Fire Truck Involved
In Portland Mishap
Portland (U.R) A fire
truck and a car collided here
Friday and fire department Capt.
Noel Lawrence was hospitalized
with possible head and back in
juries. .The car was nearly demol
ished. The driver, Donald L.
Hyde, 23, Portland, was not
hurt.
The fire truck was rushing to
answer a fire call which turned
out to be false. , " -

Salem (U.R) A bill to
abolish the Battleship Oregon
commission was approved Satur
day by the Joint Ways and
Means committee and sent to
the House for aetion. The mea
sure included a $3000 appropria
tion of the commission's affairs
in Portland, including closure of
its museum.

who finds a child's tonsils en
larged at this time of year can
foretell that
the tonsils will
not shrink to
"normal" size
by the end 'of
summer if the
child gets a fair
break -in' the
way of . outdoor
play for hours
every day.

"get every bit of tonsil" doesn't
always know just what he is
getting, for he must work more
or less blindly because of the
blood covered field.
Examination of what was re
moved in .1,000 tonsillectomies
showed, besides tonsil and ade
noid Qymphoid) tissue, portions
of throat muscle in several in
stances. Good surgeons and
throat specialists had performed
the operations and a pathologist
of standing made the microscopic
examinations. The revealing re
port, which appeared in JAMA,
should make any person who
uses his or her voice profession
ally hesitate to submit to tonsil
lectomy. After all, it is understandable
that even a good surgeon, dissect
ing away in a gory field, should
occasionally remove a piece of
throat muscle in his eagerness to
"get every bit of tonsil."
If you think about the tonsil
problem it is important to dis
tinguish as clearly as possible in
fected tonsils from enlarged ton
sils.' V ':''
; The tonsils of growing chil
dren are usually enlarged in the
winter and spring, if the children
are cooped up indoors most of
the time or too much bundled up
when they are permitted to play
outdoors. Provided tonsil snatch
ers do not catch the children at
the season when their tonsils are
enlarged, generally the tonsils
will shrink to their normal sum
mer size before school opens next
autumn.-. .
Some children, .with enlarged
tonsils, have repeated feverish
illnesses through the winte sea
son, with or without soreness of
the throat. "Colds." Some doc-
tors, consulted about these re
curring illnesses, decide the "bad
tonsils are responsible and arbi
trarily sentence the child to ton
sillectomy. Oh, of course the doctors do
not tell parents honestly that
they are just guessing that re
moval of the tonsils may do some
good. They merely opine that the
child will probably continue hav
ing "colds", until those bad ton
sils are taken out. That's enough
to get tfie consent of the parents.
In 2,200 Rochester, N. Y.,
school children who were sub
jected to tonsillectomy, out of
4,400 for whom the operation
was advised by physicians, 22
per cent were still subject to re
peated "colds" ten years later.
Of the other 2,200 children, who
were not subjected to the oper
ation the doctors had advised, 31
per cent were still subject to re
peated "colds" ten years later.
Does the difference justify sub
jecting children to this danger
ous major operation? I think not.

Tunisia have reached a stop-gap
agreement on the most import
ant points of an accord to give
home rule to Tunisia and lay the
foundation for pacifying turbu
lent North Africa.
The agreement was reached
by French Premier Edgar Faure
and Tunisian Premier Tahar Ben
Ammar after eight months of
bargaining on the program first
begun by former Premier Pierre
Mendes-France and which led to
his downfall. v
The agreement still has to be
approved by the National As
sembly and by the Bey of Tu
nis, Sidi Mohammed El Tmin.
