go
into effect, the proposed cigar
ette tax would automatically be
voided. The cigarette tax was
up for final action in the Senate
today.
The Senate committee last
night ordered a bill drafted that
would call a special election
some time this fall on the in
creased income tax rate already
passed, provided the measure is
referred by the voters.
The Senate's plan was to re
solve the income tax issue as
soon as possible, . so that lost
revenue would not force the
bulk of state finances onto ' a
state property tax..
The building program . t ha t
cleared the House yesterday was
referred late in the day to the
Senate Tax Committee., instead
pf to the Ways, and Means Com
mittee 7 which originated the
program.
Eye To Finances
Sen. Rudie Wilhelm (It-Portland),
chairman of the Senate
tax group, promised, that his
committee would not judge the
merits of the building projects
themselves, but instead would
view them with an eye to finan
ces. The committee agreed tenta
tively last night that it would
amend the building program bill
to tie them to available revenue,
Presumably the bulk of the pro
gram would be held in abeyance
if voters attack left the state
without an adequate income tax
or sales tax system to finance
state operations.
Excepted would be the' out

Unless we miss our guess, a lot
of surprised people are going -to
do some new back-of-an-envelope
arithmetic when they see the Buick
price shown here.
Because we know that many folks
still don't realize how little a Buick
really costs that the new transpor
tation charges to the West have
lowered the price even more and ,..
that the dollar difference between
this big Buick Special and the lead'
ing smaller cars has now virtually
disappeared.
Buick Sates Are Soaring A
Naver Before)
But more and more of them are
finding it out. And that's a major
reason why Buick production and
Buick sales are soaring to all-time
. highs today and why Buick again
is outselling all other cars, regard' .
less of price range, except two of the
well-known smaller cars.
Big reason, too, for this soaring

popularity is Buick's full line of
automobiles, giving you a choice in
any price class the rock-bottom-priced

Century, the supremely spacious
Super, and the custom-built

But above all, more and more
people are discovering that the
price yoi3 pay for a Buick buys more
sheer automobile than the same
money buys elsewhere.
More advanced styling, more deep
down comfort, more pure power
thrill, more ride steadiness and
handling ease and solidity of
structure. .
More spectacular performance,
too, from the modest extra. cost of
Buick's automatic transmission.
