district president of the Women's
Relief corps of the auxiliary to
the GAR at the 20th annual dis
trict convention April 16 at Cen
tral Point. William H. Harrison
post auxiliary was the host
group and the meeting was held
at the American Legion hall.
Mrs. Margaret A. Wilson is
the retiring president. She pre
sided for the sessions, and in
troduced the state department
president, Mrs. Florence Wick,
and the state department in
spector, Mrs. Dorothy Kamrath
of Portland.
Other corps represented were
the Burnside chapter of Ashland,
and the General Logan chapter
at Grants Pass.

give him a chance to take part in
family decisions, says Viola
Hunt, family life specialist at the
University of Wisconsin.
She says some families are too
strict with their children, while
others exercise too little control.
One system is just as bad as the
other, Miss Hunt says,
v Work usually gets done quick
ly when the parents say sharply,
"do this," but the child" is likely
either to become rebellious or
quiet and withdrawn.
She says youngsters want to
become independent as fast as
they can, but they still depend
on their parents to apply some
discipline.
Miss Hunt urges parents to
give children some choice in
spending money, choosing
clothes, making friends and de
ciding on rules.
She says democratic family
living doesn't always work, but
studies show that teen-agers
from these families have fewer
school and community problems.

Plans Breakfast
On Mothers' Day
Shady Cove A breakfast at
the Veterans of Foreign Wars
hall on Mothers' day, May 8,
was planned by auxiliary mem
bers of the Steelhead post April
15 when they met at the home
of their president, Mrs. Frank
Busch.
The breakfast will be served
from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Next meeting of the post and
auxiliary will be May 6 and it
was announced that elections
will be held.
Another announcement con
cerned a district meeting which
will be held May 15 at Brook
ings Avhen a potluck noon din
ner will be served. The meeting
is to convene at 1:30 p.m.
A report made by the hospi
tal chairman, Mrs. Jim Cassal,
was read 'by Mrs. Birch, Mrs.
Cassal . being unable to attend
because of illness. The report
included the information that
Mrs. Ed Learning, Mr. and Mrs.
Cassal, Mrs. Francis Miller, Mrs.
Russ Stell, Mrs. Johnny Jones
and Mrs. Ellen Schaubel had
visited the Camp White domi
ciliary, for an Easter ward rec
reation during which games and
music were provided. Women
from the Shady Cove auxiliary
had furnished Easter favors.
Mrs. Gene House, Mrs. James
Hopkins and Mrs. Olie Horn
seth served refreshments.
League To Hold
Summer Workshop
Grants Pass Plans are being
made by the Grants Pass Art
league for its third annual sum
mer . workshop. Classes . in
sculpture, silk-screening and
walercolor besides the usual
schedule of beginning and ad
vanced oil painting are planned.
Instructors will be the em
inent Louis Bunce, who has in
structed during the . 1953 and
1954 classes, and Manuel Iz
quierdo. both instructors at the
Portland Museum of Art. There
will be both morning and eve
ning classes.
Anyone interested may con

the Art league, by April 25.

unit meeting is set for Friday,

The lesson will be "Simple.

Christlieb and Mrs. George Large
as demonstration leaders. A pot
luck luncheon will be served.
It is stated that the meeting
will begin 'promptly at 11 a. m.
and that election of officers and
practice for the festival will be
held.
