Agricultural Agent Includes President

Zettle doesn't get phone calls
from the busy chief executive

Feaster, caretaker of the Eisen
hower farm, or Gen. Arthur
Nevins, who is helping the Presi
dent get into the farming busi
ness. "It may be a question of
what fertilizer you should use
for a certain crop or what corn
variety, just the ordinary things
that any farmer would call for,"
says the 32-year-old graduate
of Penn State University's agri
cultural college.
In Transition Stage
Zettle has visited the Eisen
hower farm "about half a dozen
times" and has answered numer
ous phone queries. He said the
Eisenhower staff needs about
the same amount of advice as
any other farmer.
"They've been more or less in
the transition stage out there,"
he said. "Originally they had a
dairy herd and now they're
switching over to beef.
"We've advised them on such
matters as remodeling buildings
and fences to accommodate the
herd, and building pastures and
growing a hay crop."
One of Zettle's assignments
involved testing soil samples in
his basement laboratory.
Good Beef Soil
"We checked a sample for
lime requirement,'' he said.
"This is important to the soil
fertility program. They're con
centrating on proper fertilizers,
timing and moving over to more
grassland in the rotation. That
fits into their type of farming."
In Zettle's opinion, the 189
acre Eisenhower place four
miles outside Gettysburg " is "a
good livestock farm."
"It's not on some of the best
soil in the country, nor on the
worst. It has the type of soil that
fits in well in a livestock pro
gram," he said.
Zettle said other farmers in
Adams county are proud to have
the President among them. As
for his own feelings:
"You don't have an oppor
tunity every day of performing
a personal service for the Presi
dent of the United States." - '
