Truman Refers to Attorney General as "lern lungler' in Ghieago Talk
Ex-President
Departs From
Prepared Text
: Chicago U.R) Former Presi
dent Harry S. Truman followed
up on an address about , civil
rights last night by referring to
Atty. Gen. Herbert Brownell
Jr., without mentioning him by
name, as a "dern bungler," the
Chicago Sun-Times reported.
: Mr. Truman previously had
departed from the text of his
prepared address to say that it
was the attorney general s duty
to "preserve the Bill of Rights
as well as protect the rights of
the people."
'Dern Bungler
; The former President spoke
before the Chicago Decalogue
Society of Lawyers, which pre
sented him -its 1954 Award of
Merit, and on the way out of a
hotel with Justice William O.
Douglas of the Supreme Court,
he started to make some refer
ence to his "blowing up," then
added "It's just that we've got
such a dern bungler in the at
torney general's office."
, In a speech ' on civil rights,
Mr. Truman said "It is the duty
of the attorney general of . the
united States, who has sworn
just as I did when I took the
oath of office, to preserve the
Bill of Rights as well as to pro
tect the rights of the people.
Protection for Citizens
"The Bill of Rights is just as
important as the Constitution
itself."
Mr. Truman made the off the
cuff remarks immediately after
saying "recent history has dem
onstrated ... that unless citi
zens have rights against - the
government, no one can be safe
or secure."
Mr.- Truman'i comment cap
ped a busy day in Chicago in
which he:
1. Announced that Adlai E.
Stevenson is his candidate for
the 1956 presidential nomination
and voiced praise for Tennes
see's young governor, Frank
Clement.
2. . Said the Democrats "can
lick anyone who runs on the
Republican ticket," including
President Eisenhower.
3. Proposed an investigation
of the American press by "an
unbiased and qualified organiza
tion, adding "You know I have
been having a little argument
with the press, an apparent ref-
xerence to his recent charges of

similar but contends that the
anti-trust act violation occurred
during the same period of time
in concert with the ANPA's own
members.
Disclosure of the government's
forthcoming action was made to
members at the ANPA's 69th
annual convention at the Waldorf-Astoria

It was said that last week a
committee representing the AN

the association in the U.S. Dis
