'Survival Town' Granted Reprieve By Adverse Winds

The Atomic Energy commission
called off today's scheduled
atomic blast 45 minutes before
hot time becausa of adverse
winds. -
The AEC postponed . the test
for another 24 hours, until
Thursday morning.
This created a king-sizt trans
portation and hotel reservation
headache, since some 4,000 ob
servers, civil defense workers
end newsmen already were on
the site awaiting the blast.
Long Caravans
They would have to ba re
turned to Las Vegas in the long
caravans of buses and automo
biles, a two-hour trip. And once
there they would for the second
time begin the work of setting
forward their hotel and trans
portation reservations prior to
their return to their homes all
over the country.
The Las Vegas area and the
test site here, 75 miles north
west of Las Vegas, have been the
target of a severe windstorm for
the past 24 hours. But winds
had tapered off from 80-mile
gust velocity to 25 miles per
hour and meteorologists forecast
a possible drop to 12 miles per
hour by shot time, scheduled for
4:15 a.m. (PST). With that fore
cast, the AEC went ahead with
its preparations.
Fate Delayed
Thus the fata of "Survival
town, U.S.A." was held in abey
ance another 24 hours at least.

Marauding Eagle Attacks Youth; Terrifies Woman
Spokana r(U.R) A terrified
woman told game department of
ficials today a marauding eagla
had attacked her 14-year-old son
and "has us so scared wa don't
dara go outdoors."
Mrs. P. A. McKernan said the
huge bird had raided her farm
at Colbert twice a day for about
a year and that her son, Pat, had
fought with it three times.
His latest battle was Friday
morning when the eagle "came
out of nowhere" and dug his
long, razor sharp talons into the
family's pet collie dog. The dog
howled in pain and the .boy ran
to help it.
"Pat grabbed the eagle with
his hands but it got away, circled
and dropped down on him like a
shot," she told Game Supervisor
Bob Henstreet.
"Its wings hit tha boy on the
back of his head and knocked
him down, dazed," she said.
"Then, when he was down, the
