Of Trip To South Pole With Adm. Byrd
Editor's Note: Admiral Richard E.
Bvrd has announced he will make an
other trip to the South Pole this year.
The following expert analysis of the
South Polar situation is by a corres
pondent who was with Byrd at Little
America In the 1946-47 expedition.

New York (U.P.) All right, all
right. I went on the last one and
you ain't gonna get me to go on
this one.-
I don't say anything about
your going on this one. I just
said you would give an expert
analysis. Ed.
. What do you mean, expert
analysis? You know I practically
never got out of my sleeping
bag down there. What do I know
about the South Pole? .
Well, just tell us the biggest
problems you faced on the An
arctic continent. Ed.
There are two biggest prob
lems, Beards and runny noses.
Hmmm. Ed. ,
Everybody grows a beard
when he first goes to the Antarc
tic. You talk like going to the
Antarctic is something people do
every day. You know that fewer
than 1000 persons have set foot
on that continent in all history.
Ed.
Who's telling this story, me or
you? Where was I?
Growing a beard. Ed. V
Oh, yes. It's very inadvisable
to grow a beard when you go
to the Antarctic because your
breath freezes into it and pretty
soon it's a solid cake of ice. This
Nurse's Killer
Sought by Police
Brookline, Mass. U.R) Po
lice today searched for a cunning
killer in the flaming couch mur
der of a pretty nurse.
Six friends of Elizabeth M.
(Betty) Dose, 28, were given lie
detector and skin tests by police
over the week end, but all were
released. '
Miss Dose was believed to be
a fire victim when firemen
dragged her flimsily clad body
from a blaz" couch believed to
have been ignited by a dropped
cigarette. But the autopsy was
ordered when it was established
that the victim never smoked.
Police believe the slayer was
known to the victim.
Dr. Thomas P. Kendrick, med
ical examiner, said the autopsy
revealed the pretty victim had
been clubbed by an assailant
who tried to cover his crime by
setting the couch ablaze.
Repeated blows caused a mas
sive hemorrhage, but she appar
ently died of suffocration, Ken
drick said. The victim had three
jagged wounds in her head.
Police established the time of
death somewhere between 2 a.m.
and 6 a.m. Saturday. They
planned to" continue questioning
today of all the men she was
known to have dated in the past
month.

is no kidding. Then, when you
go inside your tent to eat, it
thaws into your coffee- or
soup.: Also, it drips up your
sleeve , when you're eating.
The best thing to have is about
two or three days growth of stub
ble on your; face. That seems to
fend off some of the cold with
out the inconvenienqe of a full
blown beard. Now, as for the
runny noses you were asking me
about .
I was asking you? Ed.
You said you wanted the big
gest problems. In that tempera
ture, noses are always running.
We had one guy, a driver of a
tracked vehicle on a long trail
party, who decided to smoke. He
paused, with the cigarette half
way to his mouth, to ask for a
match. By the time he got the
match, the cigarette was sus
pended in mid-air, attached to
his nose by an icicle a foot long.
Didn't Admiral Byrd tell you
anything about the Antarctic?
Give you some inside dope? Ed.

Into Picnic; Three
Juveniles Arrested
Santa Rosa, Calif. (U.R)
Three youths were held today on
charges of possessing dynamite
after one of them admitted toss
ing a stick of explosive into a
family picnic.
Quick action on the part of
Evan Harris, 36-year-old account
ant at the University of Califor
nia, saved the lives of four adults
and four children. He picked up
the dynamite and threw it aside,
where it went off with a shatter
ing blast.
No One Injured
None of the picknickers. was
injured.

there. I just wanted to see what
kind of a noise it would make."
, The incident took place at
Salt Point, a mile north of Fort
Ross on the Sonoma county coast
yesterday. .
"They could have been blown
to bists by the dynamite," Cook

Sheppard Evidence
Scheduled in Court
Cleveland, O. 4J.PJ Dr. Sam
uel H. Sheppard, the boy-faced
osteopath convicted of murder
ing his wife, goes to court again
this week in an effort to prove
his innocence.
Common Pleas Judge Edward
Blythin, who conducted the
marathon trial that ended in Dr.
Sam's ' conviction of second-degree
murder, granted defense
attorneys a hearing for Wednes
day to prove their claims that
"newly- discovered evidence"
points to someone else's guilt.
The evidence was based on the
findings of Dr.- Paul Kirk, a
University of California profes
sor who has turned his hobby of
criminology into a $100 a day
business.
Dr. Sam expected to attend
the hearing.
My tent was right next to his
tent. He told me some pretty
good jokes. Seems that once 'two
Arctic terns a male and a fe
male met at the equator. Those
are birds that fly from pole to
pole. Well, the male didn't hear
from her for several weeks after
ward. Then he got a telegram
from her saying, "Am with bird
at the South Pole."
And so. . . . ? Ed
Yes. Well, that's one of the
problems we explorers encoun
ter. Telling jokes to people who
think puns are for the Byrds.
Russians Believed
Ahead of America
On Guided Missiles
Washington (U.R) Sen.
Stuart Symington (D-Mo.) says
he is "certain" Russia is "far
ahead" of the United States in
development of the interconti
nental ballistics missile although
senators have been told other
wise ,
He said yesterday that sen
ators have been given "assur
ances" that this country is far
ther ahead than Russiaon what
he called "the ultimate wea
pon." Missiles Said Lacking
But, Symington said he is cer
tain the Russians are "far
ahead" of this - country in de
velopment of the destructive
weapon which can be fired over
oceans at an incredible speed
and a high degree of accuracy.
"We've got the program but
we have no missiles," he said.
'They are years away. It should
be handled on a 24-hour day,
seven-day week basis." ;f
Symington, a member of the
Senate Armed Services Commit
tee, was sharply critical of De
fense Secretary Charles E. Wil
son's new secrecy order. He also
criticized what he called secur
ity "leaks" by the administra
tion and Republican party.
Compered To Goebbels
He compared Wilson's latest
secrecy order to the writings of
one-time Nazi propaganda chief
Joseph Goebbels. "I don't see
any difference except the date,"
he said.
Wilson's order forbids disclo
sure of information unless it is
in accordance with Pentagon
policy, constructive, timely and
"proper," Symington said.
He added that a recent pam
phlet on military matters put
out by the GOP National Com
mittee was reported to have 12
"security leaks."

Around Hollywood
By ALINE MOSBY
United Press Correspondent
Hollywood (U.R) Pier An
geli decided today she has two
comforting thoughts from her re
cent plane ac
cident: She
feels more
"grown up"
and thankful
she has a hus
band to croon
to her while
she lays in
pain.
The Italian
Aline Mosby film actress is
recuperating at home from the
mishap that nearly cost her a
baby and kept her in the hos
pital for two months.
The expectant mother can't
reveal details of the accident
because of possible lawsuits. But
rough air while she was in the
ladies' room of the plane jounced
her so severely she suffered a
broken pelvis, sprained ankle
and a gash that left a small scar
at the corner of her eye.
Vic Wonderful
"t feel more grown-up now,"
she said thoughtfully. "Any ex
perience like that helps you ma
ture. And Vic was the most
wonderful person to me."
Pier, her black hair cut short,
sat on the pink bed in her bed
room at her mother's home
where she and bridegroom Vic
Damone are living until they
find their own house. She wore
a blue and white maternity dress
and her diamond wedding ring
the size of a small headlight.
She usually is breathless and
girlish, but today she was sub
dued. "I was terrified at the hos
pital," she said. "I couldn't say
a word. I was in a traction splint
and couldn't read or write be
cause of terrible headaches. The
doctor did not want me to cry
for fear of losing the baby. ' '
"Day by day for five weeks
we didn't know if I would keep
the baby. A week ago I finally
felt the baby. It was the most
wonderful thing in my life."
Apparently young love can do
anything. Damone, his bride
beamed, "would do silly things
to make me laugh and make the
days pass, such, as banging his
head on the door."
! "He would roll on the floor
and somersault. He fed me and
brought gifts every day," she
said blissfully.
This gift trend continues. Da
mone interrupted our interview
to rush in with a Pekingese pup
for his dark-eyed bride.
"He brought me his new roc
ords. He sang to me," Pier con
tinued. "Once he put on his
nightclub act for me and three
nurses. When I would scream
from the pain in my legs he
would massage them.
"He kept telling me, 'Just
think. God has been so good to
us. We have the baby and you
will keep it.' He made me re
peat that after him."
Thousands of letters poured In
from around the country. One
Los Angeles school sent a giant
get-well card signed by hun
dreds of pupils. ,
"People sent Rosaries, medals
and books about the saints," Pier
said. "I've never gotten so many
letters. Even people in Holly
wood I don't know, such as Jane
Wyman, wrote me."
-Pier now is learning to walk
on crutches. She hopes to be
back in movies after the baby
arrives in August.
De Gaulle Movement
Defeated in France
Paris U.R) French voters
apparently doomed the postwar
political movement of Gen.
Charles de Gaulle, final returns
from provincial elections showed
today.
Everyone, including the gov
ernment coalition, and the left
wing political parties, gained at
the cost of the de Gaulle move
ment. The left wing gains were
slightly more than those of the
government coalition.
' The Social Democratic party,
holdover of de Gaulle's postwar
rally of the French people, lost
79 seats, more than half of those
they held in the general coun
cils of the French departments.
