Crosbv. crooner turned dramat
ic actor, said today he's hoofing
his last and
has closed the
door on movie
musicals.
Crosby is
back in his
familiar sur
roundings, dancing in a
straw hat with
Donald O'Con

Gayr.or and the sexiest pair of
le?s in town, Jeanmarie's, in
"Anything Goes."
After saunterine throueh
number with traditional ease,
Bing sat down in his dressing
room to casually observe h?'
through with big film musicals.
"Anything Goes" will be his
fans' last chance to see him
croon in wide-screen color with
hundreds of wiggling chorines
behind him.
Wants Comedy
well; if someone came ira
with a gre? musical mavbe I'd
do it, but as far as I know this
is the last," he said.
I d like to do a good roman
tic comedy, like 'It HaDDenad
One Night.' Or stories with kids,
something like little league base
ball. 1 feel I've' done all I can
with musicals. I'll never be a
dancer, not at my age. ' -
This picture, for example,
has 11 or 12 numbers,' at 4V6
rninates apiece. That's 45 min
utes of mujic and does'nt leave
lime for much of a story, not
much chance to develop any
comedy."
Bing doesn't mean he'll never
sing again on the screen. He
still likes "stories with two or
three songs." He sang even in
the heavy drama that won him
rn , Oscar nomination, "The
Country Girl."
Snaring that honcr plus pub
lic acclaim for his tragic part
admittedly influenced Bing's de
cision to get away from big
musicals. In fact, he still talks
happiiy about "The Country
Girl."
"someone Just sent me a re
view of 'The Country Girl from
Canada," he said. "The critic
said he thought the picture
ihould have won the Academy
Award. He said he thought they
should re-count the votes.
"Oh, I still get a lot of let
ters about the Academy awards,"
the ioser said with a grin.
The man who is the only full
fledged institution in Hollywood
appears thinner since his recent
operation. The lines around his
blue eyes are beginning to show,
but with age the millionaire
singer has mellowed. He affably
talk; to the press these day
and seems happy and friendly.
"Musicals are tiring and
straight pictures are easier," he
said. "I never did any acting In
'The Country Girl. I just did
wh:.t the -director told me.
"Another thing, in. other pic
tures you don't have to wear
any makeup. I never did like
make-up. It itches and gets hot."
