Pilot Who Bailed Out

P. Smith, who bailed out of his
F-86D sabrejet fighter early yes
terday when it developed trou
ble, was found today in rugged
country 10 miles north of Lake
Roosevelt.
Two airmen in a helicopter
spotted the flyer at 6 a.m. about
10 miles north of Miles, a small
town at the confluence of the
SDokane and Columbia rivers
where his plane crashed to earth
about 9 a.m. yesterday.
The 'copter pilots said Smith
appeared to be in good condition
despite his long stay in the cold.
He was standing beside his para
chute and had built a fire to keep
him warm during the night, they

Is forecast for Pacific Northwest in
Israel Police Campaign
Against Hemp
Nazareth (U.R) Israel's
police are campaigning against
the growing of hemp plants to
be used for supplying drugs to
addicts. In some homes they
have found the plants growing
in kitchens from which part of
the floor has been removed.
The police have a standing
order of 15 per cent of the value
of the hemp being grown to
persons informing them of such
a practice. Nevertheless, the
number of addicts is on the
increase, .chiefly among immi
grants from Moslem countries.
Since drug addiction is a rel
atively recent phenomenon in
Israel, a new word had to be
coined to describe it. Scholars
of the Hebrew language and
the Bible familiar with the word
"mitmakker"' meaning "devo
tee," are surprised to learn that
in recent months it has taken on
the additional meaning of "ad'
diet."
The chief centers for the nar
cotics trade in Israel are Nazar
eth and Beersheba.
In Nazareth police make . oc
casional raids on a narrow
street in the old part of the
city. If a raid has' been planned
well, they may capture a big
distributor carrying small lumps
of yellowsh brown hasheesh in
concealed pockets
Hasheesh, a product of hemp,
is Jcnown in America as mari
huana. Because of its low price
in comparison with other nar
cotics, it is the most widely
used drug by addicts.
Few Facilities
Recently, heroin has become
popular, according to police rec
ords.
Israel consumes 150 kilograms
of hasheesh a month. This, com
pared with the two tons daily
consumed in Egypt, seems hard
ly worth the bother given to it,
Nevertheless in comparison with
the country's population, it con
stitutes a serious health prob
lem.
The army, too, is seriously
concerned with weeding out ad
diets in its ranks, and recruits
from countries condoning the
use of narcotics are put under
special observation. Army field
security suspects a recently

narcotics smugglers. Beersheba
is the center for smugglers east
ward to Hebron, Amman and
Es-Salt in Jordan and westward
to Egypt.
Desert Bedouins are notorious
"protectors" of drug smugglers.

routes followed by smugglers
and either rob the caravans or
exact a tribute for protection.

received the note. The man hung
up when she asked, "what note?"
The note was found in the
store mail drawer. It demanded
$75 be left in an envelope under
the store door. It was signed "a
friend."

Couple Detained
In Klamath Beating
Klamath Falls U.!) Sheriff
Murray Britton said today two
persons were being held in con
nection with the beating and
robbery of Roscoe Watah, 90,
one of the oldest living mem
bers of the Klamath Indian
tribe.
Watah, who lives alone, was'
beaten 11 days ago at his ranch
house on the Piute road four
miles north of Beatty. He was
unable to leave the house and
summon help for two days.
Britton identified those being
held are Perry Chockloot, 23,
and his 19-year-old wife, Julia.

Walker, in a "million to one
chance," yesterday recovered a
valuable diamond ring which
she had accidentally flushed
down a toilet of her home more
than a week ago.,
The ring was recovered by a
city public works crew, which
pulled a steel brush on a line
through a two-block length of
sewer. The second sweep was
successful. .
Mrs. Walker said she had acci
dentally wrapped her 29-year-old
engagement ring in a piece
of kleenex and, without think
ing, tossed the kleenex into the
bowl and flushed it away.
