OSC Diamonders
Down Pioneers
Portland (U.R) Oregon
State downed Lewis and Clark
5-2 in a pre-season baseball game
yesterday although the Beavers
were ,outhit 7 to 6.
Four costly errors spelled de
feat for the Portland club. Third
baseman Jerry Bettendorf hit a
homer for OSC in the fourth
alter Johnny Fredericks had
walked.
Tiger Jones Only 8-5
Choice Over Johnson
St. Louis, Mo. (U.R) Ralph
Ralph (Tiger) Jones, who stunned
the boxing world by whipping
Ray Robinson on Jan. 19, was
rated only an 8-5 favorite to beat
George Johnson tonight in a nationally-televised
10-round mid
dleweight bout at St. Louis
Arena.
The rather close odds were in
terpreted by many boxing men
as a belief that the "Tiger's" win
over Sugar Ray was due, not so
much to his own prowess, but
to the former champ's poor condition.

Dean-Hussane Wrestling Bout Expected
To Pack 'em in at Merrick's Saturday
Wrestle fans are expected to
jam Merrick's arena tomorrow
night to see Man Mountain Dean
Jr., said to be the world's largest
grappler, when he faces Yoggi
Hussane in the main event of
Mack Lillard's weekly mat of
fering. The 30-year-old Dean,
who hails from Stone Mountain,
Ga., was taught the tricks of the
trade by his late uncle, the origi
nal Man Mountain Dean, and is
said to have improved on many
of the old boy's spectacular tactics.
Dean's pet maneuver is a fly
ing body press which he calls a
"belly flop." Opponents have
long sought to have officials bar
the dangerous maneuver but it
has been ruled strictly legiti
mate. He sets a foe up for the
"belly flop" by battering him to
the mat and while he is in a
dazed condition Dean leaps into
the air and hurls his 380 pounds
full force onto the unlucky one.
Besides being a top flight mat
ster, Dean is widely known for
his feats of strength. He is said
to delight in matching his

Burke Grabs Four Stroke
Bulge In Masters Tourney
Augusta, Ga. (U.R) Bruce
Cudd, who won the Oregon
Open golf title recently, had a
75 yesterday in the first round
of the Master's tournament here,
three over par. Cudd trailed the
leader, Jackie Burke, by eight
strokes.
By WILLIAM TUCKER
United Press Sports Writer
Augusta, Ga. (U.R) Curly
haired . Jackie Burke, whose
brand new putter yesterday
helped him fire the best opening
round seen here in 14 years,
carried a huge fourstroke lead
into the second round of the
famed Masters golf tournament.
And the other famou esntries
were mighty worried, because
32-year-old Jackie showed no
intentions of "blowing" nis sur
prising lead.
Burke stormed over the sunny
but windswept Augusta National
Course in a five-under-par 67
that included only 30 putts. It
was the lowest first day score
since Craig Wood's 66 in 1941.
Jackie Didn't Gamble
And it was a triumph of con
servatism. Never gambling even
once, the transplanted Texan
who now plays out of Kiamesha
Lake, N.Y., concentrated on
reaching the mammoth greens in
such a way as to leave himself
the best possible putting lie.

questionnaire.
TEAM HONORED
Members of Medford's sec

ON SICK LIST
Roelandt also reported that
Frank Rector, Medford's second
