Unusual Glass Ash Tray
Made in Form of Top Hat
I was on the point of asking
about the glass top hat on the
table beside Charles when he
reacheei forward and ground out
a cigarette in it.
"That's quite an unusual ash
tray." I remarked.
"It isn't an ash tray any more"
announced his wife, Charlotte,
sweeping forward from the door-
way to pick it up.
"And why not," asked Charles
making an unsuccessful grab for
the piece. "Are you an Indian
giver?"
"It's still your birthday gift, if
vou insist." Charlotte said. "But
you mustn't use it as an ash tray,
It's too valuable."
She emptied the ashes into the
fireplace, wiped out the inside
of the glass hat, which measured
a good six inches across the brim
and set it down on the table. The
early afternoon sunshine made
it gleam as if it had been touched

BUYER'S THEORY ON FIRST EDITIONS PROVED SOUND
"There goes a man I hate to that my prices on the three were

nodding toward a fellow disap
pearing through the door.
Inasmuch as the cash register
showed $34 for the small pack
age of books the customer was
carrying under his arm, l na-

of George's attitude.
"It isn't the money he spends1'
said George somewhat heatedly.

with magic. For a moment I had
the illusion that it has been cut
out of solid emerald.
"I showed this to Marie this
morning." Charlotte said. "She's
been collecting American glass
for years, and right away, she
identified it as a piece from the
Congressville factory at Sara-
toga Springs, N.Y., probably
from the 1885-'95 period.
I asked how she knew since
the piece wasn't signed.
"Because of the bright, deep,
emerald green color and the fact
that it looks like pieces she had
seen that have been handed
down in the families of men who
worked in the factory," replied
Charlotte.
"Furthermore," she added as
an afterthought, but a clincher
at that, "Marie wouldn't have of-
lered me $z5 for it, wnicn sne
did, unless she could sell it for
at least twice as much.

times," he said. And with a quick
motion he whipped out a pocket-
book opened K and extracted a
one dollar bill which he handed
to me,
"Got that today," he said.
"It's a silver certificate with a
blue seal, just to the right, of
Washington's picture and the
somewhat higher than the aver
age of the auction figures."
"But why did you sell? After
all, you didn't have to, and I
can remember the day when you
would probably have told him to
SCram,
I said.
"No;
George replied. "I could
have kept the books for another
couple of years. But I didn'
want to?"
"Why is he buying Longfel
low," I asked.
George looked somewhat
pained. "I don't like to admit
if," he said, "but he has the very
sensible idea that dislike of
Longfellow is a fad, that his
books will inevitably rise in
value and that consequently the
time to buy is now.
"And since his theory proved
true a couple of years ago on
Anthony Trollope and a couple
of others, it undoubtedly will on
Longfellow, too.

Around Hollywood
Hollywood (U.R) Emrnys
and Oscars notwithstanding, the
popularity award in Hollywood
according t o
the postman's
mail bag today
goes to televis-
ion stars
George Gobel
and Jack
Webb.
This infor
mation was
spirited out of
Aline Mosby Holly wood's
only fan mail answering service,
headed by an ex-actress named
Claire Rochelle.
She takes care of the fan mail
of nearly every big movie star
from Elizabeth Taylor to Lana
Turner and recently she took
over many TV stars and pro
grams, too.
She can judge the ups and
downs of the stars from the size
of the mail sacks that come to
her office. Currently the post
man rings the most for pixie
comedian Gobel and Webb, the
hero of "Dragnet". The two
Hollywood programs that draw
the most letters are "Private
Secretary" and "My Little
Margie."
TV Pulls Fan Mail
"I remember a few years ago
a TV executive said he didn't
think TV would pull fan mail be
cause people see the stars so
often in their living rooms," said
Miss Rochelle.
"But TV pulls as much and in
some cases more than movie
stars. The mail Webb and Gobel
get is phenomenal."
It is one of the sad truths of
this magic city, but the letters
fans write to most stars wind up,
not at their mansions, but at
Miss Rochelle's unassuming of
fice. And the letter-openers are
not .the stars but Miss Rochelle
and her staff of 23 workers.
Requests for photos and rou
tine mail are handled on an as
sembly line. But Miss Rochelle
insists "any letter that requires
personal attention or an answer

Monthly Rundown
Each month a customer gets a
report of how many letters he
got, what percentage was favor
able and how many letters ask
the star to please disappear from
the TV screen.
"Gobel receives many jokes
that people hope he'll use," said
Miss Rochelle. "A lot of fans
send in story synopses and songs.
"Recently," she added, sifting
through stacks of letters, "Gobel
used a joke on his show: 'Send
in 25 cents and any old box
top'. Well, we're still getting
cartons of box tops. We sent the
money to the March of Dimes."
Miss Rochelle started her
unique business seven years ago
with a tiny office and one client,
Howard Duff. Now she has five
secretaries and more than 250
film and TV stars as customers.
"Fan mail is a good barometer
for TV," she said. "Once a show
was threatened with cancella
tion but when the sponsor saw
our mail report he signed for
another season."

Red China Jets Said
In Formosa Range
Taipeh, Formosa (U.R) Com
munist China has stationed at
least 40 Russian-built MIG-15
jet fighters at newly completed
Luchiao Airfield within striking
range of Matsu and Formosa,
Nationalist newspapers report.
An American military spokes
man would neither confirm nor
deny the report. Chinese official
sources said, "The Communists
have completed Luchiao and it
is highly possible they have sta
tioned planes there."
The presence of Communist
jets could herald a new crisis in
the Formosa Strait since it
would mark the first time they
nave had such planes within ef
fective flying range of Formosa.
High ranking Nationalist
authorities said earlier the Com
munists were "definitely" build
ing up their air potential op
posite Formosa. -It was predict
ed once the Communists massed
sufficient airpower a battle
would break out for air suprem
acy over the Formosa Straits.

back to the taxation committee
where the objections were re

active support of most county
