perience of a friend who recent-
ly came across five $1 Treasury
Savings Stamps. He had bougnt
them as a youngster back in the
winter of 1921, just a few weeks
after they had been issued.
"As a kid in short pants wh'le
we were in World War I," he
said, "I had got the habit of buy-
ing thrift stamps.
"I thought, of course, that I
had long since cashed all such
things in, but in going through
my late father's safe deposit
box recently, I came across these repeating itself.

It was a good-looking vase but
not one that I would have got
ten excited about.
However, when my niece
Judith opened the bidding at $5
and continued briskly until she
got it at $35, my curiosity was
quite aroused.
"It's Lotus ware," she ex
plained, "and the only reason I
got it at his price is because .he
rest of the people here don't
know its value."
Close up, I had to revise my
opinion of the piece. It was beau
tiful. Nine inches high, of grace
ful, classic shape, its entire ex
terior was covered with en un
derglaze of rich mazarine blue.
On one side, in white Limoges
enamel, over the glaze, was a
Cupid chasing a butterfly. It was
done with such charm that I
couldn't help wondering wheth
thc little fellow had the same
success as he does when using
his bow and arrows on human
beings. Bemused, I turned the
vase around and there was
the answer. Cupid, apparently,

ing to the bottom where I saw,
printed in black, a crescent and
star enclosed by the nam- of the
East Liverpool, O., manufactur
er Knowles, Taylor and
Knowles. Above the circle was
a lotus flower, below was the
name "Lotus ware."
"They began to make this in
the late 1880s," my niece con
tinued, "and a piece like this
is certainly worth $175 at least."
