Sampietrini Constitute
Select Group of Workers
Rome (U.R) The Sampietri
ni men of St. Peter's consti
tute one of the world's most se
lect group of workers. They are
the repairers, restorers and cus
todians of the basilica of Rome
The Sampietrini number about
70 men expert workers in mo
saic, glass, carpentry, stone-cut
ting and related arts and crafts.
They must of course, be de
vout Catholics of absolute trust
worthiness. They also are care
fully chosen with an eye to good
manners, since they also act as
guides for, the visitors to the
basilica.
The Sampietrini have existed
as a functioning group since
1450, when Pope Nicholas V be
gan demolition of the old Con-
stantine basilica of Pt. Peter's
and laid down the plans for a
new structure.
Vork Intermittent
Work on the project was in
termittent. It was-not until 1506
that the foundation stone of
what is the present basilica was
laid by the great architect, Bra-
mante.
Bramante was followed by
other masters of Italian art
Raphael and Michelangelo
among them and for more than
a century the Sampietrini work
ed under the direct supervision
of the mighty Renaissance archi
tects. The basilica was far enough
along for the consecration to
take place in 1626. Still, a
modern observer might have
difficulty recognizing the pres
ent St. Peter's from what there
was oi li men, i
The two embracing arms of
the Bermini colonnades came
years later, as did the two foun
tains and the obelisk in the
square, the clocks of either side
of the facade, the sacristy and
the countless oiner details in
side and out.
The continued building and
upkeep of the basilica was the
function of the' Sampietrini.- The
artistic geniuses conceived their
masterpiece in stone and bronze
and iron, but it was the Sam
pietrini who executed the de
signs and turned them into
reality. -
An almost unknown but au
thentic genius, Niccola Zabaglia,
came from the ranks of the Sam

Technique Needed
To Ride Madrid
Transport System
Madrid OJ.R) Riding the
Madrid public transport to work
these days is getting to be a job
for a cross between a hermit,
a sardine, and a hefty football
player.
The hermit, because patience
is needed waiting for the trans
port to arrive.
A sardine, because, once the
doors of bus tram or train are
opened, it is a case of one
aboard, all aboard until the
coach is at bursting point.
A football player, because,
trains excepted, most Madrid
transport is based on the two
door principle one door to
come in by and one to go out
by. To reach the exit when
there are 100 tightly wedged
passengers ahead needs more
than ballroom dancing tech
nique. The municipality admits it
needs urgently 50 more trams,
150 more trolley buses, and 100
auto buses. It also says that the
very efficient subway system
needs to be rapidly expanded.
The municipality estimates it
would cost $16,000,000 to buy
the new equipment, not to men
tion the projected extension of
the underground network. But
where to get the funds?
Lale for Dinner,
Root of the trouble is three
fold lack of foreign exchange
to "import adequate transport
from abroad, inability of Span
ish manufacturers to keep pace
with demand and the tremen
dous growth of Madrid.
In 1947 Madrid had an esti
mated population of 1,500,000.
Today there are 2,000,000 per
sons living here, and more keep
pouring in, mainly from the
provinces in search of better-
paying jobs in the city. New
housing districts are springing
up on the outskirts of the town,
throwing a big strain on the
transport system, which must
get its passengers to and from
work twice daily.
The long midday break here
means that most workers travel
home for lunch, return to their
offices or factories in the after
noon and return home agam
in the evening.
The problem is not so acute
in the evening. Spanish men
consider the time between ceas
ing work at 7 or 7:30 p.m. and
getting home for the evening
meal at 9:30 or 10 as "the man's
hours." Not for them the rush
home to help put the kids to
bed. It's a glass of wine, a chat,
and of course that wonderful
excuse:
"You know, my dear, how the
transport is."
Although he could neither
read nor write, he designed and
built hoists, cranes, lifts, bridges,
superstructures and platforms
perfectly adapted for the par
ticular work of maintaining the
fabric of St. Peter's basilica.
Based on Models
Zabaglia died in 1750, after
heading Sampietrini for more
than 50 years. The equipment
used by the present-day Sam
pietrini is based on his models,
which have never been sur
passed. With their special equipment,
the Sampietrini are ready for
almost any sort of work, from
fixing a loose cornice, 200 feet
above the floor of the basilica
to restoring a precious mosaic.
The mere size of the basilica
makes its upkeep an exacting
task. St. Peter's is 632 feet
leng (compared to the 332 feet of
St. Patrick's cathedral in New
York, or the 361 feet of London's
Westminster Abbey.
The floor space of St. Peter's
covers nearly 10 acres, and the
distance from the cross above
the dome to the floor of the
church is 444 feet. The structure
has 290 windows, 597 pillars,
44 alters, 131 mosaics and 435
statues, and there is room with
in for 100,000 persons.
The "mission" variety of
olive, first established by the
Spanish at Mission San Diego,
is widely grown in California.
Andrew Jackson was born in

Waxhaw, South Carolina.
