Father, 65, Insists
On Doing Heavy Work
Few people are willing to ad
mit that they are able to do less
than they once could.
(Q) "My father, who is nearly
65. came to live with us last
-winter, after my mother died.
"T"S"T3 He is retired
and has a
small pension
so that he is
able to do most
of the things
he wants to.
He also has
some money
he saved and
will have a

tirement fund from an old age
policy when he reaches 65. He
pays me for his board and lodg
ings, and this helps, as we have
no more than we need.
"My problem is that my fa
ther insists upon doing all kinds
of things that I feel he shouldn't
do. For example, every time we
had a snowstorm this winter he
insisted upon shoveling snow.
I tell him he is too old to do such
heavy work but he insists that
he is in fine health and never
has anything wrong with him. I
am so afraid he will have a
stroke or something like that if
he isn't more careful, but I sim
ply can't make him see how
foolish it is to take such a
chance. What would you ad
vise?" (A) First and foremost, stop
pointing out to your father that
he is getting too old to do the
things he has been accustomed
tc do. It hurts his pride to have
jou or anyone else remind him
of his age.
He will do the very things you
are trying to keep him from
doing just to prove that he is
not "old."
Of course a man of his age
should not be doing such heavy
work. Even if he is in the best

of health, it is a big risk and one
not worth taking.
Undoubtedly he does not want
to feel that he is making extra
work for you, even though he is
paying you well. But there are
many things he could do that
would not impair his health and
yet be very useful to you.
Why not ask him to do some
errands that would give him a
chance to walk in the open and
to see people? Or, he could help
with some of the lighter work
in the home, such as preparing
vegetables or doing some of the
cooking, if he likes to cook.

Trollope never made it. He
shoved off at 67. Osier did a
little better; he conked out at a
respectable 70.
Old-timers may remember
that the conductor of this peren
nial column advocated compul
sory retirement from work, pro
fession, or business at 64. Look
ing back, I think now that if my
plan had been accepted volun
tary retirement at 60, compul
sory retirement at 64, with a
pension computed at half the in
dividual's annual income or earn
ings since the age of 40 I could
have done a lot more bowling in
recent years.
Perhaps my opinion about the
time to retire was biased by
what I found when I examined
the candidates for the presiden
cy in the course of the 1920 cam
paign. On the one hand the Gov
ernor, who cheerfully went
through every test I wished to
make, said I might write
what I pleased about his condi
tion. But maybe he knew he was
in excellent health. On the other
hand the Senator wouldn't sub
mit to any kind of examination
unless and until I gave him my
word not to reveal to the public
what I might find ... I kept my
word. Privately I predicted that
if elected he would not live out
his term.
Ever since I have pondered
the question: Why do we entrust
the fate of our country to a man
or men whose capacity to bear
the burden we do not know or
care to know? Think of this
when you think of Teapot Dome
and Yalta.
In the armed services officers
must pass a physical examina
tion to qualify for promotion or
even to remain on active duty.
But nobody cares whether the
Commander-in-Chief is capable
of doing his job, just so long as
the politcians like him. In Yan
keeland, we are inspired by pa
triotism July 4, Feb. 22, Nov. 11
and maybe other days in differ
ent sections of the country, but
the rest of the time we serve
party politics.
As Osier observed in "the doc
tor's bible," a man of 28 or 29
may have the arteries of a man
of sixty, and a man of forty may
present vessels as much degen
erated (physical degeneration,
cardiovascular degeneration, C
V D, arteriosclerosis, hardening
of the arteries) as they should be
at eighty.
So a person's chronological
age is not important. What we
should know is whether the indi-

City residents may have their
homes inspected for fire hazards
simply by requesting the city
fire department for such inspec
tion, Fire Marshal Truman Nel
son informed the Medford Pro
fessional Insurance Agents asso
ciation at a noon luncheon last
week.
He stressed that persons who
think they have hazards in their
homes or who feel that they
