    Surplus Military
Stockpiles Offer
Variety of Goods
Washington (U,P.) If you
have need for an airplane fuse
lage or two, several miles of
railroad track or an assortment
of bags, barrels, baskets, or egg
crates, you should notify your
Uncle Sam.
Chances are he can find them
for you among his stocks of mili
tary surplus.
These stocks, ' which become
surplus as a result of wear and
tear and changing military needs
are made available to the public
by the armed services through
property disposal offices located
at various military installations
in 25 states, the District of Col
umbia and overseas.
The Department of Defense
continuously reviews its scat
tered assets to assure that only
property needed now or in the
foreseeable future is kept on
hand. Surpluses are catalogued
by the disposal offices and in
formation as to their nature is
forwarded to prospective civil
ian buyers. This property may
be available through the various
disposal offices.
f Military surplus is classified
usable and salvage or scrap
and waste. A buyer, however,
may consider these stocks dif
ferently than the armed services.
Many usuable items are to be
found in both classifications, and
those in the first are graded ac
cording to a condition code.
A prospective buyer who is
listed with the disposal offices
is informed of the types and
condition of surpluses to be
made available in advance of
sale in his area. He also is noti
fied of the time and place of
sale and invited to submit a bid
for the materials he may want,
if bidding is to be the procedure
used for disposal. In any case,
whether disposal is to be under
taken through bidding, auction
or retail sale, he is mailed a
descriptive catalogue giving him
full information on the sale.
A person wishing to get on
property disposal bidders' lists
simply writes to a military dis
posal office in his geographical
area, giving his name and ad
dress and listing the types of
surplus he would like to buy. A
list of the location of all disposal
offices may be obtained from
any armed services installation
or by writing to the Department
of Defense, Washington, D. C.

Father Pawned Suit;
Son Tries Suicide
Indianapolis (U.R) A 14-year-old
boy said today that he
tried to kill himself because his
father took the boy's Easter
suit, which he bought with
money saved from delivering
newspapers, and pawned it to
buy liquor.
The boy became ill at school
Tuesday. He was given emer
gency treatment at a hospital
and told authorities he took two
overdoses of sleeping pills. At
first, the boy said, he had plan
ned to drown himself in a creek
but rejected the idea.
He said he bought the new
suit with money saved from de
livering newspapers. He wore it
Easter Sunday. Then, he said,
his father pawned it.
"I felt so bad, I wanted to
die," the boy said.

Stevenson Accused of
Appeasement Sermon
Taipeh, Formosa (U.R) Chi-
ese Nationalist officials today
privately accused Adlai E.
Stevenson of preaching "ap
peasement" in his speech Mon
day night in Chicago.
All officials questioned on
Stevenson's proposal in the For
mosa situation said they were
disappointed. But none of them
wculd permit use of his name.

that tends to compromise with
the Communists is appeasement
and you cannot get far with
the Communists by appeasing
them."
Atomic Explosion
Again Postponed
Las Vegas (U.R) The At
omic Energy commission today
postponed for the fourth time
a 400-foot tower nuclear blast
set for tomorrow on French
man's Flat.
The AEC said unfavorable
weather conditions caused the
postponement. The detonation
originally was scheduled as the
second part of a two-shot ex
periment last Saturday.
Another weather evaluation
was planned for tomorrow to
determine if a firing will be
possible Friday.
More Bad Weather
Slated in Oregon
By UNITED PRESS
A storm that raked Oregon's
coast with winds of more than
60 miles an hour and dumped up
to an inch and a half of rain
quieted down today but the
weather man said more bad
weather was in the making.
The storm hampered shipping
at the mouth of the Columbia
river where gusts of wind up to
63 mph were reported. At New
port a 205-foot tower of radio
station KNPT blew down and a
supper club's window was
smashed and part of the roof
blown away.
Rainfall totaled 1.5 inches at
Newport and Salem during the
24-hour period ending at 4:30
a.m. today. North Bend had 1.44,
Brookings 1.36 and Portland .96.
Small craft warnings were up
from Newport north today for
winds up to 30 mph with strong
er gusts expected tonight. A
storm lurking off the coast might
bring more bad weather this
weekend, the weather man said.
