Student Drivers Get

school students who pass a course
in driver education are now en
titled to a 10 per cent reduction
in their auto insurance, the Na
tional Bureau of Casualty Under
writers has announced. The re
duction is effective in 39 states
and the District of Columbia.
"Driver education courses of
fered by 10,000 of the nation's
high schools are paying divi
dends," said Willaim G. Carr, ex
ecutive secretary of the National
Education Association.
"Insurance companies, schools
and the public need assurance
that a minimum program of in
struction is being offered in high
school driver education. The re
cently announced plan (10 per
cent reduction) indicates that
preferred rates will be allowed
graduates . . '. where the state
department of education certifies
that at least 30 hours of class
room instruction and six hours
of driving time were given."
Only about 25 per cent of eligi
ble high school students are re
ceiving both classroom and prac
tice driving in 7,000 high schools.
Another 25 per cent receive only
classroom instruction in 3,000
high schools. '
"This means that 50 per cent,
about 1,000,000 students, come
of licensable age every year with
out any driver education," Carr
stressed.
Since 1933, when a few high
schools started to teach driver
education, it has helped to re
duce the number of deaths per
100,000,000 miles of vehicle
travel, from' 15.6 in 1933 to 7.1
in 1953. -
"If we don't pay now to equip
our boys and girls with safe driv
ing through high school courses,
we will pay later for countless
accidents," Carr added.

tonsillectomy is fatal to many
victims in the course of a year.
If this operation were really
necessary or if it were more ef
fective than the minor opera
tion, tonsillotomy, for enlarged
tonsils in children one might not
feel duty bound to talk about it
here. '
Having studied the question
intensively for many years, with
due regard for mortality rates,
I am convinced that the more
or less blind dissection of the
throat known as tonsillectomy
does nothing for the child with
enlarged (hypertrophic) tonsils
that tonsillotomy won't do as
well.
Tonsillotomy means clipping,
slicing off the obstructing por
tion of tonsil, which is as quickly
over and attended with no great
er danger than attends extraction
of a tooth.
For years I have contended
that there is no good reason why
an operator should attempt to
"get every bit of tonsil tissue"
when operating for enlarged
