changed much across the many
years.
He demon
strated during
his visit to our
town that he is
the same salty
little fighter he
always , has
been.
I'll never for
get the first
time I met Har
ry S. Truman.
It was in Ca-
ruthersville, Mo., shortly after he
became President.
I had been in nearby Blythe
ville. Ark., covering a national
cotton picking contest when I
had a wire from the boss in New
York. It said to run over to
give Merriman Smith, our White
House man, a leg-up on covering
our new leader.
Homegrown Newsmen
Caruthersville, to honor a na
tive Missourian, was going all
out at its county fair, making
the last day of the event "Harry
Truman Day."
Mr. Truman and his official
party arrived the night before
and the new chief, before he was
to have dinner with the church
ladies in the little inn, expressed
a desire to meet the homegrown
newsmen. Since I was working
out of St. Louis at the time, I was
considered homegrown.
We gathered in a tiny room
and waited. Pretty soon there
was a sharp rap at the door, and
in walked the President of the
United States. He was coatless
and tieless, and his neck was
showing three unbuttoned but
stood up at attention and chor
used: '
"Hello. Mr. President."

The little man from Missouri
smiled.
"If you clowns don't sit down,
I'm getting out of here," he said.
That relieved us.
Then there began an around-the-room
telling of jokes and
small talk. Mr. Truman took his
turn.
Later, after the fine dinner,
the church ladies, proud as punch
at the present company, began to
chorus for the President to work
a little something out of the old
upright piano. The chief wheeled
around and cut loose with the
"Missouri Waltz," the ladies
chiming in, vocally, country

PHANTOM THYMUS STATE
The favorite hobby" or sport of
a husky college freshman aged
19 is mountain climbing. It
seems that the
more difficult
and dangerous
the climb the
better he likes
it.
Oddly
enough, when
he was a baby
he would be
come frighten
ed if you toss-

lifted him high, in the play ba
bies usually like. Also the baby
had what the doctors called en
larged thymus gland. The diag
nosis was confirmed, the doctors
said, by X-ray.
The baby breathed noisily,
both inspiration and expiration,
all the time, and occasionally
had a spell of difficult breathing
resembling asthma.
Extension ot the neck aggrav
ated the breathing difficulty;
flexion or bending the neck re
lieved it.
Along with the breathing diffi
culty the baby sometimes look
ed cyanotic, bluish or livid, in
stead of the warm pink one ex
pects in a baby.
Temper brought on or aggrav
ated all these symptoms.
Up to this point the medical
story seems justified for the sake
of reassuring anxious parents.
But we can't go one step beyond

nest Adams received word this
week of the death of her mother,
Mrs. J. W. Dasef of Stanton,
Mich.
Marion Cummins, 85, passed
away April 19 here at the home
of his daughter, Mrs. Alfred
Spearin, after a long illness. He
is survived by his wife, Mattie
and another daughter, Mrs. Le
land Evans, Ft. Jones, two sons,
Carl F. and Robert L. of Horn
brook and numerous other rela
tives. Funeral services will be
held Friday, April 22, at 2 p.m.
at Girdner's chapel at Yreka.
Burial will be in the Hornbrook
cemetery.

were dinner guests of Mr. : and
Mrs. Tony Labote of Yreka, April
15.

holding meetings once a week at
the park with Mrs. Thomas Watt
as their new den mother. Mrs.

this week with her daughter and
son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred
King of Alameda, Calif.

When the baby was about
three years old he fell into the
hands of a group who passed him
around for all the "tests" the
various members could contrive
and they finally decided to
operate not on the thymus, but
on what they diagnosed as ade
noid hypertrophy.
I was opposed to this, but a
prophet hath no honor in his
own country. The child survived
the operation, but that is all.
Believe it or not, about ten
years later, in a well meant en
deavor to correct the boy's asth
matic tendency, another group
attempted to remove adenoids
which were not there. This time
an anesthesiologist, a hematolo
gist, and allergist and an ORL
(ear, nose and throat specialist)
combined their talents, and the
boy suffered severe hemmorh
age. But again the crude sur
gery made ho notable difference
in the boy's asthmatic tendency.
The original diagnosis of en
larged thymus gland seemed to
answer the classical medical
textbook description of a condi
tion known as "status lymphati
cus" or "status thymicolympha
ticus." The X-ray film seemed
to confirm this phony diagnosis
I say phony now, because we
know more about it than we did
then.

Among other treatments the
boy received was a series of ex
posures of the upper part of
breastbone area to X-ray. The
X-ray specialists, enthusiastical
ly playing the guessing game
with all the other specialists,
thought such treatment would re
duce the size of the thymus
gland. Sure enough, in the course
of a few months X-ray films
showed gradual reduction in the
size of the gland.
But all this to-do about en
larged thymus gland and "status
thymicolymphaticus," in the
opinion of medical authorities to
day, was just a bad case of syn
thetic ants in the medical pants.
Routine X-ray films of the thy
mus area of newborn infants in
a large hospital showed enlarged
thymus in many perfectly
healthy babies.-
A study of the subject by A.
Graeme Mitchell, M.D. and Josef
Warkany led to the conclusion
that
"If such a condtion as status
thymicolymphaticus exists . . .
there is no justification for the
belief that radiologic" (X-ray)
"treatment, extirpation of the
thymus or edministration of
thymus extracts would have
prevented. . ."

doctors said.
