Berlin (U.R) Neckties and
evening gowns are coming back
in the Soviet zone of Germany.
The ties may be gtiiped or
plain, loud or conservative, but
they are becoming a must for
the German man, particularly
at parties or restaurants.
Evening gowns now have the
Communists' blessing, too, so
long as they do not reveal too
much of the bust. But cocktail
dresses still are frowned upon.
Girls who wear dresses em
phasizing the bust are accused
of trying to look like "American
pin-up girls." And in the West,
the Communists charge, girls
don cocktail dresses just to get
men to buy drinks for them.
The return of ties and eve
ning gowns is part of a Oovern
ment campaign to convince East
Germans that Communism and
fashion go together.
For a long time East German
Communists neglected their ap
pearance and their manners.
The idea seemed to be to dress
as baaly as possible and as much
like everyone else as possible.
Ties, even in the evening,
were worn by men infrequently,

an air base in Florida to be

Les Graffis has been released
from the Washoe Medical Center
at Reno but is still in a cast from
his waist up. His wife, Edith,
was unable to leave the hospital
at this time, but expects to be
released in about two weeks.
They were injured near Susan
ville while on a vacation trip.

A famous nutritionist says
that women are killing their hus
bands with culinary kindness.
Almost every woman takes
pride in setting an abundant
table and seeing her husband
take second helpings. But Dr.
Frederick J. Stare says that a
woman runs less chance of being
widowed if her pride suffers
while hubby's waistline stays
slim.
Stare, 44, chairman, depart
ment of nutrition. Harvard
School of Public Health, said
that contrary to popular belief
this Is not the healthiest nation
in the world particularly for
men past 40.
Wives Outlive 'em
Statistically, he said. In an in
terview during a recent food
conference, the American male
at 45 can look forward to fewer
birthdays than his counterpart
in. several European countries
Norway, Denmark and Italy, to
name three.
The Harvard nutritionist said
that two of every three deaths of
men past 40 are caused by heart
or circulatory disease.
"Overweight is one reason
why." he said. "In a way, our
women are making widows of
themselves . . . just by over
feeding their men."
The nutritionist said that a
man of 50 in' good health and of
average weight has a good
chance of living to nearly 70, the
present life expectancy average
of the male population.
"But if in the next' year or
two," he said, "he adds 25
oounds, he has cut five years
off his life."
Woman's life span is longer,
ard strangely enough, Stare
said, excess weight isn't as dam
aging to a woman's health in the
40's as it is to a man's.
"Her obesity catches up with
her later," Stare said, "although
medical science doesn't know
why.
How To Keep Husband
What can a woman do to keep
from being widowed?
"First, she will have to curb

One way to keep huoby from
gaining weight is -to make the
servings smaller.
"And curb the urge to Insist ;

"When hubby says 'no, thank
you,' don't insist."
