400 B.C. that "sailing on the sea
shows that motion disorders the
body" the first recorded de
scription of sea-sickness.
If you have ever been seasick
you may believe the legend that
Cicero fleeing by sea from the
decapitation decreed by Mark
Anthony went back and sub
mitted to beheading rather than
suffer further ... I suppose you
may as well make it a good one
while you're at it. Now it will be
obvious that I have never been
seasick.
Well, no, maybe it wasn't sea
sickness, but when you are quite
finished describing your motion
sickness, whether it is brought
on by ship, plane, train, bus or
automobile travel, just stand
back and let me tell you about
my vertigo.
Vertigo, according to the med
ical dictionary, is a sensation as
li tne external world were re
volving around you.
One fine morning I got up, did
my six rolls and half doz. move
ments of the Last Brady Sym
phony as usual the symphony
is the group of setting-up exer
cises described and illustrated in
Little Lesson No. 6, for which

to dress. Suddenly everything
was revolving around me and I
sprawled on the floor, all fours
extended to prevent falling off

The only vertigo I had ever ex
perience lasted perhaps half a
minute. Presently it was over, I
resumed dressing, and I have ex
perienced no disturbance since,
although I have done some 25,

For years I have recommended
the use of effervescent magne
sium citrate solution (pleasant
saline laxative) and small doses
of atropine sulfate before sail
ing and in the first day or two of
the voyage, as the best preventive
against seasickness.
In the course of the last war
a new seasickness remedy was in
troduced dimenhydrinate tab
lets, 100 mg. It bears the trade
mark "Dramamine." It gives fair
ly good results m many cases,
but had some unpleasant effects
in others. It can be obtafned only
on prescription. -

"sympathetic consideration" to a
proposed visit to Iowa of Russian
farmers, it has been learned
here.
If the visit is approved, the
American strategy could explode
