! the Cincinnati Redlegs admits
that "the closer I can come the
worse it will get."
You might think that the pres
sure would be telling on "Big
Klu" right now. Because he led
the majors in home runs last sea
son with 49 and has been given
the green light to "swing away"
this season.
But Mister Muscles holds that
it all combines to help instead
of hinder. .
"I've proved to myself now
that I can do it," he explains
carefully. "When you're fighting
to reach the top, say in the mat
ter of hitting home runsi you
have a tendency to tighten up.
When'you try too hard you over
swing and the first thing you
know you've lost your timing."
( Ted's system for battling this
pressure is "just to swing and
let the home runs take care of
themselves."
"They'll come If you just meet
the ball,". Kluszewski asserted.
I've proved this by hitting at
least three home runs this season
on pitches which had me com
pletely fooled. In those cases, I
just managed . to meet the ball
without overswinging and the
ball took a long trip."
They figure to "take a long
trip" when Kluszewski meets
them squarely. Regarded as the
most powerful man in baseball,
the 6-foot ,2-inch,. 23 5-pound in
fielder is a man of whom" it is
said "even his sweat has mus
cles." - -
That power made him an All
Big Ten end at Indiana in 1945,
the year the late Bo McMillin's
"Po Lil Boys" won the confer
ence grid crown. It also helped
him to a pair of minor league
batting championships his first
two seasons in organized base
ball. In 1946 at Columbia he led
the Sally League with .352 and
in 1947 at Memphis he paced the
Southern Association with .377.
Yet it wasn't until last season,
his eighth in the majors, that
those muscles really paid off. He
compiled his highest big league
batting average with a .326 mark
as he led the majors in home
runs and in runs batted in with
141.
"But I figure . I'll hit more
home runs by not thinking of
them," he revealed. "I'm just
swinging the bat.
"Yet," Kluszewski smiles, "if
I do get close to Ruth's record
I know the closer I get the
tougher it will be."

Elks To Protect
All-Star Ruling
By Idaho Group
Ontario, Ore. (U.R) Ontario
Elks will meet here tonight to
protest an Idaho High .School
Interscholastic Activities ' asso
ciation ruling that could sound
the death knell of the annual
all-star football classic here.
The association's board . of
limiting participation by Idaho
schools, coaches, school officials
and employees in all-star con
tests unless those contests have
been approved by the board of
control.
Specifically Armed
Jerry Cammann, Vale High
school athletic director, said the
rule was. aimed specifically at
the annual Elks classic here,
since m it was the only all-star
contest in which Idaho teams
played.
The game, which raises funds
for Oregon and Idaho Elks chari
ties, draws players from the
Snake river and Boise river val
leys in Oregon and Idaho. '
Cammann said that unless
new means of recruiting Idaho
prep players, the ruling may
mean the end of the Ontario all
star game, which normally is
played in August.

Report Awaited
From Larsen on
Italy Incident
New York (U.R) The U.S.
Lawn Tennis Association was
waiting today for an official
report from Italy on the "ball
boy incident" that has re
sulted in the suspension of for
mer National champion Art
Larsen of San Leandro, Calif.
The impetuous Larsen,
southpaw who held the U.S.
title in 1950 and currently is
ranked fourth nationally, re
portedly slammed a ball at an
Italian ball boy during a tour
nament at Genoa on Saturday.
The ball struck the boy in
the face and he left the court
crying as the crowd booed
Larsen loudly.
Larsen finished runner-up
in the tournament, bowing to
Italian champion Fausto Gar--dini
in Monday's final round,
6-4, 8-6, 6-2. The suspension
placed on him Monday by the
USLTA prevents him, at least
temporarily, from taking part
in any more European tournaments.
