William Auel Takes
Cattle Association

rd., Medford has been appoint
ed field secretary, of the Ore
gon All-Jersey association, now
engaged in a campaign to
strengthen its milk marketing
arrangements throughout the
state.
Auel assumed his new duties
last month after resigning from
his post as manager of the South
ern Oregon Milk Producers lea
gue, which he held during the
past four years.
-His record in developing a
wider distribution plan for the
milk producers in this section,
together with his familiarity
with the many problems of the
dairy industry at this time, were
responsible for his selection to
take charge of the campaign for
this state wide association, it
was announced.
"His duties include organiza
tion and milk control work as
well as pooling the milk for this
large group," according to a re
cent article in the Oregon Jersey
Review. ... ' j
"The Board realized in Febru
ary that increasing shipments
and the annual flush period
would make necessafry some
form of arrangement comparable
to the former quota system.
"There being a general dislike
of the term 'quota' however, a
form of marketing agreement
was prepared and William Auel,
recently engaged as field secre
tary with wide experience in
such matters, was given the as
signment of setting up the bot
tle and can figures for all ship
pers, the announcement ex
plains. '
Auel will retain his home in
Medford although his duties
necessitate spending much of his
time in other parts of the state

Railroad Safety
Awards Presented
Washington (U.R) Half a
century ago a 2V2-year-old Ne
braska boy concluded it was time
to i see the world, so he shoul
dered his sand box shovel and lit
out.
Presently he came upon a
main-line railroad and decided
that the ties between the tracks
would make a swell foundation
for a rock castle.
He was busy with his con
struction job when a freight
train came roaring into view.
The engineer applied the brakes.
The alert fireman scrambled to
the engine pilot, leaned over and
scooped the child clear just as
the locomotive rumbled over the
spot.
The boy was unhurt, but the
fireman, losing his grip, fell be
neath the train. Both arms were
broken and one foot was crushed
so badly it had to be amputated.
Later, that fireman was pre
sented the Presidential Medal of
Honor by Theodore Rooseveit.
Thus he became the first recipi
ent of the railroad safety award
established by act of Congress in
1905 "to promote the security of
travel upon railroads."
George H. PoelL the heroic
fireman of the St. Joseph &
Grand Island Railway, was the
first among 56 trainmen to be so
honored.
Almost every type of railroad
worker is represented in the
honor list, but the largest num
ber of citations have been be
stowed on train service em
ployees. Thirty-seven of the total
saved persons who for some rea
son or another showed up in the
path of oncoming trains.
Open House Slated
At New Talent High
Talent -Seven classrooms, a
library, a shop, girl's lounge,
health room and offices in the
new Talent High school will be
open to the public starting at
7:30 p.m. May 27, school offic
ials announced yesterday.
Modern color dynamics have
been used on the interior, and
the exterior will : be painted a
light green after receiving a
sand finish. Landscaping of the
grounds'will be done in the near
future with the cooperation of
the Talent Garden club. ;
