Enrico Caruso's Double
Teaches Speech-Handicap

who once was acclaimed through
out the world as the great Enri
co Caruso's double lives out his
declining years here teaching
the otherwise speech - handi
capped to speak.
Music-lovers and critics often
referred to Charles Morati as
"the second Caruso." They, had
good reason to do so. Morati, now
78 and retired from the opera
stage since 1923, not only looked
like the master's twin brother
but also possessed a rich tenor
voice.
The Buffalo studios of the
French-born voice and speech
specialist contain a priceless col
lection of portraits, souvenir pro
grams and records of the days
when both he and Caruso were
active in opera
Morati sang at the Paris Opera
Comique, the Brussels Royal Op
era, the Geneva and Munich Op
era houses and Covent Garden,
yet he still feels humble and
embarrassed when called -"Ca
ruso's double."
"I felt like apologizing when
I first met Caruso, but apparent
ly he was flattered that some
body . else possessed his good
looks," Morati said with a
chuckle.
Card Games
This fateful meeting occurred
in New York City when both
singers were singing the same
roles of Faust and Don Jose for
competing companies.
"We used to meet right after
our performances in one or the
other's hotel room for a game of
cards," Morati said' "Caruso kept
calling me brother and used to
win most of the games."
Morati said they talked about
everything but opera
"He was a wonderful man but
funny in his way," he continued.
"He never wanted to discuss his
voice or his performance."
Morati continued his singing
career two years after Caruso
died in 1921. In the late 1920's,
he came to Buffalo, married and
settled here as a vocal teacher.
"I have always been interested
in the production of voice be
cause the human voice is the
source of the most thsilling con
quests," Morati explained.
Several Techniques
To help the handicapped, Mor
ati uses several techniques, such
as exercising the soft palate and
using the sinuses and the phar
ynx to replace the loss of the
vocal cords.
Every week, old friends and
music lovers gather in his studio
to piay records and look over
old scrap books.
"Even on wax my friends con
fuse me with Caruso," he said
with a sigh.
According to Aunt Polly, the
president of the American
Dental Assn. says a person is
just as well off
brushing his
teeth with
water as with
any toothpaste
or powder. As
far as he knows
there Is no ade
quate evidence
that any den
trifrice is use
ful in prevent
ing decav "ex
cept as it assists the toothbrush
in cleaning the teeth." The presi
dent, Dr. Daniel F. Lynch, of
Washington, D.C., added that
ine American Dental Associa
tion will stand back of that."
Maybe that was so when Dr.
Lynch said it, but will the asso
ciation stand back of it now that
I have elbowed my way into the
discussion? If it is possible, my
views and teachings concerning
hygiene and health are almost
as unpopular with the A D A as
they are with the A M A.
"It's about time," I thought,
when Aunt Pollv bezan
story but my elation was
nientary. The toothbrush , it
seems, is still de rigueur in Yan-keeland.
But, dentistry, like medicine
is making strides nowadays.
Half a century ago a crack at
glorified soap such as Dr.
Lynch's would have . . .
As any dentist can tell you, a
plodding practitioner of medi
cine is not qualified to have an
opinion or give advice concern
ing the preservation of the teeth.
As I tell you, no dentist has as
yet explained why or how brush
ing teeth, with jor without some
magic nostrum flavored with
soapy lemon or wintergreen, pre
vents decay.
It would be as sensible to
brush one's tonsils before or
after each meal as it is to brush
one's teeth in my opinion.
I have nothing against soarj
and water cleanliness. Believe
it or not I sometimes rinse my
mouth with soapy water after
eating. But when I'm too busy
to mess with such mouth wash
ing, or when the kind of soap
I prefer is not available, I don't
rnind neglecting my teeth, if it
is neglect.
If you can refrain "from com
ments on filthiness I'll tell you
why I feel so comfortable about
not brushing my teeth. I say
"my" teeth, meaning, of cour?e.
the teeth I grew myself and the
teeth my dentist made and in
stalled, making in all 28 func
tionally efficient teeth. For you
see I have seen for myself the
teeth ' of the people of Tristan
dc Cunha the finest teeth in
the civilized world. At least
they were the finest up to 1949.
Prior to '49 the people there had
no use for tooth brushes or den
trifrices, for they had no dental
caries. But about that time the
refinements of ultra-civilization
were introduced -the residents
even boasted they could get
white sugar, white flour, candy
etc. at the store lately opened !

pany that had established a can
nery on the island to market the
crayfish that abound in the
waters there. This refinement in
diet probably marks the end of
a great lesson in nutrition dental
hygiene and health.
